do you know what? i don't think we should be hard on marat. Yes he played badly, it happens. What struck me the most and mind you i did not see the whole match is that he seemed lost on the court, like he literally did not know what to do with the ball. that broke my heart. we should not get down on him at times like this becasue he is the one that suffers more than any of us when he does not perform at his best.
In fact the positive thing in all of this is that its only a bit of frustration...as long as his body is healthy then he'll be able to work on his head by getting matches under his belt...so right now i am disappointed with the result by i am not disappointed BY Marat but FOR him

Second seed Nikolay Davydenko defeats Russian compatriot Marat Safin 4-6 6-1 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open. Safin, who beat his 24-year-old friend twice already this year, couldn't overcome 63 unforced errors. Safin started the match with promising hopes breaking Davydenko in the 9th game of the first set coming to the net often and hitting up to 66% of first serves in. Claiming the first set sent Safin back to the old days, when he would slamed his racquet often after being frustrated by numerous unforced errors. Safin lost his concentration a little, putting Davydenko back in the match. Davydenko then scored 6 successive games breaking Safin three times, including once in the first game of the deciding set. Despite breaking back to level at 1-1, Safin's game went from bad to worse. He finished the game with 63 unforced errors, including 54 in the last two sets. Davydenko did a good job of putting the ball back in play one more time than Safin to force the error. The second seed will next face the winner of the match between Gilles Muller and Nicolas Lapentti. totally true annie!!!!

Totally agree with you, bia2209! Am I missing something here? Or some of us like Marat only when he is winning? I can't understand this, I'm telling you............ . That's the picture as far as I can see. Marat was off-court for 7 mounts, he cames back because of the game and his fans. He sucks today. He sucks in Monte Carlo, too. But it's OK. You blame him for his behavior, his attitude. But how can you expect him to smile at the crowd after the breaks today, when he obviously hasn't the strength of body to win the game. That's due to the lost rhytm, of course...... I understand his frustration. If you try to put yourself in his shoes, I am sure you'll understand him, too. I don't believe in miracles. I don't think that he could play his best in 3-4 mounts. But I'm ready to stand behind his back and wait........

kuniochi..thanks and welcome! I don't think we've met before...you can call me bia. I also to point out that in monte carlo he was sick as a dog and still played..;and on a slightly lighter note in that second picture that emma posted marat looks like he is putting every thing he's got with the sole intention of comepletely destroying that racket....lol makes you wonder what it would be like to be the focus on that kind of intense attention...with less destructive intentions obviously....

bia and kuniochi i agree with you girls so much! couldn't have put it better myself i watched the match and it was a hard match to watch! 1 set was fine, but then i got the feeling that he hit the 'self distruct button' and it was all downhill from there. Yes i was sad but i felt more disappointed for him ( i can imagine him being really upset about this! ) the thing is, we just need to give the guy a chance - he just came back from injury and need to build up on confidence - and then once he does, well all i got to say is WATCH OUT!!! ;D Marat will be back with a vengence!! ps: thank you to everyone for all the pictures!!!

as far as the whole "attitude" thing is concerned, i can totally see where he's coming from. i know i hate it when people are around to watch me play like crap. besides, isn't the "attitude" why people say they love him in the first place?
also, would like to say thanks to everyone, arwen, sabz, bia, kuniochi, and all else: after a disappointing match, it's great to hear from you guys! you really help to boost morale, and that's priceless, as they say ;D

Thanks Emma ;D It was to wake up to see that Marat lost. On the positive side, he played three sets and he still has the doubles. The more time on court the better preperation for the French Open. Good luck in the doubles!!! ps 3 raquets and a chair ??

OK, it's 6.30 in the morning and I just woke up. I had my laptop on because my iPOD was charging all night, I peeked in to see how things were here before I turn it off and here I am typing away at 6.30 instead of getting ready for work. How sick am I? LMAO ;D Bia, kuniochi, sabz Couldn't have put it better myself. I watched the match and I actually recorded it. and here is what I have to say. First of all a confession. I was turning on my TV yesterday and I TOTALLY admit that I sat down to watch the match to support Kolya. It always breaks my heart to see them play each other. Seriously, it's like someone sticks a knife in me and tries to rotate it round and round and round... My feelings towards Marat are always of unlimited respect and admiration (otherwise I wouldn't be here LOL) and my feelings towards Kolya are absolutely the same...I have always supported that kid and felt nothing but extreme adoration for him. I knew everyone (except for noemi maybe LOL) will be supporting Marat yesterday and I felt kinda bad because noone ever supports Kolya when these two meet...so I promised myself that this time it will be Kolya I would support. So I did. First set was beautiful. Truly was. Forget the UEs, forget all the negativity (I cannot even remember any), the game was great. The fought, they played strong, agressively at times and it was a true true pleasure for the eye. Some plays were definitely worth a final and the score totally proves it. Marat was patient, he waited and Kolya choked at a certain point, so Marat managed to make a break at 4:4. Second set was good. Despite the score. Seriously. Kolya took out a lot of lessons from the first set and as always (I have always said that it's his main characteristic: lack of physical strength makes him play intellectual tennis) he used his head and found some weaknesses in Marat's game. He served into Marat's body to make Safin's life unbearable on receipt, he ran like a maniac and pulled out every single ball, which seemed totally unreachable. It paid off very quickly. First half of the third set was good. Kolya took Marat's first serve at the very beginning, Marat broke back straight ahead. And just when you thought we were going to see a repitition of the first wonderful set... Marat misses a couple of balls.... Kolya concentrates 200 %, pushes hard and plays with such precision and brain that it's hard to even think that anything can stop him at this point. Kolya makes another break. Instead of concentration frustration visits Marat's camp. He swears, throws racquets, breaks one into a chair... same good old scenario. But you know what? I have to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed the match and I am glad I recorded it because I would gladly watch it again. It was a beautiful battle of two very talented players. And despite the fact that Marat lost this one...I so much more preferred this match to his first round boring to death game, which he won. It's still early guys. He is back, yes....but he's still not here completely and noone can blame him for it. The talent, the beauty of the game is there and you cannot take that away from him...when you watch him play you cannot help but notice that this man will probably go down in history as one of the worlds greatest tennis talents of all times Have a great day ;D

I don't understand why some ppl are being so hard! They forgot his previous victories over Kolya this year and that Marat played semis just a few weeks ago too. We don't know for sure how long will take to Marat to get his level back, it could be weeks, months or even more, but if we are real fans we'll hang in there, if someone can't deal with that idea then I suggest them to focus the attention in other players. Who said that to be a safinette was easy?! BUT I LOOOOVE IT!!!! CHEER UP GUYS!
