The Incomparable Marat Safin



The more honored name of all the ones that appears in the official edition list of players of the 17th Estoril Open is Marat Safin - that returns to Jamor after participating in the editions of 2002 (second round) and 2004 (final). João Lagos rejoices with the presence of a charismatic and virtuous champion who jumped from the anonymity to the fame in portuguese tournaments organized by João Lagos Sports: "Marat Safin surpassed the qualifying to arrive the quarter finals of a challenger in Azores in 1997 and in the following week won its first international title in another challenger in Espinho; three years later he smashed Pete Sampras in the US Open final and in the press conference that followed his victory he considered this passage through Portugal as decisive in the launching of his career. Later he came to play the Tennis Masters Cup in Lisbon as world number one and he already has two Grand Slam titles and a Davis Cup on his resume - after loosing Estoril Open final in 2004 in three sets and in the meantime won the Australian Open, we will see if it's this time he will win the tournament and ad it to his resume"

With 26 years old, Marat Safin is endowed with a sudden tennis and presents a resume with some extra-porting prominences. Already elected as 'One of the 50 More Intriguing People of the Circuit', was nominated 'Favourite Player' of the men professional circuit in a sounding in the official's ATP site and is also one of the favourites of the press and critics, not only due to its mixture of supersonic power and innate ability, but also for its witty caracter.

With 1.94 m high and 89 kg, the Moscovite colossus present a resume that includes 15 trophies in 25 finals (having played four finals in Grand Slam tournaments: he won the US Open in 2000 and the Australian Open in 2005; he lost the decision of the Australian Open in 2002 and 2004). He already swam with dolphins in the Miami Seaquarium and likes to remember his visit to the Hugh Heffner mansion, the boss of Playboy. Beyond his smashed racquets record (he made an average of 50 per year...) and the reputation of terror of the courts, he also achieved reputation of bon-vivant surrounded by beautiful girls already assigned as 'Safinetes' - he affirms that these times of playboy were left behind.

After more than half year struggling with a serious problem in his knee, the temperamental Russian is back to the circuit and already proved his level in the last weeks defeating for two times world number 5 and his compatriot Nikolay Davydenko.
