Right - that's why Tursunov is playing, who also stood on court yesterday... Marat played two days in a row, Mitya was better player in the doubles serving better, Marat's returns sucked so considering fast surface and Marat's more fatigue it was expected that Mitya will play today. Moreover it was kind of expected from the day one that each of them will play singles, with Mitya replacing Marat or Misha on the last day depending on situation. Tarpi has been saying lately that he can always rely on Marat to play one good match at DC.

Spain are through thanks to a Rafa win over Nole 6-4 6-4 6-1
I think had Marat put in the hours behind the scenes - he would be fit enough to play for 3 days as he has done many a time. I think he is even too fatigued to sit on the bench - not seen the big guy yet??
Looks like Mikhail Youzhny will be the man to save us in the fifth - surely Russia wont lose.
As for GB - nothing more to be expected - a one man team in Murray and shit bunch of other players.

Tursunov fights back to win Dmitry Tursunov has come back from two sets down to defeat Victor Hanescu and book Russia's place in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.
Russian captain Shamil Tarpischev again shuffled his pack by bringing in Tursunov in place of Marat Safin. The strategy looked as though it may backfire as Tursunov lost the first two sets to the Romanian but the Russian, who lost yesterday's doubles from two sets up, slowly fought back and eroded Hanescu's belief.
In a little under four hours the blond Russian wrapped up a 46 57 63 64 62 victory to see Russia into the quarterfinals, where it will be away to the winner of Sweden v Israel tie. Romania, after suffering its seventh consecutive first-round tie, will contest the World Group play-offs in September.

watching the scoreboard as all the first round ties wrap-up ... can't believe how incredibly tight the crowd-less Sweden-Israel tie has been, beginning to end (Israel up 2 sets to 1 in the deciding rubber) Completed Ties:Argentina 5-0 Netherlands Czech Republic 3-2 France Croatia 5-0 Chile Russia 4-1 Romania Germany 3-2 Austria Spain 4-1 Serbia Andy about to get underway against Stan to (hopefully) close out a USA win ;D ... to get to play Croatia ... away ... on (probably) clay. Goody. ... but Bob & Mike are now the winningest US DC Doubles Team in history and Andy has won 30 DC matches

So the Quarter Finals are: Czech v Argentina - Indoor hard curt again Croatia v USA - Fast Indoor court which may help A-Rod and Bryans Israel v Russia - Outdoor hard for sure Spain v Germany - Do i even have to say!
Great win for Dmitry - intereseting to hear him say that he was actually abit nervous during the match and here we all thought he just goes out there and smacks the ball as hard as he can LOL
Israel should be a relatively easy tie with the only problems i expect to hear about the tie is whether politics will be involved again. Sela is a good singles and Ram good doubles but Russia should win pretty easily!

Israel's Davis Cup team looks forward to Russia
JERUSALEM (AP)—Israel’s Davis Cup team gained an emotional victory over Sweden against a backdrop of anti-Israel protests, and hopes the momentum will carry over to its next match against Russia.
Officials in the Swedish city of Malmo didn’t allow spectators at the Israel-Sweden matches, saying they could not guarantee the Israelis’ security. Israel has faced protests worldwide since its offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which ended in mid-January.
On Saturday, scores of rock-throwing protesters intent on stopping the match clashed with police, who apprehended nearly 100 people and arrested 10 on preliminary charges of rioting and assault.
In a near-empty arena, Israel beat Sweden 3-2 to reach the Davis Cup quarterfinal for the first time since 1987. Harel Levy secured the win by defeating Andreas Vinciguerra 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 in the final match Sunday.
The triumph was front page news Monday in Israeli newspapers. The headline in Yediot Ahronot read, “They Defeated the Hatred.”
Oded Yaakov, a former captain of the Israeli Davis Cup team and Levy’s coach, said the hostile atmosphere only spurred the Israelis.
“The feeling that you are isolated, that everyone outside is protesting against you, definitely gave the team more motivation,” Yaakov said Monday. “I think it is natural. In that situation it makes you want to play harder for your country, for your flag.”
Israeli doubles player Andy Ram also credited the demonstrations outside the arena for pushing the team to victory.
“The protests and the expressions of hate only increased our motivation,” he told the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot.
Israel will face Russia in the quarterfinals at home in July. The Russians beat Romania 4-1.
Russia is “a team of a completely different caliber,” Yaakov said. “Anything is possible.”
Israel has only one player in the top 100—Dudi Sela, ranked No. 63.
Sela and Levy are expected to play against Russia, and Ram’s regular doubles partner, Jonathan Erlich, is likely to return from injury. The pair won last year’s Australian Open crown.
Israeli tennis players have been the focal point of international criticism of Israel in the aftermath of the Gaza offensive.
Last month, United Arab Emirates officials denied a visa to Israeli female player Shahar Peer for the Dubai Tennis Classic. A week later, facing international criticism, the UAE allowed Ram into Dubai to play in the men’s doubles event.
