Santa, if you want to be a Safin fan you just have to accept this things. It's a part of the job. We suffer and suffer, but when he wins we're in nirvana. Being his fan you also get the rewards which you'll never get with another player. Proudly read his interviews and say, or think: "and I'm his fan!" When he plays incredibly well (yes it's rare, yet still...) you get to enjoy all the praise he gets. And that praise if also unique. Plus, who can give you the biggest range of emotions during one given match: tell me a player whose fans get to cry, swear at the player in as many ways they can, laugh, jump with joy, you name the emotions, all in a single match? He's a roller-coaster, trully, although I'd rather use a stronger phrase as this one is used far to often for less intersting matches. I'm sure that everyone here thought "I already know this" while reading what you wrote, we have been there, we ourself experience and feel the same as you all the time. But we remain his loyal fans, probably having a stronger bond with him than a billion married couples on this planet. Trouble and bad times only bring people closer. oh yes Vass. i agree with everything you wrote.its great said. And thats why i will always be his fan... i never thought of changing it. I just tend to get very frustrated with his matches.... but it will go away also after some days after the match.

Hey guys, Marat is just hilarious!! Loved the story about the hippo although I think I remember hearing a story similar to that years ago. Well it really put a smile back on my face after the match. I really wished that they would show whole of press conferences on T.V and not just 5 second snippets cos I think it would be even funnier!!! I ave to say that he looked real good and although it's not v practical I loved the black shirt! But I hate it when matches end on a tie break cos anything can happen whether fair or unfair. He did play very well though and I hope Barry Cowan was right and he does reach his peak at the U.S Open, I think Barry said that earlier on in the year though too possibly Indian Wells. Ah well roll on Cincinnati!!!

I love your post Vass. I almost had tears in my eyes when I read that. That was so true. And I'm happy that you removed that pessimistic avatar!

What I`m tryting to say IS, its always the same story ... you have to admit. "He played some great shots, BUT he made too many errors, he played stupid at important points, he lost his focus here and then, he gave away the set/game/tiebreak..." ETC. There is no match where he can pull it together, once for all. And no sorry, we were always saying this after every match of this... and where are the better days? don`t see them coming. its always the same story and hell is frustrating. hey santa!!! some of the ppl here have been marat fans for YEARS. so... the only reason i can think of for us sticking around is that we know marat has it in him and even though he doesn't appear to seem like he has it in him, we know...and we anticipate that one day he will also realise that he has it in him and will show everyone he has it in him. and i know i'm not making any sense.\ and this post was made before i read your last post...so...i now think it sounds ridiculous and out of point...sigh. anyway, abt the artricle magda posted (thanks magda!) the JOURNALIST QUOTED WRONGLY!!!! IT'S PARROTS!!! NOT LEOPARDS!!!!!

You have truly depicted what it is like to be a fan of Marats! We all rejoice together when he plays a good match, but even more importantly, we support Marat (and each other) through the tough times!

Hi guys! I'm very, very new to posting here, but I've been visiting TGFR and the forums for quite a while now and here's where I get my news about Marat, since I never really get the chance to see him play in person. I think this site is very fan-freindly and down-to-earth, plus I think the discussions and gossip are quite funny and not offensive at all (I don't think Dasha'll get pissed when she sees this). I just saw a replay of the Kiefer match and I found myself reacting exactly as Vassily described it. I then came to reflect on my 6-year (Lord, it's already been 6 years! I started liking him when I still had teeth braces and now I'm a new working woman!) fanaticism for Marat and I believe the intensity of emotions that he provokes in me is the very essence of my devotion to him. No other athlete can make me feel like this so consistently, and for so long. At the end of the day it always makes me smile when I think about how he stirs my blood even if he isn't on the court -- and I'm not implying anything naughty here! ;D Anyway, after posting this I'll get to work on my profile, I just want to pop in first and say hello!
