02.11.05 Marat News Marat has today officially withdrawn from playing at the Shanghai Masters Cup BUT he will go there to do promotional work for the Masters Cup and Shanghai. So people in Shanghai will still see him and I am sure there will be chances for signing for people too. For Paris fans - Marat will be in Bercy this weekend as he will present the winner's trophy to the lucky winner. In the meantime he is continuing working on the knee rehabilitation and we will have a better idea after Shanghai as to his schedule leading up to the Australian Open. Well it was expected but at least the fans will be able to see him...Can't wait till the Bercy final to see him ;D Get well Maratik and see you on court next year ;D

26.12.05 Marat News Regrettably we have to announce that Marat has withdrawn from playing in the Russian Team at the Hopman Cup. His place will be taken by Teimuraz Gabashvili. Although Marat has been working hard in Valencia, he feels that it would be too soon to start at the Hopman Cup and feels he should spend more time getting ready for the defence of his title at the Australian Open.

From maratsafin.com. A letter to fans ;D
Hello to all my fans!
It is now near to the end of the year 2005 and although the year started very well and I won my 2nd Grand Slam title, the rest of the year has not been too good.
It is never easy when a tennis player has a long time away being injured and I have had lots of thoughts about the game and being sad about being injured and not healthy to play on the courts. I miss it of course because it is my job and I love it.
Now I am busy working hard in Valencia to get myself back to be fit again and to try to defend my title in Australia. After all these years, I know my tennis and I know what I have to do.
I promise I will try very hard and I want to thank all my fans for all their support. They have always been there for me and it is very important.
So I want to wish you all a very happy holidays and for both me and my fans - a good year in 2006.
Peace and health be with you all
Marat

04.01.06 Marat News Marat took only a 3 day break in Moscow for New Year and then returned to Valencia to continue practice. Peter has joined him and they are working together. He is now practising his tennis and feels good. It is already 4 weeks that he has been working on his fitness and it is coming along fine but it must be remembered that it is a long road back after such a long injury and Marat does not want to rush it. Because of the length of time he has been unable to actually do anything strenuous with his knee, he really lost a lot of muscle strength around the knee and it is vital that this is fully built up again before going back to playing matches. It is a time race to be ready in time for the Australian Open and Marat is trying everything in his power to be there. He has been in talks with both his main sponsors Head and Adidas and they are in agreement that Marat should not force the issue and should he feel just before the Australian Open that he is not ready, they will abide by his decision. The thing to remember is that he is going to very hot temperatures and also to 5 set matches so Marat and Peter have to be happy that the knee will hold and Marat can fully defend his title. He has been working with the new Head racquet and is happy with his progress. Marat knows he is in a time race and he is doing everything in his power to be there so do not stop believing - maybe the time has come to believe there are miracles!

Marat has today advised of his withdrawal from the Australian Open. Despite the knee allowing Marat to now practice extensively on court and he was feeling much better than before, a decision had to be made that he was just not ready to play Grand Slam tennis. As Marat said:" I am very sad that I cannot go to the Australian Open to defend my title as Champion. I have been working very hard and it is a lot better. In my heart I know I want to be at the Australian Open to try to play but I have had to listen to what Peter, my team and also myself are saying that it would not be right to go to a Grand Slam and put so much test on my knee right now. I am sorry to all my Australian fans but I will be back next year!"
Marat intends to keep working on his fitness and it is intended that he will make his return in Marseilles on the 13th February.
