Man, I hate the dutch television stations They cannot air anything live ofcourse, because of the time difference, but there's no attention for the tournament at all here. All the dutch players have withdrawn, maybe that's why.

Just a little update from a friend who saw the match live: Marat came out in a black shirt (Kiefer in white) but just before they started, he asked the umpire for someone to go to his locker and get a white shirt for him because he was too hot in black. After rain delay he came out in the back shirt though... Marat was looking good and playing good tennis but he just wasn't match fit, unlike Kiefer, who seems to have reached his peak. Marat's tennis was competent, but lacking finesse that comes from match practice. By the third set, he was still fighting but just coldn't find that extra 10% energy to raise his game and correct his shots But it was by no means another 'wimbledon' moment - he was fighting until the end!! Barry Cowan was commentating (ex-UK player) and he was saying Marat shold not be worried about his performance at all - his tennis was good, he just needs more hours on the court to get himself back into the swing of things, and he was playing a guy who is very very pumped up at the moment, having reached so many finals lately. Barry expects Marat will come into his own at Cincy, and then reach top-form at US Open. Anything else would burn him out too quickly, so losing today could be indirectly helpful ;D (BTW She's not suggesting Marat lost deliberately!! ) Because of rain delay, Marat seemed to lose his rhythm a little and he really wanted to play, but umpire said no, short rain delay. Only Walt & Peter in the box, Dasha wasn't there at all. Marat himself looked quite happy when he came on court though, and was smiling/joking a little bit

Hot Kiefer Upsets Safin
Nicolas Kiefer continued his hot North American hard court form with a 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-6(2) win over 2000 Toronto and US Open champion Marat Safin in 2 hr., 43 min. – the longest match of the tournament to date. Kiefer, who has reached four US hard court finals this season, advanced to the Montreal semifinals in 1999. The former world No. 4 next meets Spain's David Ferrer.
Fourth seed Carlos Moya extended his unbeaten record against fellow Spaniard this season to 14 matches when he defeated Fernando Verdasco 6-7(9), 6-3, 6-4. Moya is chasing his second ATP Masters Series title of the year, having won in Rome.
Frederik Niemeyer became the only Canadian to advance to the second round when he defeated Spain's David Sanchez 6-1, 6-4.
Australian qualifier Todd Reid defeated Roland Garros champion Gaston Gaudio 7-692), 5-7, 6-3, snapping the Argentine's streak of reaching four consecutive finals dating back to his Paris triumph.

Marat was looking good and playing good tennis but he just wasn't match fit, unlike Kiefer, who seems to have reached his peak. Marat's tennis was competent, but lacking finesse that comes from match practice. By the third set, he was still fighting but just coldn't find that extra 10% energy to raise his game and correct his shots i agree. i watched the match and marat was showing moments of brilliance and at some points was really fired up. but because of his lack of match experience compared to kiefer, still fell short. BUT... the volleying and the first serves are still kinda inconsistent. and yep...he was fighting tooth and nail till the end. well...i hope so oh yeah...he looked quite happy. and he was really positive all the way... except for the last few games of the 3rd set. PS: juanqui was watching the match with his girlfriend. and looked really happy. despite the injury... then again, i wouldn't expect him to be moping at length abt it... PPS: i forgot to mention sth. marat called for a trainer in the 2nd last game of the 3rd set. apparently it was sth wrong with his foot. the trainer took a look then went off. but i think it was mentioned that marat would get it seen to again after the match. not sure what happened to his foot so... ANYBODY KNOWS??
