from atptennis.com and MTF Russians Safin and Tursunov Win Kremlin Cup
Russians Marat Safin and Dmitry Tursunov captured their first career ATP team title, after defeating Czech Tomas Cibulec and Lovro Zovko of Croatia 6-4, 6-2 in the Kremlin Cup final.
The pair is the first all-Russian duo to win the Moscow crown since Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev in 2004 (d. Bhupathi-Bjorkman).
They hit five aces, winning 36 0f 51 points on serve and converted three of four break point opportunities for victory in 62 minutes.
Safin, who was appearing in his first ATP doubles final since Halle in June 2005, clinched his first team crown since Gstaad in 2001 (w/Federer).
Tursunov improves to 1-3 lifetime in doubles finals. His last title-match came at Nottingham in June 2006 (l. to Erlich-Ram).
The pair was playing their sixth ATP tournament together. They made their team debut at Estoril in 2006 (l. to Arnold Ker-Friedl).
Cibulec and Zovko were competing for the first time since St. Petersburg last year (l. to Youzhny-Zimonjic).
Cibulec was appearing in his first ATP final since ‘s-Hertogenbosch 2005 (w/Friedl). The Czech was looking to clinch his fourth ATP doubles crown.
Zovko was contesting his first ATP final since Umag in 2001 (w/Ljubicic). The Croatian is 0-3 in ATP title-matches.
Safin: "It feels great to win our first title together here in Moscow in front of our home crowd."
Tursunov: "I'm happy to win my first doubles title here in Moscow. It was also the first time I won a title with my parents in the stands, so it feels really good. I think we are long ways from catching up with the Bryans but the title here helps us to boos our confidence going into the Davis Cup final. We played well during this week and I hope we can play together more times in the future."
