Safin Awarded Wild Card into Toronto Former World number one Marat Safin has been awarded a wild card into the Rogers Cup, an ATP Masters Series event, which will be contested from July 21-27 at the Rexall Centre in Toronto. Canadians Frank Dancevic, Frederic Niemeyer and Peter Polansky will also be among the 56 players competing at the hard-court tournament. “We are thrilled to add Marat, Frank, Fred and Pete to the main draw of Rogers Cup,” said tournament director Karl Hale. “They will add excitement and high-level tennis to one of the best player fields in the world.” Safin, who beat Israeli qualifier Harel Levy in the 2000 Rogers Cup final, beat Top 10 players Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka en route to The Championships semifinals at Wimbledon last week. “I’m excited to return to Toronto where I had my breakthrough on tour in 2000,” said Safin, who clinched the 2000 US Open and 2005 Australian Open crowns. “I am grateful to Tennis Canada for giving me the wild card and after a great Wimbledon, I feel that I will be a strong competitor at Rogers Cup.”The 23-year-old Dancevic, who is currently No. 99 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, was a quarterfinalist at the Rogers Cup last year (l. to Nadal). Dancevic, a native of Niagara Falls, also reached the Indianapolis final (l. to Tursunov). The 32-year-old Niemeyer, who will join world No. 1 Daniel Nestor as the Canadian doubles team at the Olympics Games in Beijing next month, will compete at the ATP Masters Series event for the 11th time. Polansky is a 20-year-old from Thornhill, Ontario. The Rogers Cup is owned by Tennis Canada and is celebrating its 127th anniversary. www.atptennis.com/1/en/2008news/toronto_wildcards.asp

'... after a great Wimbledon ...' Never a phrase I expected to hear uttered from the Big Yin's lips! LMAO. Glad he's been rumbled. Maybe that same positive outlook will materialise over other tournaments where 'I don't do well ...' ;D

from Rogers Cup OS www.rogerscupmen.com/3/en/news/2008/playerarrivals.aspOur boy is working hard. ;D Nadal and Djokovic Arrive at Rexall Centre July 18, 2008 With main draw action for the Rogers Cup set to get underway in just a couple of days, players from the ATP Tour have touched down in Toronto and made their way to Rexall Centre for practice. Many of the sport’s biggest stars have already been spotted around the grounds making last minute preparations before main draw play begins on Monday. The biggest names seen so far are reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal of Spain and defending Rogers Cup champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia. Djokovic arrived in Toronto on Thursday evening and spent his Friday working on his game on centre court with both countryman Janko Tipsarevic and Croatia’s Mario Ancic. Meanwhile, 2005 Rogers Cup winner Nadal landed at Pearson International Airport early on Friday and showed up at Rexall Centre in the evening for his first practice of the week. Several other top players have also been on site in the past couple of days. Russia’s Marat Safin, the 2000 Rogers Cup champion who received a wildcard into the main draw after his stunning semifinal run at Wimbledon, was around on Thursday practicing with Spain’s Tommy Robredo. In addition, players like world No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko, No. 10 Stanislas Wawrinka (Switzerland), Richard Gasquet (France), Tomas Berdych (Czech Republic), Mikhail Youzhny (Russia), Marcos Baghdatis (Cyprus) and Philipp Kohlschreiber (Germany) are currently in Toronto warming up for the tournament. Qualifying action begins Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. and the official main draw will take place on the Stage of Champions at 2:00 p.m.
