I'm from the United States from a state called Iowa. Iowa is an agricultural area so it is filled with corn and soybean fields, pigs and cattle and lots of small towns - my hometown has a population of 600 people. Everyone is very friendly and helpful and drugs and crime are not much of a problem. It is very flat (there aren't any mountains) and there aren't very many trees. Iowa can be very pretty in the summer when all the crops a growing, but during the fall and winter there is lots of bare dirt. It does snow here in the winter, so normally you don't have to look at the bare fields.

Hi Everybody
I just couldn't resist! I have to tell you about California and Los Angeles--definitely one of the best places in the world to visit. I live in Pasadena, California-just 15 minutes away from Los Angeles, and about 30 min from the beaches. One of my favorite things about Cali is the cultural diversity, I mean on any given day you can run into someone who comes from the otherside of the world, like India, Russia, Ethiopia, Iran, China, Germany, UK, Mexico, Argentina-the list is endless--it's amazing.
Plus, the best Mexican food ever! I mean if you like Mexican food that is. Plus, for the most part people are super cool with everybody, many parties and many laughs. In some places you can run into the most beautiful men in women you have ever seen in person, all real too. But then there's the ones who aren't real, but nonetheless amazing in their own way with the bleach blonde hair and boobs way out to there! Some people say Angelenes are shallow, and that may be a little bit true, but even if we are, we'll kick it with anybody who likes to have fun! Plus, who wouldn't want to live in a place where you could run into Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias making out on a bench at the beach, or Pamela Anderson saving a puppy on the freeway?

ASIASingapore by sirius21well, i'm from singapore, which is an island state at the tip of the malay peninsula, in south east asia. contrary to popular belief, WE ARE NOT PART OF CHINA. i have no idea why ppl think we're part of china, perhaps it's due to the fact that the chinese are the majority race here. well, besides the chinese, we've got malays, indians and as my american lecturer nicely puts it, OTHERS (which basically means ppl of races other than the 3 mentioned). so we've got a rather diverse mix of ppl. the land's pretty flat too, with the highest point on the entire island being only abt 600 metres or so high. hehe... erm... because we're such a small country, u can pretty much drive from one end of the country to the other from west to east in about 1 hour or so... yepz. small and cosy, that's us. oh yeah... like most countries around this region, South East Asia, we were formerly under colonial rule... in our case, we were under British rule for...about... 150 years or so before we gained independence... yeah... it's a long complicated story abt how we gained our independence so i'll just leave it as that. oh, did i mention that it's hot and humid here all year round? cos we're just slightly north of the equator, by about 1 degree or so...SO....welcome to the tropics! The Philippines by Carrie_msWow! This thread is really nice! Anyway, I come from the Philippines. Our country is composed of 7,107 islands, and it is divided into 3 main islands: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Manila is the capital (where I live). Since we are divided into many islands, there are about 100 regional dialects used here! Our national language is Pilipino. By the way, next to USA and UK, we are the world’s third-largest English-speaking country! Because of this, tourists rarely encounter problems in communicating with the Filipinos. We basically, came from the Malay and Indonesian race. We were colonized by Spain for almost 300 years, and after that it was USA’s turn. We gained our independence in 1946. Before and in-between those times, we were also engaged in barter with the Chinese and the Arabs. The result: the Philippines became a blend of cultures. Most say that our most outstanding features are our hospitality and our ability to find humor in everything! The Philippines has a lot of beautiful beaches and other tourist spots. It’s great to visit the Philippines during summer, which is around March to May. Although it is really humid, there are a lot of fiestas, beach parties and concerts. Our rainy season begins in June and ends around September. From October to February, the climate here is cool. If anyone of you is planning to visit the Philippines go and see this site: www.wowphilippines.com.ph (sorry Ruth, for the plugging and thanks!). fficeffice" /> By the way, we are passionate about basketball, but we exel in sports that do not require being tall. These include: Biliards (Efren "Bata" Reyes and Django Bustamante), Bowling (Paeng Nepomuceno) and Boxing (Manny Pacquio). Ok. I’ll stop now. Chinaby gracie_kekeI'm from China. And I live in Shanghai. I think u should know it. Last year's tennis masters cup, remember? Marat had come here. by smiling_mehey, guys! I 'm from chongqing, China. maybe someone don't know where chongqing is. I guess Gracie_keke should know, right? ah... chongqing is located in the southwest of China. do you know the hotpot? it's kind of cooking, very spicy, ooh, just what I like. you should have a taste if there is a chance. it's one of the city's feature! well, if you wanna have a trip of three gorges, chongqing is your beginning. by Lihui87[/i[ Hello Everyone!

