I have just come from Kooyong and I must say I don't think I have seen Marat play that well in quite a while. No stress at loosing the first set and pretty much cruised thru the other sets. He looked good [of course] and served well and whether it be luck or pure skill, his shot placement was spot on. Even handled the scorching heat well. I'll keep tapping away on my laptop and have some sort of report for you soon ;D ps Andy was in fine form too. I think he will be a force to be reckoned with at the AO

If popularity goes by how many police you have escorting your from the court to the clubhouse or v.v., Roger and Marat win hands down ;D

CONGRATS, MARAT, well done!!!!!! I'm glad to be kept informed about Marat by our very own "reporters". Thanks ladies, you are doing a great job! ;D What about all the other players, though? Does anyone know why Gonzalez is playing today? Who dropped out? It is so hard to get information about this damn exhibition, even their own website sucks!

Nalby withdrew due to a knee injury. I posted the little report under the Argentine players thread...perhaps I should post it here as well:
Knee injury forces Nalbandian out of Kooyong Classic
MELBOURNE, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Argentine David Nalbandian withdrew from the invitational Kooyong Classic on Wednesday because of a knee injury, organisers said.
The world number eight arrived in Melbourne with a niggling knee injury and pulled out from the remainder of the tournament after losing his opening match 5-7 6-1 6-2 to Russia's Marat Safin.
This is the second year in succession that Nalbandian has had to cut short his stay in Kooyong. He retired with an upset stomach during his first match in 2006.
Organisers were unable to confirm whether Nalbandian still intended to compete at the Australian Open, which begins on Monday.
His place in the Kooyong draw has been taken by Chile's Fernando Gonzalez, the world number 10.

MARAT SAFIN
- - - - - - - - - -
Q. How did you rate that first match of the year?
A. Quite well. It was a little bit strange feeling because I've
been practising on the inside courts at Rod Laver, and
the weather was kind of a little bit too windy for me today, the
first set, and then I got used to it a little bit and started to
play better. I'm satisfied with the way I'm moving, the way I'm
playing, so hopefully it will only get better.
Q. Physically, are you feeling good after not having much of a break
in the off season?
A. Yeah, it's okay. I will play this year a little bit less than
last year, so I have to use the opportunities when I have been
playing. And I finished the year quite late. I used all the
matches I have been playing in the past three months to my
advantage, in order to play well here, so I have a lot of matches
behind my back, so hopefully it will help me.
Q. You usually play well in January. Why do you think that is?
A. I kind of like the surface, because it's really fast, a pretty
high bounce. I always played well at the end of the season, and
also it gives me some confidence for the beginning of the year.
Q. In terms of how warm it was out there today, is that an ideal
AAMI Classic 10/01/2007 1 SAFIN
preparation? Do you need that to get ready for the next two
weeks, in terms of how hot it was outside?
A. Today, the first two games was a little bit tough, but then you
start to get used to it. The body started to warm up pretty
fast, but then it was okay. I don't really sweat a lot. It's
hot but it's not humid, so it's kind of easy to play in such
weather.
Q. How good is it to be back?
A. Quite good to be healthy.
Q. Do you enjoy Australia?
A. Yes, of course. I missed last year and, like I said before,
I used to play really well here, and I missed last year. And
then, after Australia, normally I get my confidence back and
I start to play much better. And then towards the end of the
season I start to play just my -- all the points I start to get
after August, and then finishing after Australia, normally
I don't win a lot of matches, but at least this gives me the
opportunity to take a lot of points and then not be running
around and playing in small tournaments to get the points. So
it's kind of a big jump for me, this tournament, and I missed it
not to be here last year.
Q. Your rematch with Roger Federer tomorrow, bearing in mind what a
classic match you had in 2005, how do you feel about it?
A. It took me by surprise, I didn't know I had to play against him
tomorrow. I think it's going to be great, a great match, great
AAMI Classic 10/01/2007 2 SAFIN
preparation, and hopefully I will enjoy it.
Q. Do you expect to play him in the Australian Open?
A. Well, it's a long way to go, and I hope I can make a good match
tomorrow. And then I will see what situation he's in right now
and where I am.
