Didn't think I'd get back to this thread this year but I bought the latest issue of Tennis + magazine during DC this weekend and there was a large article there about RG. This journalist went to the tournament and wrote a kind of RG diary talking a little bit about some players, male and female. Here is the translation of the part about Marat. ;D There are some very good points here, I do not however agree with a general conclusion of the article. Those who watched Marat-Robredo match will share my opinion I think. But there are as many opinions as there are people, so.... Enjoy Tired MaratIn contrast to Guga Kuerten (the previous bit of the article was about Guga ) Marat Safin still has the time and the strength to win Roland Garros. "The only thing he doesn't have is the desire to do so", most cynical reporters would add. As banal as it may sound, but a common phrase "Safin on court plays against himself", is not that far from being true. After winning AO in spring on clay courts Safin didn't show much. However, he came to RG (and I witnessed that) in good shape. His knee was giving him some trouble but injuries like that for professionals of such high level as Marat are an inevitable evil. In addition to that Marat's knee didn't get in the way of him beating his utmost principle opponent on clay - the Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero. And it definitely shouldn't have been in the way of beating the other Spaniard - Tommy Robredo, whose class is lower than that of JCF. However, it's common knowledge that Marat never seeks an easy way out. This time he had an arguement with himself for the whole 5 sets, laid out all pros and cons but at the end of the day his inner judge reached a verdict in favour of the Spaniard, making a decision that Marat is not ready to win RG this year. Will he be ready next year? Unfortunately, when it comes to Marat, you can predict anything you want but you will never know the outcome. Techniques wise Marat has everything to go all the way in Paris. In Melbourne his biggest "irritator" was Roger Federer, who had beaten him in semis the year before. In Paris it was JCF, who stopped him in semis there in 2002. Looks like Marat dealt with Ferrero and thought his mission was accomplished and wasn't in the mood to fight further.
