Well now the US Open is sadly over for Marat i think we should now turn our minds to China (Beijing Open Thread already made) and towards his loyal Davis Cup team due to take place on the 24-26 September where they will face the one-sided Thailand and so should be a easy victory for the Russians.hopefully with the captain leading the way.But a match with Schrichapan should be good. Also the Russians should have a advantage as this tie will be held on Clay.
Russia team to be led by Marat Safin will include : Mikhail Youzhny. Igor Andreev. Nikolay Davydenko. With Dimitry Tusanov as back up if any player is to withdraw from injury.
Team Captain. Shamil TARPISCHEV
The thai team will include Paradorn SRICHAPHAN, Danai UDOMCHOKE, Sonchat RATIWATANA, Sanchai RATIWATANA.
Sports Palace "Luzhniki", Moscow, RUS Stadium Capacity: 9235 24 September - 26 September 2004 Day 1: 1300hrs (GMT 0900hrs) Day 2: 1400hrs (GMT 1000hrs) Day 3: 1300hrs (GMT 0900hrs) Surface: Clay (Red Clay) - Indoors Ball Type: Roland Garros French Open

This is an interview that was in my local magazine talking about his views on the Davis Cup.
INTERVIEWER: Marat, how is the taste of this victory in the Davis Cup in 2002 compared to the US Open in 2000.?
MARAT SAFIN: It's two completely different stories. I mean, when I won the US Open back in 2000, I couldn't believe that I could beat Pete Sampras in the finals. I was still too young to win that kind of tournament. I was so happy, but I didn't know how to enjoy it. Right away I had to fly to Tashkent to play another tournament. This victory, you know, it's a team tournament. We won, we we're basically the world champions back then. We have nothing now except a tie against Thailand in a couple weeks which i am completely going to focus on. I don't have to go to many tournaments, I don't have to rush, I don't have anything to do next week thanks to my performance in Flushing Meadows last week, so I have to enjoy. I will enjoy, of course. Concerning 2002 i want to congratulate all my team, all the players. They deserve it. Yevgeny, he played great. He saved so many times the Russian team. Our captain, he was great. He was perfect. He was supporting us during all the match. Of course, Mikhail for that victory that basically nobody expect that he could win after two sets 2-Love down. He surprised I think even himself. He showed that he's a real man, he's a Russian man, he knows how to fight, he knows how to come out of such a difficult situation. He got a big thanks from everbody in the camp after that.. I'm was happy, glad. I could not describe what I was feeling back then.It was truely amzing. It's just something that is just so great, it's the best. Better than sex, you can say that (smiling)

I'm going to really miss not having Yevgeni Kafelnikov on the team He was definitely the rock for his teammates, supporting them and leading them all to victory Thanx for the article SAFINNO1 ;D

I personally think that Russia pound for pound are a very good all round team. As we all now Marat can do anything on the court. Youzhny he now believes he can upset big players after the 2002 epic and just beat Nalbandian which proves his point. Igor Andreev has had a steady year and produced some good tennis to get a good ranking. Davydenko brilliantly talented and also had a solid year and is also capable of winning medium profile tournaments. last but not Least Dimitry Tursanov who i think will be a big talent in the next couple of years who was also the conquror of Marat at his graveyard place Wimbledon.
but by no means Yvgeny Kafelnikov (R.I.R- Rest in Retirment).will absolutely be missed.

how long do u guys think tursunov will stay with the russian team? Well, the commentators told last year already that he was pretty angry at the Russian Tennis Fed. because he didn't get any help from them when he needed it and as he was applying for the US citizenship he didn't accept Shamil T.'s offer to join the Russian Davis Cup team. Now for some reason his getting the US citizenship has been lingering, haven't heard of the reasons though.