by Vennie Hello!Everyone,I'm from China. My hometown is a small city named "MeiShan"I think many Chinese people also don't know where it is~But I say DO YOU KNOW SUDONGPO?maybe somebody know that.SUDONGPO is a people's name. His father and brother and him are famous poets in China.Chinese people always call them"SANSU"There maybe is a beautiful city~I really don't know how can I say.Maybe I live there for too long time~hehe~And there is a famous food named "DONGPOZHOUZI"It's very delecious~but too easy to get weight~I have heard from some old guys say that is cooked by "SUDONGPO"in first time,so we called it "DONPOZHOUZI"But I always feel so strange, why they use a people's name for a food? What do you think about?
Malaysia by Fazsafin
So well, im from Malaysia. but currently I am in Germany(to German's Girls - Hallo und Tach )
Malaysia, with 23Million Ppl is one of the fastest growth country in South East Asia. Very popular with his Petronas Twin Tower(highest Twin Tower in the World) and also a multi racial country with Malay Ethnics(we call as Bumiputra, which not only Malays, but also lot of kind of names of each Bumiputra's groups)covering up to 60%, and the rest are Chinesse-Malaysian,Indian-Malaysian etc. We have all kind of foods, traditions, langguage, harmony neighbourhood and everything..(but some medias always like to create some un-comfortable news bout our peace and harmony relationships.so guys if u heared sthing bad about my country, dont trust 100% on it,find someone who can explain to u exactly what had happened).
We also have lot of Rain-Forest Assets, beautiful beaches and islands, highest Mountain in South East Asia and 3rd longest bridge in Asia. We speak Malay langguage, and at the moment English is taking over the powerness of our langguage(which i find not very interesting, since our country is called MALAYsia, not ENGLISHsia.. d**n it!- proud of our own lgg rite! I respect german coz they are really proud of their lgg, SALUTE!)
So guys,if u want to know more bout Malaysia, feel free to ask me. no harm and i wont bite u guys! ..
See ya in the next thread!

The United Kingdom... by Ruth!
Well, most of you know I'm from England (well, someone has to live there *lol*) but I'm NOT from London, which is always what people assume. I live in a town called Birkenhead which is the 'younger sister' to the city of Liverpool, famous for The Beatles, Liverpool Football Club and.....err..... the slave trade But Liverpool won 'European City of Culture' award, so that's pretty cool!
OK.. what can I say about the UK that you might not know?.... well... we have about 6 official languages: English (obv!), Cornish, Welsh, Scots Gaelic and Irish Gaelic to name the ones I can remember The UK also has one of the highest standards of living in europe (ie, everything costs WAY too much!!) but we also have one of the lowest wages per person in europe (so we can't afford anything....) and.... errr...... the highest teen-pregnancy rate in europe *lol* We also work the longest hours in europe per week and have the highest rate of obesity behind America!
We drive on the left side of the road in MANUAL cars and we can't drive until we're 17, although at 16 we can legally drink, smoke, have sex and play the Lotto Our national sport is football (soccer) and getting drunk and we are well known for our sense of humour, which is quite dry and uses a lot of word-play (and it can be very rude too!)
We're a very patriotic nation but only the English call themselves 'British'. The Scottish, Irish & Welsh don't like us because we gave them a hard time centuries ago (talk about holding a grudge!) but we kinda like them because they have cute accents and they're worse than us at sport
Most of you know we have a monarchy (the Royal Family) and I'm honestly the only girl in the UK who DOESN'T have a crush on Prince William. Most Britons don't mind the monarchy > they're good for gossip and they make the UK look like it still has money and prestige
Most English don't consider themselves 'european' > that's just a geographical reference, and a lot of europeans don't consider the English as a 'real' part of Europe. We like being the awkward island that no-one likes but everyone has to respect And we have ruled so many different countries over the centuries, that we have many powerful friends around the world, so we don't care if France thinks we're crap or Germany thinks we're crazy
Lonely Planet descibed the British Isles as 'the worlds most beautiful island' and I have to agree > the countryside is so unique and very magical - very primative. When the Romans came to Britian they called it 'the magic isles' and they were scared of the native Britains because the Romans thought we had magic powers.... some say we still do
OK> I've rambled on about my country for long enough, but since I'm like the only Brit posting here, I thought I'd do a thorough job!! Hope you enjoyed my little snap-shot of the UK
Poland by magda aka a_cap I'm from Poland.
