It's funny how everyone (incl me) noticed Spain vs Swiss (a.ka Nadal vs Fedi) tie straight away. U know, when i saw that, i thought " OMG no 1 and no2", totally forgetting that in DC, swiss is not even seeded and Spain is not even no.2 ;D. i need to break the habit (nickname:breakingthehabit haha..get it?. Gosh that was lame : of calling federer no1 and nadal no 2. Will federer even play for DC? I would looove for Marat to bash Gonzo with that superstrong double-handed back hand. KAPOW!! ;D

Okay although it's a long way to go - heck Russia aint won this years event yet but i found this article in Spanish which i have tried to translate the best i can. basically it's Feli Gonzalez view on the Russian team The Bomber of the court reviews the duel of Davis cup against the Russians, emphasizing strengths and weaknesses of the main players involved Friends: We must party against the Russians above sea level on clay, although it cannot either be too so slow court. Still we have enough time to make the election. It will be good that we talk it with Nicholas (Massú) and Hans (Gildemeister). Either vina del mar or Antofagasta. I do not have a favourite city. Nor does it bother to me. Next, I will review to the Russian team : Marat Safin, Nº 63 ;D Strengths: Marat is a great player and by something he was number one plus won 2 Grand Slams (U.S. Open 2000 and in Australia 2005). He is is recovering his high level and could be that next year already has recovered his ranking . It is a great fighter and likes to take the initiative. He is very complete and is hard to weak points . Of all the Russians, he is most complete, because in addition it can play well in all the surfaces. Weaknesses: Within his lower points it is the fact of not being so hard mentally. He gets frustrated quickly if it is not his good day and it costs to him I easily year beat him three times on three different surfaces (Roland Garros, in clay, Wimbledon, in grass, and Los Angeles, in cement). In addition i am unsure he will wont to play me in the Davis Cup! Dmitry Tursunov, Nº 20 ;D Strengths: He has had a great year and it happens through a great moment. It comes by defeating Andy Roddick in Davis cup semi's and it took them to the final. He is a player who moves very well and who also has a good return and a good misfortune. He is an unpredictable player and who in a good day can beat anyone. But not so good on clay Weaknesses: He is a player who by his style of game fails enough of the time and that can be taken advantage of. The clay is not his better surface, because his results show that! in For that reason I believe that it is difficult that he will be used in singles against Chile. Yes but he could be used in the doubles. Nikolay Davydenko, Nº 5 ;D Strengths: He is the player rising through from the Russians. He plays well in all the surfaces. During his race it shows to good results in clay and cement. He has gained titles in both fields. He is a great fighter from the start to end He is very complete To that sum he is an excellent counterattacker He has great court awarness reason why it is difficult to beat him. Also he returns well and has great shots. Weaknesses: It does not have a great service, to win many free points. Igor Andreev, N° 59 ;D Strengths: This is an exception coz , because it has not been able to play much this year because of the injuries. From April that . But equal he is the player who better adapts to the clay, reason why he will be necessary to play in Chile. He is a player offensive, complete and difficult to face. In slow fields he shows excellent triumphs. In fact, last year he beat Rafael Nadal in Valencia, where champion left. He is very offensive. Weaknesses: He does not have a great experience in Davis , which could favor to us. And in addition that has not played much this year. I have beat him the three times that we have played and the Nico (Massú) also has won to him (Athens 2004). Mikhail Youzhny, Nº 24 ;D Strengths: He is a fighter and it never lowers the arms, like Nikolay Davydenko. It is of the players whom it likes the competition. His better shot is the drop shot, with which it can complicate any player of the circuit. Has good results on cement and has now transformed into a very dangerous player. He had high productivity in the U.S. Open (semifinal) and happens through a good work Weaknesses: Has a normal serve and it does not have a range of serves . In slow clay it plays to his level, another reason why we should play them on clay Is it me or does it seem to you he is cocky and arrogant since he has beaten these player before - he seems to have an agenda with Marat. It seems he has forgotten about the last time they met in david Cup last year! PLEASE RUSSIA SHUT HIM UP AND SHOW WHO ARE THE DAVIS CUP CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UDACHI BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FEDERER TO SIT OUT DAVIS CUP Roger Federer has opted not to represent Switzerland in the opening round of the Davis Cup. In a statement posted on the Swiss Tennis Federation's website, the federation explained that Federer says he wants to focus on retaining his position as number one in the world rankings, and is concentrating on other events. Tennis fans had been hoping to see Federer face his closest rival, Rafael Nadal, when Switzerland play Spain in February. "Winning the Davis Cup is too big and too important a goal just to try it when it is not the top priority," Federer was quoted as saying on the federation's website, mytennis.ch. The Swiss federation said they understood Federer's decision, but nevertheless regretted it. Yeah, right, he could endanger his position as world No. 1 if he played DC... Can someone bring Federer back down to earth and tell him there are some unimportant people called fans who would like to see him play and fight for his country? He has so lost touch with the world around him.

How ridiculous is this guy Fed. He says he wants to be focused only in defending his number one position. Man, can't he 'waste' three days of his career just to play for his country? Plus, he is practically 'unreachable', he is not risking any points, his world number one position is based on lots of points. Doesn't Roger have a very comfortable lead, though? Look at the difference in points between number 1 and 2? Well, it's his decision, I guess.

I guess he's trying to prioritise here. And from what i gathered from the quote, it seemed like he thought both were important that he needed to choose one. Since he chose ranking, he wanted to focus to that fully w/o getting distracted by another big thing like Davis Cup. Or at least that's what i think. It is disappointing and i'm sure his fans are as disappointed, they'have been wanting him to play for Swiss for ages

I have to say that it's been a while since I've heard anything so ridiculous as this. If he doesn't want to play Davis Cup than all he had to do was say so and leave it at that. Trying to jusitfy it by saying he's worried about distractions that will endanger his number one ranking is taking people for idiots. I mean honestly, unless something drastic happens, like an injury, i don't see who or what is going to stop roger being number one. And believe me i hate saying that. Photo shoots and other media related activities, charitiy events (even though i think it's great that he wants to help those less fortunate) these things can be described as distractions. Doing your job and playing tennis is not supposed to be a distraction. Especially not when it's playing for your country. Sorry Smurf but that is a lame ass excuse.
