Safin falls as Russia are beaten
Marat Safin suffered a surprise defeat in his opening match of the year as Russia went down 2-1 to Germany at the Hopman Cup in Perth. Tommy Haas beat Safin 6-3 3-6 6-1 to level after Ana Myskina had earlier defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3 6-3.
Haas and Groenefeld came through the doubles in a super tiebreaker against Myskina and Safin, 7-5 1-6 10-6.
shame i hope it was just match rust as i was very surprised to hear the score .
hopefully he will be back against argentina as that match is crucially vital

Well, I won't get into it really. No he didn' t tank, he just didn't bother or wasn't bothered, whatever.... Haas was playing very well. Marat's initial pressure didn't get to him so Marat kinda lost attention for 1 of his service games and lost the 1st set. He was better in the 2nd where Haas made more mistakes so he got the 2nd set but WTF was he doing in the 3rd? No match stats up yet but the most important I saw at the end - BP conversion Marat 1/3, Tommy 3/4! He didn't use the chances he had AGAIN!!!!!! And like there were many chances vs Haas to begin with! Some good volleying that gives hope though. FH wasn't working most of the time. And one thing that bothered me, Haas came up with some great passing shots DTL at the end of the 2nd set and Marat was just disappointed, I would have applauded to Haas on a couple of occasions actually, like Roddick does, so in this I must give credit to Andy, I've seen Andy applauding to the opponents' shots a lot, and I haven't seen Marat do it for like.... seems forever. Actually Marat didn't learn from the mistakes when he rushed to the net and let Haas pass him, sure it frustrated him but.... It would be nice to give credit to your opponent too sometimes. I am beginning to understand the critics who say he never gives credit to his opponets. I wouldn't say he NEVER gives credit but yeah, I detect a pattern here with the players ranked lower than him... Easy to praise JesusFed of course! But the guys ranked lower than you can play exceptionally well too on a day, ya know! And when you're not bothered.... Wonder, wonder, they DEFEAT you! He looked OK, shaven and tanned, he had the golden chain with the ring Dinara gave him on again in addition to the last year's golden chain and the amulet - so with 3 things ard his neck isn't it a bit too heavy? And like..... erm, won't say any inappropriate words here.... I'm off now.

6/10?! huh? how in the world do you get a 6/10 score in tennis? Nicki, it's called the Champions TB or a supertiebreak or smth like that, played not to 7 with 2 pts diff but to 10 with 2 pts diff. They play it instead of the decisive (3rd) set in not THAT official, i.e. non-ATP tourneys like at veterans tourneys, Hopman Cup obviously... Mark P. and Molik won the Slovaks 11-9 yesterday in the Champions TB. I hope it helped.

I didn't get to see the mixed doubles match, sadly. I wasn't angry after the singles match, but now I learnt that the doubles was lost I'm getting.... I agree with Maria, about not being bothered. He looked as if he didn't sleep for two night in the first set and wasn't realy into the match in the first and last sets. He didn't wake up in tyhe first set and oafed in the third. Anyway, I would have given a lot to see him frustrated in the match: he lost points and just 'calmly' turned around walking away. I wouldn't agree with Maria, about the forehand. The number of HB and FH errors was EQUAL. The number of FH winners was way above the number of BH winners. I saw many FHs down the line, while he miised BH dtl (I remember him doing attempting only a FEW of them in the first set, losing them all). In fact, I got the impression that the only BH winners he had were from volleys. He had good cross-court BHs, though. Anyway, I'm not too worried. He played very well in the second set, so he wasn't rusty. I guess it was mostly a mental thing. I"m hoping that after he has some sleep, and cares about the upcomming matches a bit more, he'll play realy well.

Vass, it was the 1st impression about the FH, esp the 1st set I guess, then he missed more FHs. And yeah, I saw the missed BH DTL he oafed. It was sooooo funny actually. Glad you're not worried, I'm not too worried either. If he'll lose to Davide I'll be worried.

And ppl, is there an email address (at his management or somewhere) so I can send him a message that 3 thingies ard your neck is a tad too much for a man (he says he's such a MAAAAN, not a metrosexual)? Anyone can tell him that? They looked HORRIBLE!!! Messy and way too much! Don't think any other tennis player is wearing so many thingies ard the neck.
