PARADORN, RODDICK, SAFIN ALL WIN AT THAILAND OPEN
Paradorn Srichaphan didn't find it easy, but he managed to overcome Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland 6-4 7-6(7-3) before a crowd of nearly 10,000 to reach the second round of the Thailand Open.
Chiudinelli is not a name that is well known, but he demonstrated that at the top level everyone knows how to play and he stretched Paradorn throughout the match. The first set was only decided in Paradorn's favour when his opponent briefly buckled under pressure and double-faulted three times with Paradorn leading 5-4.
In the second set, although Paradorn broke again to lead 5-3, he was unable to serve out for victory. Marco allowed him only one point on his serve and took the set to a tiebreak, but ‘Ball' lifted his game to a new level in the tiebreak and swept through for the loss of just three points.
Andy Roddick also won, just 24 hours after arriving from his Davis Cup success in the United States. A little jet-lagged, his game was sometimes a little below par, although his famous serve was in full working order.
He beat Arvind Parmar, a lucky loser who got into the draw when another payer withdrew with an injury, 6-1 6-4. There was just one mini-crisis for the world number two, when he faced a break point when down 3-2 in the second set. But Roddick responded with a spectacular smash, and then broke to lead 4-3.
It is not often that Roddick plays before so many people in a first round match, and he was impressed.
"It's amazing how popular tennis is here. I think Paradorn pretty much deserves all the credit for that," said Andy.
And the match?
"The first set went pretty routine. The second set it was closer, but in two of the service games that he held I think I had break points. I'm just happy to get through."
Marat Safin's match against Noam Okun of Israel was entirely without incident, which in itself is newsworthy. The third seeded Russian has been known to drop his shorts after hitting a winner that pleased him, as he did at the French Open this year. He has also been known to smash a racket or three, as he has done on many occasions.
But the storm clouds were absent as he won 6-2 6-3, with everything going as smooth as silk, as the sponsor airline might say. That's largely because Safin was never placed under any pressure, so he stayed cool and collected. He also hit some terrific forehands and some decent returns, and he didn't face a break point in the entire 63-minute match. In fact, he was only twice taken to deuce.
He broke in the first game when Okun hit his second double-fault, and he broke again to lead 4-1 when a big forehand forced his opponent to net a backhand. In the second set, Marat broke again in the opening game when Okun double-faulted, and then he broke again for the match when a good return forced Okun to net another backhand.
"I was playing well and have enough confidence," said Marat, who recently won a tournament un China. "Hopefully I will stay this way until the end of the year and keep my tennis at the same level."
The former world number one and US Open champion has been impressed with his first trip to the Thailand Open.
"I'm surprised at how big the crowd is in the first few days," he said. "They are interested, and it's a great stadium. I'm having fun. It's a great place, and I'm surprised so many people are interested in tennis. And they like me also."

from atp site
Safin: “I'm happy with my game and I have enough confidence to play this kind of tennis. I am aiming to make the Tennis Masters Cup at the end of the year. The tournament win in Beijing pushed me up and I have a lot of confidence, so there is a different situation. Before Beijing I did not think I would win a tournament this year, but now I have to keep this rhythm as confidence and motivation is hard to get.”
“For every player, they need confidence. If you have confidence you enjoy being on the court, if you have no confidence then it gets to your head. I was number one four years ago, and this year I started at 89, now I'm in the top 10. Which is not bad, it’s a good jump, especially when I was injured last year. You comeback by trying, you fight all day with everything you have. If you lose matches, you lose your confidence. If you win matches, you keep your confidence, it's as simple as that.”
“I'm surprised the people here really love tennis. They are so happy, so enthusiastic, and I'm surprised they like me.”

;DHi everybody, Yesterday, I've got a last minute ticket to see Marat. He played really awesome, dominated all court. Seems that his shots controlled his opponent and public. I can't remember the last time, I saw him play like this. (Maybe he did but that matches didn't broadcast.) I've seen Roger, Andy and Marat yesterday. All I can say is, if this 3 guys continue playing in this level, (Or even other guys improve but Marat still maintain his.) The Thailand Open Trophy will be in Marat's hands on Sunday. So keep your finger cross, our MAN is the best. Welcome Jasmine. My first question to you: WAS HE REALY THAT GOOD?! Or was your opinion a lil' biased , and was it just the fact that a player like Marat always totally dominates a player like the guy he played?
