Oh the tie doesn't look very hard now. We saw what Youzhny did to the best Thai player, and there's also Marat....

I like Paradorn a lot, but let's face reality: he's the only one who can be dangerous in this team..... and those days he's not that dangerous anyway....

Davis Cup team leaves for Russia
Published on Sep 21, 2004
[TENNIS] The Thai Davis Cup team left for Moscow last night for their mission impossible against hosts Russia in the World Group Playoff tie scheduled for this weekend.
The country’s top two men’s players, Paradorn Srichaphan and Danai Udomchoke, along with doubles specialists Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana, will be under the supervision of nonplaying captain Chanachai Srichaphan.
The Thai team will be battling the powerful Russia for a place in the elite World Group next year.
Thailand beat Uzbekistan in April’s qualifying zone to reach the playoffs for the third consecutive year. The Kingdom has never gone beyond the playoffs, losing to England 32 in 2002 in Birmingham and 41 to the Czech Republic in Bangkok last year.
“We are underdogs in the tie, but it doesn’t mean we’re going there without hope. You don’t know what is going to happen in tennis,’’ said Chanachai, who admitted that playing on clay will be a major problem for his squad.
“Russian players are born and grow up on clay. Our team are more familiar with hard surfaces, so they will have the advantage, not to mention the crowds behind them.
However, we will have a few days to get used to the conditions and we’ll see what happens,’’ said the Thai captain.
Thai ace Paradorn lost to Russian No 2 Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets on Saturday in the Beijing Open. The defeat on a hard court was not the moral boost the Thai was hoping for as he next plays the Russian on clay, his worst surface.
“Clay is not my favourite and playing a clay specialist on that surface in front of their home crowd is really tough. I can say that Russia is the heavy favourite in the tie,’’ said Paradorn, who is ranked No 20 in the world.
Newly crowned Beijing Open champion Marat Safin, who reappeared in the top 10 this week at No 9, will represent the host team as the No 1 player with Youzhny as their No 2 singles player. Rising star Igor Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko are lined up for the doubles.
The RussiaThailand tie starts on Friday and the first two singles matches can be seen live on UBC’s channel 30 from 4pm.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be the guest of honour at the opening ceremony of the Thailand Open next Tuesday at 7pm. After the ceremony, reigning US Open champion Roger Federer will play his opening match.
Joining the prime minister at the opening ceremony will be several tennis stars competing in this year's Thailand Open, including Andy Roddick, Carlos Moya, Marat Safin and Paradorn.
