www.news24.com/News24/Sport/More_Sport/0,,2-9-32_1708159,00.html 'Sexy' Safin plans fightback 20/05/2005 14:49 - (SA) Paris - Marat Safin has been voted as the sexiest man in tennis but it's success at the French Open he really craves as he desperately tries to pull his season out of a depressing tailspin. The former world number one's second career Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open in January has been the only highlight of what has become a wretched 2005 with the 25-year-old having failed to get beyond the third round of any event since. In fact, his success in the ACE magazine poll has provided a rare reason to smile for the Russian. "I am very happy that the magazine made me their No 1 Hot Man," said Safin. "But for now, it is important that I work hard on my game so they can also make me No.1 for my tennis." Sustained attackSafin is one of only two men to have beaten current world number one Roger Federer this year, but his win over the Swiss superstar in the semi-finals in Melbourne has not proved to be a launchpad for a sustained attack on the top spot. "My goal is the French Open," said Safin. "That's my goal for all of my career. I am trying to win it. I have always played well there but for some reason it just hasn't worked out. I was always missing something extra." In 2002, he made the semi-finals here and was a quarter-finalist in 2000. Last year, he made it to the fourth round, but his title push was always dogged by blood-red blisters he suffered on both hands. "I am going to prepare myself as much as I can for the tournament," he said. "I like the Paris atmosphere, the city, the people, the courts, all these things make it very special. It is the perfect tournament." He refutes suggestions that he has not pressed Federer for the top spot. "I'm not frustrated at all. I can be upset with myself for many other reasons than to challenge Federer. It's not my goal to challenge anybody. "I am trying to be as happy as I can, to try and play as well as I can and to be as consistent as I can. "If that helps me compete with him for the number one spot, then that's great. But if I am not able to do that, then I am also happy. Peter LundgrenHis coach Peter Lundgren, who oversaw Federer's Grand Slam breakthrough in 2003, has no doubts and believes there is a good reason for the Russian's slump. "After Australia, Marat was without doubt tired mentally," Lundgren told the French L'Equipe sports magazine. "Since we have been together, he has worked really hard and since last autumn he has given a lot on the courts. He won tournaments in Beijing, Madrid and Paris and was in the semi-finals of the Masters Cup in Houston. "He was the man to beat last winter. He was concentrated, he didn't show emotions and played well. "Now we need to find that spirit, it will be difficult. But I believe Marat will be ready for Roland Garros." from official site of the tournament:
Men’s draw: No luck of the draw for fancied Nadal
By Guillaume Baraise Friday, May 20, 2005
Today's draw at the Tenniseum was unkind to rising star Rafael Nadal. The young Spaniard faces a clash with fellow wunderkind Richard Gasquet as early as the third round. Top seed Roger Federer, in contrast, could have fared worse.
Fourth seed Nadal should have little trouble overcoming his first round opponent, Lars Burgsmuller, but will probably be rueing his luck come the third round. The Majorcan phenomenon is set to face his French alter ego, Richard Gasquet (30). That match between two extraordinarily talented 18-year-olds should be a sight to behold.
Should he overcome Gasquet, and then potentially Gaston Gaudio (5) in the quarters, Nadal will cross swords with Roger Federer in the semis. That is another fantastic encounter in the making, and the world number one looks well capable of reaching the last four this year. Federer's first-round opponent, Robin Soderling, is not a clay court specialist and should not stretch the Swiss.
Spain's Nicolas Almagro should put up more resistance in the second round and Fernando Gonzalez (25), David Nalbandian (10) and Carlos Moya (14) are other potential obstacles on Federer's path to the semis.
Dream draw for Coria
World number-two Andy Roddick has every chance of going further than ever before at Roland Garros. His first adversary, local boy Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, will enjoy his day in the sun, but Argentina's Jose Acasuso should be a more dangerous proposition in the second round. Andre Agassi (6) has a similar outlook, with Igor Andreev likely to provide stiff opposition in the second round.
Guillermo Coria (8) could hardly have dreamed up a better draw. With no clay court specialist in sight until the quarter-finals, the feisty Argentinian should enter the second week with plenty of gas left in the tank.
In theory at least, Marat Safin (3) will stand in Coria's way for a place in the last four. Quite whether the Australian Open champion will get that far is very much open to question. The Russian has been struggling for form on clay and faces former French Open champ Juan Carlos Ferrero (32) as early as the third round.
The 32-seed system generally spares the leading players too stern an examination in the first round, but Carlos Moya (14) - Alberto Martin, Tim Henman (7) - Potito Starace, and Guillermo Cañas (9) - Gaël Monfils all stand out as potential banana skin openers for the seeds. Three-time French Open winner Gustavo Kuerten will have no room for complacency either, against Spain's David Sanchez.
Should the first two rounds go according to seed, here are a few of the exciting matches we can look forward to in the third round:
Potential third round matches
Roger Federer-Fernando Gonzalez Dominik Hrbaty-Carlos Moya David Nalbandian-Mario Ancic Juan Ignacio Chela-Tim Henman Rafael Nadal-Richard Gasquet Sébastien Grosjean-Radek Stepanek Joachim Johasson-David Ferrer Jiri Novak-Gaston Gaudio Guillermo Coria-Mikhaïl Youzhny Tommy Haas-Nikolay Davydenko Tommy Robredo-Thomas Johansson Juan Carlos Ferrero-Marat Safin Andre Agassi-Nicolas Kiefer Feliciano Lopez-Guillermo Cañas<br>Ivan Ljubicic-Nicolas Massu Filippo Volandri-Andy Roddick

Apparently the doubles draw will be made on Tuesday evening... I`m guessing if Marat will play doubles.. Doesn`t seem to be possible, but if that happends, I`m wondering who could be his doubles partner...

Big thanks to you once again my dear lau Lovely pics of Dinara And the draw..............wow.... So it seems the 'experts' think JCF will take out Santoro........wonder what Santoro has to say about that. Personally I would prefer Marat to meet JCF rather than Santoro. But thats just me! And......Nadal and Gasquet in the third round, sure neither expected that!! That has to be a 5 setter fight. Henman plays Chela again............LOL and I am glad to see Malisse is off his suspension LOL. And yep Coria looks like he got a break The first week looks like it will be very exciting all around. Still have to see who all the qualies are. Does anyone know when the women's draw will be out? Serena is out...

Will post this on TGFR forum as well - I have no idea what the problem is with the Tournament Threads Forum and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it. It's obviously a technical error - no-one has deleted the threads, and the correct number of pages of threads is still visible, in which case, it is up to Proboards to fix it. This has happened before, albeit briefly, on Marat Safin forum - the threads re-appeared within the hour. We can only hope the missing tournament threads reappear within a day or two: if not, I will contact proboards and see if they can fix it.
