Hi Myke,
Yeah, I'm late. I would not panic too much and if you honestly have no idea a secretarial course is a good start. No matter what you choose to do at the end of the year a secretarial course will equip you with skills everyone now needs. I not only write my own correspondence and reports, I type them as I am doing it. In the main Secretary's do not sit in typing pools any more, it's actually a viable career in it's own right. A good Personal Assistant is actually a pearl beyond price, especially if he or she speaks a couple of languages.
I did the last thing I expected I would do - civil engineering. I wanted to do vet science and did not get the marks (as hard to get into as medicine in Australia) and started a B App Sci in Medical Records Administration. Whatever possessed me to do that I have no idea, just a course I got into so I went instead of doing straight Science. I did the first year, refused to go back, bummed about doing odd jobs for a year then got a job as a trainee draftsman and loved it. I went to TAFE, which is Technical College, part time and worked full time. I now have my Diploma of Civil Engineering (Land and Engineering Survey Drafting) plus Certificates in computing, Geographic Information Systems, etc. I specialised in land law, survey and computerised mapping. I don't do a lot of design work any more.
Sometimes I do hate my job, everyone has moments like that, but mostly I like it and enjoy working. It does not pay as well as a Degree but I think I have a better time than a lot of engineers I know. I did not go into horses as much as I love working with them.
Whatever you choose to do, try and choose something you enjoy because you will be doing it for the next 40 years. I pulled out of my Degree because I was terrified of the prospect, and as I have also done the corporate records management role for my current workplace for 7 years (they have FINALLY employed someone to do it full time) I know it was a good move on my part even though my family were disappointed.
Jules.

Thanks for your story Jules! I can relate to what you said about dissapointed familymembers. Not my parent's, but my grandparents are dissapointed. The whole family already knows. At least I don't have to inform anyone anymore And you're right, it's a good study when you don't know anything else to do. Good that you're doing something you like too. Somehow everyone finds something they like, even though it might not be anything you would have even thought of. I just had my introduction. It was good. People were nice. I'm one of the older ones, but that's ok And I'm buying my studybooks from an old student, which means I get to pay 300 euro instead of 650. Quite nice as well! So I'm happy again and hopeful! ;D Thanks you guys for reacting to this thread with your tips, stories and good luck wishes ;D
