The usual "I-don't-agree-but-it's-fun-to-read-it-anyway" preview by Steve Tignor:
Then, In Rome: Preview Posted 05/05/2007 @ 7 :34 PM First Quarter Well, it’s time we saw what Roger Federer is going to bring to this clay season. We’re closing in on the French Open: Is he getting better, or does he still lack that ultimate confidence that he’s the man to beat? He has a potential second-round test in Nicolas Almagro, the eternally flashy and underachieving Spaniard. He won Valencia a couple weeks ago, he took Federer to three sets here last year, and he’s a guy I’ve always thought would do something big at some point. I’ve always been wrong, but this is another chance. After that, we may get the Federer-Baby Federer match-up I wanted to see in Monte Carlo. That, obviously, is another serious test, as Gasquet has beaten him on clay before and is in the final in Estoril today. First-rounder to watch: Gasquet vs. Fernando Verdasco. These guys took turns giving their match back to each other in Monte Carlo a couple weeks ago, and the Frenchman will be tired after his final-round appearance Sunday. Semifinalist: Roger Federer
Second Quarter This may be Andy Roddick’s best shot at a clay Masters semifinal. He’s got the winner of Fish-Gaudio first, then perhaps David Ferrer or Igor Andreev, and the bottom of the section features two guys Roddick has winning records against, Fernando Gonzalez and James Blake. But isn’t it time for Gonzo to get back on track? What happened to the Stefanki magic? It can't be gone already. First-rounder to watch: Blake vs. Gael Monfils. They played a spectacular back-and-forth five-setter in Paris last year. Semifinalist: Fernando Gonzalez
Third Quarter Robredo-Davydenko seems to have replaced the eternal Nalbandian-Ljubicic quarter as the new throwaway section of the draw. Even if those guys don’t grab you, we do have Andy Murray in the top half, a potential meeting between Marat Safin and Davydenko at the bottom, and a semi-resurgent J.C. Ferrero lurking. First-rounder to watch: Murray vs. Gilles Simon, a match-up of counterpunchers. The French soft-baller has a game that could drive Murray nuts. Semifinalist: Nikolay Davydenko
Fourth Quarter Here it gets interesting again. Rafael Nadal puts his clay streak on the line, potentially against two guys who have beaten him the last time they’ve played: Mikhail Youzhny and Novak Djokovic. But neither beat Nadal on clay, and after making the final last week, it would be a tall order to ask Djoko to take down Nadal at the end of this one. Potential second-rounder to watch: Nadal vs. Daniele Bracciali, a hometown favorite who the crowd will get fully behind. Which will probably just make Nadal play better. Semifinalist: Rafael Nadal

Results for today so far : Singles First round Almagro (ESP) d. Henman (GBR) 75 61 (16) Ferrero (ESP) d. Hrbaty (SVK) 36 61 64 Tursunov (RUS) d. Bjorkman (SWE) 76 (10) 36 61 Acasuso (ARG) d. Verkerk (NED) 63 75 Doubles First round Moya/Nadal (ESP) d. Federer/Wawrinka (SUI) 64 76 (5) News from the official site: 07/05/2007 18:01 RAIN STOPS PLAY The players are off while thunder storms pass. On court one, Andy Murray looked half asleep in his first set, hitting a host of unforced errors. He came back strongly in the second however using drop shots and lobs to entertaining effect against his French opponent Gilles Simon, taking the set 61 before the rain struck. It's one set all too on centre court between former world number one Lleyton hewitt and Oscar Hernandez. Hewitt looked fored up in the first, taking it 63 but let the errors creep in in the second. The two men exchanged breaks before the Spaniard took it on a tie-break. It has been a bad-tempered match, with the Australian and the umpire arguing eye-to-eye at one point over a disputed call. Hewitt earned himself a warning for unsportsman-like conduct.

Ciao a tutti! I mentioned this in the TGFR member tournament thread so sorry if it is a bit off topic...but I am studying in Rome right now and have my last final exam tomorrow from 10-1, just in time to se Marat. Boy am I happy it rained today to postpone his match! And he is followed by Roger? How awesome would that be to see both of them? Only problem is...I'm not sure if they are sold out and the website says the ticket office is only open from 10-1 and then 2-5 and it is too late to order tickets online. Can you still buy tickets for the day session after it has started? If anybody knows can you send me a message ASAP? Also Blake, Haas, and Baghdatis are all playing on a different courts at the same time...does anyone know if I would just use a ground pass to go to those courts? In a nut shell, I am a bit confused by the way the tickets work and I'd be forever grateful if anyone has any advice, grazie mille!