It's a country in the centre of Europe (if someone doesn't know...). In the south we've got mountains and in north there is the Baltic Sea, so everyone can find something for him. You can come here in every season because in summer you can lie on nice beaches and in winter you can ski in the mountains. I live in the middle north of Poland but here is also very interesting landscape. Here is many lakes and forests around, basically I live in the cleanest region of Poland (lucky me ).
A lot of people think that Poland is a dirty, dull country, but it's not like that anymore. Yes, we were communist country and it was difficult to live in that times, but since 1989 the communism is over and now we are like any other country in Europe. Of course we still have a lot of problems with our government but that's a different story (there is no country with perfect politics). We have very bloody history but I don't want to terrify you guys with stories from II world war about thousands people killed in concentration camps by Germans and Russians (ups... ). That's not my point. I want to show you a country with many beautiful monuments and kind, receptive people.
Poland is full of contrasts. On the one hand there is a lot of modern cities and on the other hand we have many traditions which you can see mostly on the villages. People are also full of contrasts. In one moment we can be very happy and enjoy our live and right after that we can fall into depression . But everybody says that the Polish are very hospitable so you can come here without any doubts that you won't be well treated.
However the Polish is very strange nation. We often joke about ourselfs and our country, but we don't like when other people joke about us (pretty sick huh...? ). We also like to complain about the weather: in winter it's too cold, in summer it's too hot etc. Actually we are always dissatisfied.
But we are not as that bad. We REALLY like parties, especially those with a lot of alcohol . So if you come to Poland in every house you will be welcomed with a bottle of vodka . That's strange because we think that we are very Catholic country .
Oh, and we have only two heroes: the Pope and Adam Malysz (Polish ski jumper).
Well, that's all. I hope I didn't scare you and you will visit my country one day...
Germany
by sara166 I'm from Germany.
I guess you all know where it is but for those who don't, it's between France and Poland but borders on many other countries as well. I live in the Southern part near Stuttgart. This region is famous for the 'Black Forrest' and of course for Mercedes Benz cars. The weather is actually very moderate but people still find reasons to complain We have lots of funny dialects over here and many Western Germans still don't like the Eastern Germans. I guess I won't have to tell you the historic part since that's what most people connect Germany with. But the country improved a lot since those bad times. Germans are crazy about football (soccer) and there are always conflicts between the British and the German fans. We can be pretty arrogant when it comes to this sport There used to be quite a tennis mania when Boris Becker was playing but since he's gone we don't have many good players anymore and people sort of forgot about tennis These days people love the Formula One races and especially their hero Michael Schumacher. And since a_cap mentioned it, we also like Ski-Jumping...Malysz is such a big rival of the German team but I like him so much with his funny nose For what else is Germany famous? Hmm I think for the 'Oktoberfest' in Munich and the 'Loveparade' in Berlin....and probably for the beer
Hope you liked my little report about Germany. This thread is very interesting, thanks Nicki
by ms_star Hi I`m also from Germany.
