Safin makes winning start to French Open quest 2005-05-24 11:56:40 GMT (Reuters) Nobody has done it since American Jim Courier in 1992. The other two to have achieved the feat are Australian Rod Laver, en route to the grand slam in 1969, and Swede Mats Wilander in 1988. I hope this is a good omen for Marat, Courier been a fan and Mats a friend................

Henin-Hardenne, Safin battle through By Araz Gulekjian Tuesday, May 24, 2005 Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne and Russian Marat Safin's assault on the Roland Garros crown began with a few bumps on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old Belgian standout and the 25-year-old Russian withstood stiff challenges on the Parisian clay before scraping into round two of the second Grand Slam of the year.
No10 seed Henin-Hardenne fended off a late surge from Spanish veteran Conchita Martinez before prevailing 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 after a gruelling two hour and 15 minute battle to extend her winning streak to 18 matches.
Minutes later, Safin, the No3 seed, followed on her footsteps, breaking down the resistance of unheralded Dutchman Raemon Sluiter en route to a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Right from the helm, Henin-Hardenne, who captured the Parisian title in 2003, displayed brilliant court stewardship, controlling the rallies with a near flawless game of superior shotmaking.
Martinez, a runner-up here in 2000, was making her 18th and final appearance at Roland Garros, and she initially had no answer to the exceptional clay court savvy of her opponent.
Henin-Hardenne broke her three times and galloped away with the first set in just 22 minutes.
The second set appeared to be a formality for the Belgian as she broke Martinez in an unending first game. But the veteran at least found her range and broke back to lead 3-1.
Her revival was short-lived as she handed the break right back. Henin-Hardenne reeled off two straight games to even it out but her nerves did her in as she conceded her serve, and the second set, in the 10th game after four straight unforced errors.
In the decider, the 12th-ranked Belgian never regained her stellar form of the opening set, but she still found the resources to restore order and cut down on her dismal number of unforced errors to go 5-1 up. Martinez, 45th in the world, crawled back into the match and staved off two match points before conceding defeat in the 10th game.
As for Safin, he was also tested on Court Suzanne Lenglen. The erratic Russian blew hot and cold, at times blasting winners at will, at others spraying balls all over the court.
Safin, who has been struggling on tour since his remarkable Australian Open exploits, took command of the match and raced ahead 6-1 and 2-0.
