It always amazes me people how surprised and upset everyone gets with difficult draws he gets all the time. What do you expect guys??? He is not a top 10 player anymore, not even top 50 to have easy starting matches. He put himself in a tough situation with rankings so life is never easy these days nevermind~I'm glad that he has confidence in himself now even facing such a difficult situation. And that's enough.

Indeed..he had to meet a top seeded player in the 2nd or 3rd round. On one hand, it's pretty good that he has a clash with Davydenko considering the fact that Marat knows very well his style. They train together in the Davis Cup and not only. On the other hand, this advantage comes with the reverse, and to that adds Koyla's magnificent resistance on court so 5 setters won't be a problem for him and also the superior speed and the top-spin. But what the hell, let's be positive about it.

but Marat has power and wider selection of shots and play style, he has the big serve, powerful groundstrokes, netplay etc. Hopefully Kolya is tired from the Poertschach tournament.

Lets not get carried away - 1 step at a time - lets beat the qualifier first! Bit of a bitch Kolya possibly awaits in round 2 but if he wants to progress in Grand Slams he;s gotta beat the best.
COME ON MARAT!!!!!!!!!!

Draw thoughts: *Marat: one step at a time, don’t worry about who else is in the section, focus on the qualifier *Young-Ginepri: one US guy in round 2 … can’t say the same of the rest of the boys -- *shrug* oh well *ooh 1st rounders: Wawrinka-Kohlscreiber … Monfils-Clement … Nieminen-Kiefer *Coria’s in the main draw?? (and against Robredo in Round 1 ... interesting) *Guga-PHM: I really don’t want that to be Guga farewell match, but … *Lleyton & Marcos return!

The draw is finalized. Marat will play Jean-René Lisnard in the 1st round. Davai & Udachi On a personal note, there is one fellow countryman of mine in the main draw ;D 17 years after the last time another portuguese player passed the Quallies, Frederico Gil will play Jeremy Chardy in Rd1. Vamos miúdo!

One step at a time ... but I've started looking ahead too. My money is on the Big Yin for a good run if he keeps the head and stays focused. He's got all the shots needed to go all the way, he just needs to keep telling himself that. He can play pretty nifty shots at the net (another weapon) ... and he can win tiebreaks now!!! And he's smiling again. A very good sign. Most importantly, his fairy godmother will be fluttering over him with her fairy dust. And nagging. Go for it Big Yin. I'm off work to watch this ... put a smile on my face.

Jean-René Lisnard will take on Marat Safin. Never faced each other - He's ranked 229 in the world but has been in top 100 and must be playing well as he beat Zhenya Korolev to qualify for RG. Main strength is his forehand with a normal backhand! Nice opening match for maratski!

hey we're also making another assumption that everybody has overlooked when we are discussing whether or not safin can get past Davydenko. Its whether Davydenko will get past Thomas Johannson in the first round. I know 99% Davydenko will win. But there is still that small chance he might not. especially coming right off a grueling tournament, we don't know when he'll be playing and might be tired. Even if he does get past Johannson, Safin will be the fresher of the two.

hey why not? I mean he doesn't have a great chance of being in the final, but its not impossible. he certainly has the ability to do it. Stranger things have happened in Tennis. like Goran, at age 31, ranked 125 and winning wimbledon 2001. and Andrei Medvedev ranked 100 and getting to the finals of 1999 French Open. Marat is infinitely more talented than medvedev and seems to be getting his old form back. If he plays at his best form, he can beat anybody and he knows it!!
