Marat will not play the Thai Open this year. It seems no-one reads the news on the home page or the message I posted here on the forum. Marat is out for 5 weeks with treatment for his knee and his return will only be at the Japan Open from 3rd October. So although the Thailand Open Site has not taken him off their list - please understand this - he will not be coming to Bangkok this year. Please will everyone read the news on the home page and the messages posted here before they keep posting the same question. Thank You Webby[/glow]

from the official site ;D [glow=red,2,300]From www.bbc.co.uk/ Safin qualifies for Masters Cup September 14 2005 Australian Open champion Marat Safin has qualified for the Masters Cup in Shanghai, joining Roger Federer and French Open champion Rafael Nadal. Federer and Nadal are assured of their places in the season finale due to their rankings, so Safin qualifies as the only other 2005 Grand Slam winner. The top seven players in the Champions Race qualify, with one spot for a Grand Slam champion ranked in the top 20. Safin is currently eighth but is guaranteed to finish in the top 20 It will be Safin's fourth appearance in five years at the Tennis Masters Cup, which will be held at the spectacular new Qi Zhong Stadium in Shanghai from 13-20 November. Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi should be safe for three of the final five places, with Guillermo Coria leading Nikolay Davydenko and Gaston Gaudio in the chase for the last two. from maratsafin.com [glow=red,2,300]From www.bbc.co.uk/Safin's Davis Cup blow for Russia September 14 2005 Safin missed Russia's Davis Cup quarter-final win over France Marat Safin will miss Russia's Davis Cup semi-final against Croatia later this month because of injury. The Australian Open champion has been troubled by a knee ligament injury since his loss at Wimbledon and was also forced to miss the US Open. Dmitry Tursunov takes over from Safin and will team up with world number seven Nikolay Davydenko, 2002 Davis Cup hero Mikhail Youzhny and Igor Andreev. The semi-final will be played indoors in Split from 23-25 September. "Safin is still not fully recovered from his knee injury and it will be at least another month and a half before he can resume playing," said Russian tennis chief Shamil Tarpishchev. "Even with him on the team, we would have problems overcoming a formidable Croatian side on their home turf, but without him it makes our task twice as tough." [/glow]

[glow=red,2,300]18.09.05 Marat is progressing well with his treatment - still working early every day but it is too soon to say when he will be ready. With regards to the Japan Open - officially Marat has not withdrawn but as there is no guarantee that he will be able to play, it was felt that the tournament director should be allowed to negotiate for another player in case of Marat not being ready to play.So this is what his management team have told the director of the tournament. Should Marat be ready then he will play. Unfortunately with the injury it is not possible to give any definite answers at this time. He definitely is not playing the Thai Open and a press release was made this weekend about this. With regards to the Thai Airways advert, he will travel to Bangkok at some stage for a weekend to complete the advert/video. At this stage it is not anticipated that Marat will travel to Split to support the DC team but with Marat anything could change. [/glow]
[glow=blue,2,300]18.09.2005 On this day the Russian Federation Cup Team retained the Cup and Dinara Safina was part of the doubles team with Elena Dementieva that sealed the win and this was the report of the FedCup site: Marat Safin phoned his little sister Dinara after the match to congratulate her, an appropriate gesture on a day when the 15,000 priviledged to be inside Roland Garros saw that the Fed Cup for so long regarded as the little sister of the Davis Cup, has finally grown up[/glow]

02.10.05 There is good news and bad news - depending on how you look at it. The good news is the knee injury is progressing well - the bad news is that it has been decided that Marat will not play until the St. Petersburg Open followed by Bercy and then Shanghai Masters Cup. Ths will give him some practice before the end of the season to test out the knee and then he will start the new season of 2006 fully fit. At this stage it has not been confirmed which tournament he will start with in 2006 but it is anticipated he will start with a regular tournament rather than an exhibition match

16.10.05 Bad news I am sorry to say especially for the Russian fans. Marat has had to withdraw from the St. Petersburg Open as his knee is not yet ready. For the French fans in Paris - look out for Marat in your city as he will be there from Monday practising to see if he can get his knee fit in time for Bercy. It is a long hard battle and we must keep him in our thoughts.Marat did find time to watch sister Dinara at the Kremlin Cup this week and he was very proud of her getting to the semis in both singles and doubles.

from maratsafin.com:
20.10.05 Well as usual Marat has had a slight change of plan. He visted Tver on the 19th together with Peter Lundgren to discuss ways of helping to further tennis in the Tverskoy region. Although Marat is the tennis player who has made it, he also wants to ensure that there will be a new tennis generation to continue the good work for Russia. This he is doing by helping the federations in various regions to progress. Then although he is not playing in St. Petersburg, he is hoping to go there for an autograph session and at least be there for a short time for the local fans. After that he goes to Paris early next week as he has certain promotion items to do for Adidas and also to practice. Whatever happens Marat is determined to try and play as he needs to get back on court. More than anything he wants to go to Shanghai and participate in the year end Masters Cup. It means a lot to him.

From ms.com forum, I hope this stops all the rumours because this is unbearable. I have been in touch with Marat's team today and the information Webby posted has been confirmed. Shamil speaks from his $%@@ and has no right to make any announcements on Marat's behalf [glow=red,2,300]Author: Webmaster (webby) Date: 29-10-2005 15:00 It is amazing how every news wire has picked up something that Shamil Tarpischev has said and decided that it is true. No the Masters Cup hasn't put anything because as at this time they haven't been officially advised of any withdrawal. Seems everybody forgets the last time Shamil Tarpischev gave details about Marats knee injury and how long he would be out for, that Marat himself said later in an interview I don't know how Shamil can say that when I haven't spoken to him in 3 weeks and when we did speak we didn't even talk about my knee. As of this morning as far as I was told Marat was still going to Shanghai and then 3 hours later it was all over the wires that he had withdrawn as per Shamil Tarpischev. I am not saying that Marat will play as there are still too many reasons why he may not, BUT I will not post anything until I am given the official statement by his management which is when they have had the time to officially advise the tournament directors. That is the current story. And to those French fans who asked - Marat will still go to Paris this week to do the promotions for Adidas but he won't be staying in Bercy. I am not sure if he will actually go to Bercy or not. Any news and I will post it. webby[/glow]
