Finally got to see a match!!! Good win in straight sets! Spent my time jumping between the eurosport livestrean and the TV (with the sound off ) I got a bit worried after the baggel because when a set is so easy it has the danger of making you loose focus. Still he hang in there and kept it simple On the down side, he really needs to work on his first serve percentage - and a bit more net play would be good as well. Only 16 winners (to Gulbis' 28) is also something he could improve against Baghdatis. Yep, he almost didn't move to the net in the last 2 sets (which he had done with good results in the first set), and maybe that could have helped, especially in the third set when Gulbis came from a break down. (now I'm starting to sound like Mary ;D) Molodets Marat and Good Luck against Baggy!

Thanks for the piccies And here's the post match interview ;D ;D ;D Q. How did you assess your match today? Straight sets, but it looked a bit up and down. MARAT SAFIN: Well, it's a little bit tough to start the beginning of the season, especially when it's the first official match. It's not exhibition or something like that. So it's kind of difficult to play and be relaxed and play your best tennis. So, you know, the first set was okay, but then I got a little bit tight. The guy started to play well. I think for the first match, it was a great one. Q. Any parts of your game you've got to work on to progress further? MARAT SAFIN: Just play more matches and it's gonna come up. I'm playing well, moving well. Knee doesn't hurt. I don't have any injuries. I think if I keep up this way, it's gonna be a good year. Q. What does it take for you to be happy about your game? MARAT SAFIN: Well, it's good to know that you can move around the court without any pain and you can move pretty well and you can play good tennis without any doubts on yourself. So I think it's pretty good feeling. But also, you know, you need some confidence, build up the confidence, because I didn't play any great tennis lately. So for me to start the year this way, I think it's just to continue. Q. Going to need more confidence going into the harder part of the draw? MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, I think I will need a little bit more, just a little bit more matches. But it's going to come up this way anyway. Big players like Baghdatis, Hewitt in the future. But it's getting much better, for sure. Second match. I already played a tough one today. It's going to work out well. Q. I heard you have been doing snowboarding back in Europe. Did you find it fascinating? MARAT SAFIN: Yeah, I think it's pretty cool. Q. Are you any good at it? MARAT SAFIN: I'm improving and improving, yeah. Q. Not too many falls? MARAT SAFIN: No. I'm alive, so I think it was good. Q. What is your fear about the new surface? MARAT SAFIN: I don't fear anything. I think it's great. The balls are great. Actually nothing to complain about. Just maybe the color is too bright for me, but it's just my personal opinion. I think otherwise, the speed of the ball is good enough to play good rallies and it suits to all the kind of players. www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/interviews/2008-01-15/200801151200390488129.html

Phew. Saw 'bits' of the first 2 sets ... and then they hopped over to Venus' match. The programme is on hold at the moment as I had to come up and check the score to put me out of my misery. From what I saw in the first and second set, he was playing really, really well. Good net approaches to unsettle the opponent and being aggressive so ... why oh why Big Yin did you apparently stop doing this in the third? I'm tempted not to send on your bag of bird seed for that! Kiddin'. Well done, You stayed focused and were moving well. Your hard work has paid off. Brill. I'm off to the haridressers now to get my curls shorn. Will check the remainder of the programme to see if I get to see any of that last set. Cybercoach will pass on coaching tips tonight. Good win Big Yin.

Safin dominates in first round
Tuesday, 15 January, 2008 By Adele Holland
Marat Safin dominated his first round match today, defeating 19-year-old Ernests Gulbis in straight sets.
Gulbis who is playing in his first Australian Open showed promise against tennis veteran Safin today, taking the Russian to a tiebreaker in the last set.
The two players were a display of contrast today, the up-and-coming youngster in a fluorescent green shirt, versus Safin, a previous Australian Open Champion, in traditional white.
Both players were serving at enormous speeds, but Safin showed his Grand Slam experience, with only one double fault compared with six from Gulbis.
Gulbis adopted his opponents on-court temper, throwing his racquet at the ground and shaking his head each time his shot hit the net. The young Latvian had 43 unforced errors, compared with Safin's 27.
Safin will play Marcos Baghdatis in the second round.

Okay Big Yin, tactics. Every time I see Bagpuss playing, he gets cramp. Usually when he is out of rhythm and his opponent is starting to get the edge. Putting aside this strange coincidence, you're going to have to make him run. Dictate the points from the start - lots of heavy groundstrokes, make him run down the shots (don't forget to drink your milk - it'll stop you dehydrating). Ignore the chanting Cypriot fans in the stands - keep the heid, and stay focused. You've got millions more around the world shouting at the telly for you (and there'll be a lot of young ladies shouting from the stands for you - make their night). Keep that in mind. Ignore any taunts from the Bagpuss fans - I'm sure there will be lots from the stands. Block it out. Get back in to the habit of more net play. Serve wide and get in. He'll mix up his shots and will try to use his forehand as much as possible. Don't let him dictate the rallies above all. Just concentrate on making him run. You're stronger and fitter and will outlast him. The return of serve needs to be spot on for you -keep the ball in, heavy flat returns. There you go. Easy. I've got 2 packets of bird seed here for you. Go for it Big Yin. ;D