Sara has told you already everything
So i will only say a lil bit about where i live. I live in a lil village, it is ca. an hour away from Cologne. Sometimes i would like to live in a city but sometimes i also like it to live here. Well we have many people in my age living here so thats pretty fine

EUROPE PART2 Estonia by MariaVHi, I come from Estonia. Most of you probably know nothing about this country. Well, it's a tiny country in the north-western part Europe at the Baltic Sea with ca. 1,4 million inhabitants. We were part of the Soviet Union for a bit over 50 years (1940-1991) and Russia is still our neighbour . We have many Russian-speaking people here. We have our own language (Estonian) which is kind of a miracle for so few people, it's a Finno-Ugric language and not the easiest language to learn as many people say. Finland lies across the sea from us and we like to think of us as a part of Scandinavia. I was born and live in Estonia's capital Tallinn which has the population of almost 400 000 (almost a third of the whole population of the country). For those seriously interested in Estonia I recommend www.estonica.org, a thorough encyclopedic site. Well, we have very flat landscape, nothing to be called a mountain, some small hills in the southern part of the country, we DON'T have snow all the time , there is not snow even every Christmas, actually there is less snow with every winter (usually from December to March, April, sometimes it snows in November, too) although last winter was colder and snowier than for decades. For that we had a really hot summer like the whole Europe, sometimes summers are not so hot and sunny. We have a lot of tourists here, more in summer, of course, but you're welcome any time! We have an exciting medieval town preserved in the heart of Tallinn, it's something like in Germany and the Netherlands. We used to be under German rule for ca. 700 years or so (the Baltic Germans). From 1 May 2004 Estonia will be a member of the European Union. Compared to the Western Europe we are still a cheap country, but in 2006-2007 we'll probably also have euro as a currency instead of our "kroon". Estonian Tennis Union was founded in 1922, we have two women in the top 200, no good men. Only Toomas Leius has played in the Soviet Union's Davis Cup team and won Boys' Singles in Wimbledon in 1959. I don't know if you've ever heard of any Estonian athlete, Erki Nool became our first male summer Olympic champion after regaining independence in Sydney 2000 in decathlon (athletics/track & field), so wonderful memories through TV for me, Raechyl . Mart Poom is a football goalie at present playing for Sunderland in England, but he played also in Portsmouth and with Derby County in the Premiership, he is a really great guy, intelligent, he was also born in Tallinn and lived not far from me. Too bad he didn't go to ManU, he was a possible candidate, and he is certainly not worse than Howard, he was too nice to leave Derby at the right time! Football, basketball, track & field, cycling, cross-country skiing are probably the most popular sports in Estonia. Well, enough for now I guess. France by GwenHi guys! My name is Gwenaëlle (everybody calls me Gwen, easier) and I'm from France. I live in a little city called Saulx les Chartreux (don't be scared even in France nobody knows this city and everybody looks surprised when I pronounce this name), it's near our famous capital Paris (20 km). What can I say about Paris? It's said to be one of the most romantic towns in the world, it may be true but I think that as long as you are with someone you love you think every place is romantic.. But it's true that we have the most beautiful avenue in the world, the place is very beautiful and at the end of the year there are many lights everywhere, decorations... it's great, but be careful if you come here, it's also very very expensive!! I'm a student in Paris, near "la place de la Bastille" , famous because of the French Revolution, and the neighbourhood the college is located is "le Marais", it's very known in Paris because there are many gays here, therefore it's very tolerant, you can be free to look whatever you want, nobody criticizes you! Great isn't it The french favorite sport is football and the most famous club in the capital is Paris Saint Germain (usually called PSG) and the biggest rival is a club from the south of France l' Olympique de Marseille (called OM). Some supporters are very violent when the two teams meet, many policemen are presents for the matches when they play against each other, usually many suuporters are hurt or arrested because of violence... what a shame!! We're also known for being rubbers and not very friendly (I'm not very proud of this image): I don't completely agree=> I think we are just as friendly as anybody else, I don't know what there is this cliché about us! But for being rubbers, I can't say that this image is not justified: many kids and teenagers have a bad behaviour and it's really sad, but there is another pb: parents don't really explain their children what is a good behaviour, what you can do or not, and it's not a good education I think. They should be a little bit more strict. But they are not the majority!! Many of us are honest, I swear!! Frogs and snales, you know these animals, don't you? We too! Yes it's part of our national cuisine, yes some peaple eat them, no not everybody does it and even for the ones who do it it's not a meal very popular in France. Personally, I've always hated frogs, and I don't really appreciate snales either. But some do! We don't drink wine only, we even drink more water than wine (yes it's true!!). The French