Greyhounds? Excellent. Woof woof. www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,21035669-2722,00.html Returns hard to pinpoint from those called on to serve Chip Le Grand looks at a profession where one size does not fit all -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- January 10, 2007 ACCORDING to Marat Safin, finding a tennis coach is little different from picking a mail-order bride. "I offered him a few trips, a little bit of cash," he said of his new mentor Alexander Volkov. "You know, full hospitality." ... And another article: sport.guardian.co.uk/breakingnews/feedstory/0,,-6332487,00.html Safin looking to make up for lost time By Pritha Sarkar MELBOURNE, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Marat Safin is determined to make up for lost time after missing the chance to defend his Australian Open title 12 months ago. Instead of prowling the courts at Melbourne Park, the moody Russian was hobbling about in Europe nursing a knee injury ... PS A mail order bride? Think we'll get an invite to the wedding? I'll bring the greyhounds.

Now,that would be interesting...If Marat offered you to take a few trips with him...and some cash ... Would be hard to resist, wouldn't it? The question would be-What the hell he's tripping about when he has to pay for it and if you would accept-what would that turn you into? Please, don't develope the subject in this thread

Thanks Marie! ;D Tennis Week 09jan07 Safin Set To Start Australian SwingPhoto By Susan Mullane By Richard Pagliaro A new-look Marat Safin showed up in for the AAMI Classic exhibition press conference in Kooyong today clad in camouflage pants and a close-cropped haircut. When the Australian Open starts on Jan. 15, Safin will seek to imprint his familiar power-based baseline style on the tournament where he’s enjoyed his greatest Grand Slam success. "I think Safin certainly is a factor [for the Australian Open]," U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe, who leaves New York on Friday to cover the Melbourne major for ESPN, told Tennis Week today. "He likes it down there and he obviously finished last year strong in helping Russia win the Davis Cup. I think that was huge for him and his confidence and he’s certainly a guy who can be a threat at the Australian. He has been in the past." The 2005 Australian Open champion sat out the 2006 Melbourne major while recovering from ligament damage to his left knee, but when he has been healthy, he’s played some of his best tennis Down Under. Safin has reached the Australian Open final in three of his last four appearances, falling to Thomas Johansson in a final played on his 22nd birthday in 2002 and bowing to Roger Federer in the 2004 final. Safin snapped World No. 1 Federer's 26-match winning streak in the 2005 Australian Open semifinals in a clash that began as a birthday rematch and concluded as a career rebirth. Safin celebrated his 25th birthday in sensational style, saving a match point to topple the top-seeded Swiss, 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(6), 9-7 in a shot-making spectacle that remains one of the highest-quality major matches in recent years. Safin defeated Lleyton Hewitt, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, in the 2005 final to claim his second career major. Though the 26th-ranked Safin has not won a tournament title since that 2005 final he remains one of the few players capable of dethroning defending champion Federer on the Rebound Ace. The pair are both playing in the eight-man Kooyong field this week; Safin opens tomorrow against David Nalbandian and Federer faces Radek Stepanek. While rebuilding his ranking during the 2006 season, Safin beat six top-10 players, including a victory over Nalbandian in the second round of the U.S. Open, yet he remains in the midst of one the longest title droughts of his career. Though there is speculation that the knee injury has sapped a half- step of Safin’s speed, McEnroe, whose team lost to Russia in the Davis Cup semifinals staged on red clay in Moscow in September, said Safin’s movement may have been compromised by indecision rather than his knee. "I think he's fine," McEnroe said. "I think he may have lost a little something when he first came back last year, but a lot of times that’s something, as Andre Agassi used to say, that happens when you’re not as confident. You don’t see players move as well when they’re not as confident on the court. When you’re confident, you’re more decisive in your movement. And it’s not like he’s a [Lleyton] Hewitt or [Rafael] Nadal who relies so much on his movement. He’s more of a preparation and power guy. So I don’t buy that entirely. I saw him play in Davis Cup and he was fine." Safin's strokes are so forceful and his serve is usually so steady that if he can tame two of his typically toughest opponents — his emotions and his metnal game — he is capable playing high-percentage crosscourt shots and controlling the rallies against most top players. "There’s no reason, to me, he can’t play well and be a threat in Australia," McEnroe said. "He’s still pretty young and if he's done the off-court work then he can certainly be a factor." www.sportsmediainc.net/tennisweek/index.cfm?func=showarticle&newsid=16392&bannerregion=

ooo this new year bodes well for our dear Marat. ;D he looks and seems to be fit as a fiddle.HOT too but then again, when was he never hot.. BTW,i hate the RR system too..I think the players might like it cause they get more chance to play but I think they should stick to the traditional knock-out system..
