And if you want ALL the details - his right ankle was taped under thes socks so he still sprained it a bit vs Horna (when he fell) or even before, don't remember exactly now but wasn't there something? Maybe this influenced his movement at the beginning? And after the 2nd set he called the trainer and let to cover a blister under his sole (?) near the big toe. Nothing serious though!

Maria>>>> Big thank you for the match report I know its late and you must be tired, so thanks for posting. Its hard when you only have the SB to know what is really going on, so, unaware that Marat was getting so upset and losing his temper. Thank god he was able to pull himself together and win this match. It goes to show that he really can do it if he wants to and puts his mind to it. Must be? LOL.......whats so wrong in knowing anyway she will be in Houston

Congrats Marat! And thanks for the report Maria So good to see his exit in SPOpen hasn't damaged his overall winning streak. I really do think Peter has done the impossible and actually brought some 'sanity' to the crazy oncourt mental world of Marat Safin ;D Wonder how far he's gonna go this time...? Paris seems to be Marat's personal kingdom ;D He owns Bercy, baby!! (BTW, I was told 'definitely wasn't Dasha behind Walt' for those who need to know ) I was told this morning by friends that 'Marat is doing fine' right now, so that's good to hear Seems he's quite optimistic too. Apart from that, I've nothing 'official' to report at the mo *sorry* But I'll keep my ear to the ground as always ;D

Safin grinds out nervy Bercy win
Temperamental live-wire Marat Safin eventually came through what was deemed as a pretty rudimental game against Ivan Ljubicic at the Paris masters in Bercy. The invariably moody and disgruntled Russian lost a first set tie-break before overcoming his adversary 6-7 6-3 7-5 in a tight and tense clash.
Marat Safin was clearly put out by the fight put up by the plucky Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, and after both players failed to even obtain break points in the first set, it was the Croat who romped the tie-break 7-1.
The highly-strung Russian was broken straight away in the second, leading him to vent his anger towards the match umpire.
Having being warned for cursing aloud in his native tongue Safin approached the chair, before uttering a classy tirade boasting such gems as "I am starting to lose respect for you" and "What's the problem? Nobody can understand Russian here!"
The hot-headed talent quickly regained his composure, though, winning the set 6-3 with out much further ado, (apart from a racket thrown into the net at top-speed, somewhat scaring the nearby ball-boy).
The third set was a true duel of chess-like tennis, with both players holding serve until Safin found the break-through when at 5-5.
The game was wrapped up by a reinvigorated Safin, once again sure of his clear - yet so often fleeting - abilities.
The game shouldn't have taken the Russian so long, but it was a pleasure for the Parisien crowd, who were treated to some fine tennis and, above all, the entertaining histrionics that is but part and parcel of any game involving the enigmatic Russian.
Safin, who took the Madrid Masters last month, is bidding for his first triple victory in the same tournament this week.

Roddick, Safin post triumphs
Paris - 03/11/04
US top-seed Andy Roddick and Russian sixth-seed Marat Safin scored victories on Wednesday to book passage into round three of the BNP Paribas Masters.
The 22-year-old American mercilessly dumped Armenian veteran Sargis Sargsian 6/2, 6/2 in 51 minutes while Safin escaped defeat by the skin of his teeth. Down a set and 2-0, the 24-year-old Russian rallied for a 6/7 (1), 6/3, 7/5 come-from-behind victory.
Roddick, who was returning to action here in Paris after a month of inactivity, was hardly tested. He kept pounding blistering winners (18) and committed nine unforced errors to Sargsian's 21.
The 31-year-old Armenian veteran kept guessing throughout the entire contest, couldn't establish any form of consistency and unravelled under the might of Roddick's ferocious forehands assaults. Roddick will now square off with either Fernando Gonzales or Max Mirnyi.
Earlier on Wednesday, Russian giant Marat Safin had his back against the wall.
The Croatian often frustrated the Russian with his big serves. Down a set and 2-0, Safin's chances of a recovery seemed very slim. But the Russian hung tough, found the right length on his groundstrokes and executed solid volleys at times to earn a hard-fought victory.
"I didn't really play well. I struggled during the whole match. Each time I play him, I don't enjoy playing tennis," said Safin, who crancked 13 aces to Ljubicic's 17, hammered 39 winners and made 12 of his 14 net approach shots.
"He is a difficult player to play against. He can play from the baseline, can volley and most importantly he serves well," he added.
The 7-ranked Safin, a two-time winner here in Paris (2000 and 2002), said his change of tactics riled his opponent.
"He could have finished me in straight set," Safin said. "But I changed a little bit of tacticts and started returning his serve a little better. Just fighting."
His foe in the third round will be Austrian Jurgen Melzer, who battled himself into the next round with a 6/3, 3/6, 6/1 victory on Wedsneday over No10 seed Tommy Robredo.

hey teresa! join us on msn next time! we USUALLY have live coverage somewhere during TMSes...and if none of us do, at least we can agonise together. misery loooovvvveeesss company. question of te day: to crawl up at 3.30am or not to? sigh..... next. match report. i agree with maria. the first set was soooo sluggish and a total bleagh. it was AWFUL to watch. i was getting so pissed off. 2nd set, kudos to him for not losing his head and actually managing to regroup and refocus after being 0-2 down. not his bestn tennis cos ljubicic was making errors left right and centre. and i was having fun reporting the number of times the ball got netted (steph was amused) argued with the umpire all through. mwahaha. (i'm not sure whether he shook hands with the ump at the end. maria. did u notice?) yeah. so he managed to regroup. and peter was looking very worried. late in the 2nd set and in the 3rd set, marat wasn't so sluggish anymore and the looooonnnnggg rallies were getting more exciting. before, they were just borrrriiinnnggg. almost like they were warming up or practising. then 3rd set was pretty good. and erm...oh yeah. when he broke to go 6-5 up, that was THE MOST agonising moment of the match. marat had 2 BPS. almost blew them both. luckily...he held his nerve. and he WON!!! oh...marat should go kiss that net. the number of times it saved him last night. phew! 95% of Ivan's UEs were from netting the ball. haha... and to wrap things up... CONGRATULATIONS IVAN ON YOUR UPCOMING WEDDING ON MONDAY!!!!!!!! his fiancee was looking so agonised in the last set. poor gal. ah well... more time for u giuys to prepare for the big day then

okiiiieee. more from paris site
Safin will play less tournaments in 2005 In order to privilege quality to quantity, Marat Safin is planning to play less tournaments in 2005. The Russian who will have competed in 27 events this year, including two Davis Cup ties, the Olympics and the ATP Masters Cup in Houston has agreed so with his coach Peter Lundgren. "Playing too much can affect his results in the major events" said Lundgren who will pursue his collaboration with the Russian champion. Safin will start the year in Perth for the Hopman Cup, as he did this year. After a week off, he will play the Australian Open. Then, the only event he plans on competing in, before the Masters series of Indian Wells and Miami, is Dubaï.<br>