also love parties!! And drinking as well! I got to admit that even if never get drunk, i like vodka (no, not because of Marat ,just because I really think it has a very good taste) coktails, cidre, white wine and bear, but I hate red wine and champagne (what a shame for a French girl). I don't think we are the ones who drink the most in Europe but we're the one who have the most medicines for depression. Oh my God, I've written so much, it's time to stop now... P.S: just a piece of info about my name: Gwenaëlle is from Britain (in France) and it means white angel or white princess (it depends on the book you open to get this info but most peaple from Britain says it means white angel). It's not very famous in France so it's not even in our calendar, but it's celebrated the 3rd November!! That's it!! Hope you're not sleeping!! Bye! The Netherlands by meHi everyone. I'm from the Netherlands, you know that tiny little country above Belgium, on the left of Germany and if you go to the west coast of England and you swim for a long time to the west, you'll end up in my country. Most of you probably have a stereotypical image of the Netherlands, we're the land of the tullips, windmills, wooden shoes (I think you call them clogs in English, sorry my English isn't that good) Legalised protitution, legalised use of (soft) drugs, dykes, gay marriages, the canals of Amsterdam, the flat landscapes, with cows, sheep, goats, horses everywhere! And well it's true. You don't come in contact with those things everyday though. It's not like I live between fields of tullips or between windmills. And I've never worn clogs in my entire life (that's more something the older farmers do and my father who's not a farmer by the way, nor am I) I've never used drugs, I'm not a prostitute, not gay and I've only been to the canals of Amsterdam once in my life. Dykes and landscapes with cows, goats, sheep and horses are a part of my everyday life though. I live right next to one of the big rivers which is protected by a dyke. Even though I live in the "randstad" (a place in the center of the Netherlands wich is ahead of the rest of the Netherlands. I think it's like a circle of 5 big cities) I live in a rural place. Right in the center of the randstad is something called "het groene hart" (the green heart) that's where I live, a small villiage in the green heart. I have to ride on a road in between the fields with cows, etc. for 7km to and from school everyday. Even though I like the mentallity in the Netherlands my biggest wish is to travel and to live abroad. Well none of you probably care about the Netherlands. But I just felt like saying something about my country. Because I AM proud of my country. We're almost the smallest country in Europe and still we play a role. (we even have the international courts in Den Haag (The Hague)) And we are by far the most progressive country in Europe, maybe even in the world. So I am proud of my country, but I can't wait to get out of here! -xxx-jes me!

Russia and Dubai by Vassily Anywho, I'm Russian, as the flag above suggests, although I live 4 kilometers from Dubai in UAE. In Russia I come from a town called Klin 80km North North West of Moscow. Probably the biggest historical value of the town is the fact that the famous Russian composer Tchaikovsky lived the last years of his life there. In fact his house is now a museum, whose visitors are 50% Japanese for some reason unknown to me. The population of the city/town (whatever)is 90000, and its economic conditions are as follows: -It is 60% self-sufficient in its vegetable needs. -70% self-sufficient in its nylon products needs. -99% self-sufficient in its alcohol needs. This is because about 5 years ago a German millioner thought of opening his bear and liquor factory in the area. Apparently he was very successful. The only alcohol product the city does not produce is wine, which is not surprizing. But no one drinks the wine in the city of Klin anyway. The city blocks are pretty neat, but the buildings are painted only from the side of the main streets, no in order to save money, but for the city mayor to put some in his pocket. The living standard is average, and is considerably higher than the rest of Russia, where acceptable standard of living is seen only around huge cities. The population is focused on improving its conditions, but does not bother to do it through the politicians. 65% of the people own mobile phones (that is 5 of my 8 friends). Most of the people are proud to be Russians, and still consider Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan a part of Russia. All the people know how to read and write, but only about 85000 use the knowledge appropriately. Half of the youth spends their free time playing computers, and all of the people aged 17-24 'hang out'. That was asummary of what I think and know about my hometown.
Now about the place I currently reside in: First of all, Dubai is not a country, contrary to what most foreigners think. It is a part of United Arab Emirates. The life standard here is roughly the highest in the world. There are no taxes at all. The Dubai International airport is the most advanced in the world. Burj-al-Arab hotel, located here, is the highest in the world, and the only one with 7 stars. Dubai has the world's largest artificial island, and the world's fastest growing airline 'Emirates' is also based here. Sorry for the repetitions, and I hope you get the general idea. People here are only 60% Arabs. Others are from India, Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, etc. Many thousands come from Europe. Official languages are Arabic, English. Urdu is widely spoken.

