i have some question about how Russian give names to their kids... 1. If a woman's Russian and she has a daughter but she's not married, what would be her daughter's middle name and last name? 2. how about If the woman has a daughter but her husband's not Russian? This thread has been dead for too long LOL ;D 1. In Russia all middle names independent of marital status are formed from the father's name and mean the son of or the daughter of. Like my father's name is Anatoly and I am Anna Anatolyevna. Andrey Shevchenko's Dad's name is Nikolay and he is Andrey Nikolaevich. Like Marat Mikhailovich 2. That I have no idea about. I guess it all depends on where the husband is from and how they decide it between themselves

Now that this thread is alive again, let me ask you one question, Annie:
I've been trying to learn the russian alphabet and I guess I was doing fine, until I saw that picture of Marat from Marie Claire. It says: "Oh, Marat!", right? If it is so, then why it's written: Mapam. Shouldn't it be: Mapat ?

Noemi is absolutely right mari this is a cursive way of writing T in Russian ;D Some lettes actually vary in writing depending whether they are cursive or printed. Dina it really is very individual. Independent of whether the man is marrying a foreigner or a Russian, she can either keep her maiden surname or take her husband's, it's anyone's personal choice, you are not obliged to take your husband's name...only if you want to

Nope.. letter t does not exist LOL. it's m in cursive/handwritten and it would be ò in printed. I promised a friend to write out a Russian alphabet in written letters, how we handwrite it because she is learning Russian too. So i will do that and scan it and then will post it here so it's easier to understand

Not that it doesn't exist in the russian alphabet... And don't worry Mari, it's not that bad once you get used to it...kind of like learning a secret code or something...hehehehe

ok as for t. t as it is written in small letters in English doesn't exist at all LOL. It is either T - block capital, ò - block small letter or m - small handwritten LMAO ;D ;D ;D Seriously, don't litter your brain with this for now As for online Russian languages - it could be loads of fun and I am eager to help, we could do phonetics and pronounciation through Skype or MSN and have grammar and writing in here on this board ;D You guys just have to give me topics you want to discuss and words you want to learn and all and I am more than willing to help out