AUSTRALIAby RaechylIntroducing...the land Down Under, AUSTRALIA. Hi, well for those who don't know Australia, it's where the Olympics were held... Woops, forgot that we're all tennis fans here- it's home to the "Australian" Open (wow- who ever would have guessed that?!) It's a large country with a population of 20 million, come this December and it's a multicultural country. You'll find many different cultures in this country in the southern hemisphere. As a result, we get to enjoy a multitude of cusines... We're part of the monarchy, although there's the shift in ideologies, etc and those who think it's time we stood on our own two feet as a republic. For this reason the Royals seem to make the news and tabloids every two seconds...and tax payers are funding $600 000 for Prince Williams to have his little holiday! Hmmm...Australia has strong economic ties with Japan (lol- i so don't know anything) and a strong agricultural industry. (i think). Australia is a pretty big country, but most of that is unlivable space- mostly desert- but its very spacious to live in. Australia has a very relaxed vibe, and is basically a sporting nation. On weekends especially, every one of our 5 tv chanels has some sport being broadcasted ALL DAY LONG. So for the average movie buff, this can be pretty frustrating. Netball, etc, etc, etc, Rugby, *Tennis*, Soccer, pool, swimming, even lawn bowls for crying out loud. We're hosting the Rugby World Cup at the moment which is absolunately FANTASTIC. I'm from Sydney-we've got the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge- two 'landmarks'-although in my opinion, nothing exciting. Australia's pretty over-rated. So yeh...lol. G'day from the land Down Under, where we cook shrimp on the barbie. (barbie=barbecue) by ShelleyG'day mate! i'm another aussie on this board, along with Raechyl! Well Raechyl gave a great overview of Oz, couldn't have done it better myself!! But one difference between her and me is that I live in Melbourne, while she lives in Sydney, so i thought i could give u my point of view... Alright I actually don't live in Melbourne (which is the capital city of the state i live in which is Victoria). I live in a country town called Traralgon, about 2 hrs drive from the city. Traralgon is a great place, it has a population of around 20,000 ppl. This for me, is a good number, we seem to have just enough ppl, not too much, but not too little either. Melborune in general loves their sport, along with the rest of this country! Australians are generally laid-back kinda ppl (as i have heard many tourists say!). As Raechyl has sed, there is a LOT of sport on tv!!! But that suits me just fine, i've grown up with it and i love it! In terms of movies and hollywood, we have quite a few talented aussies out there making it big such as Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Namoi Watts, Heath Ledger and many others. We music, we probably haven't dominated that as much, but we do have artists such as Kylie Minogue making it big outside of Australia. While on the subject of Australia and music, i would like 2 take the opportunity to explain my very bright avatar and signatures. Okay, for those who do not know, my avatar and signatures are of an Australian singer/songwriter named Delta Goodrem. She is 19 and has produced hits such as "Born to Try" and "Lost without you", along with her #1 album "Innocent eyes". I am *obviously* a huge fan and i just wanted 2 explain 2 those who don't know who she is. At the moment she is battling Hodgskin's Disease (since July last year), which is cancer is other words. I think she is finished treatment at the end of the year and *hopefully* with the doctor's ok, she can start focusing on recovering and then on her next album. She is gonna be huge, so all i have 2 say is WATCH OUT! lol i'll stop my rambling now! If anyone else knows who she is don't be afraid 2 speak out, i'll love 2 know if anyone else besides those from oz and the uk, know her or her music! So yeh, thats my take on oz, its a great place, i'd recommend anyone from overseas to visit it at least one, u won't be dissapointed!! Luv Shelley xoox

ROTFL I can't believe that you can't post the word d**e here. Okay I know that it can be used as a curse word, but it isn't here. It's just the way those things that keep the river from flooding are called. -xxx-jes me haha ME>>> i didn't notice that...how silly... but it's good if it prevents other undesirable words from appearing. hehe. RUCINSKI>>> i'm really sorry!!!!! NICKI>>> no prob! i was too lazy to copy the flag smilies over. but the normal smilies interspersed disappeared....
