Guga Launches Own Line of On- and Off-Court Clothing Brazilian tennis star Gustavo Kuerten has launched his own fashion brand and store in his hometown of Florianopolis. The popular three time French Open champion will now be wearing the clothes of his own brand when he steps on court to compete on the ATP circuit again, next year. “I think that since my first win in Roland Garros, in '97, with the colorful clothes, the headbands and my ever changing hair style and colors that I wear, my looks kinda became a trademark. Just like in tennis, what I am trying to do with this brand is to show something of the best quality possible, looking for perfection and always trying to surprise and show something new, different,” said Kuerten, whose clothes collection isn’t limited to his uniforms. The Guga Kuerten line includes surfwear, streetwear, beachwear, a more traditional series with polo shirts and even jeans, in a more classic style, called Mr. Kuerten. For the women, at the moment, when summer time is coming up in Brazil, there is a whole line of beachwear. Guga’s fans will now be able to dress just like him and buy all his apparel at the same place. Head racquets, with whom Guga has had a partnership since he was 16, will also be on sale at his store. With a café, lounge, book and musicshop, surf boards on sale too, the Guga Kuerten store located right on the center of Florianopolis, promises to be a hit. Top Brazilian designer, Jum Nakao, known to have done the most spectacular fashion show in the past 10 years at the Sao Paulo fashion week, signs the collection.

Kuerten starts the 2006 season in Viña del Mar, and then Davis Cup (Peru), Buenos Aires, Brasil and Acapulco. With big plans to expand the brand and store, the Guga Kuerten collection will be on sale around the country, at multibrand stores from February on, and by the end of 2006 they intend have stores in São Paulo and Rio. There are also plans to take the brand abroad. At the moment, Guga’s complete uniform and collection can be found at the Guga Kuerten store (Rua Bocaiuva, on the corner of Rafael Bandeira, Florianopolis, SC). “I am very happy seeing all this project ready. We have been working on it for a while and now it is happening. But I don’t want people to think that I am already starting something outside of tennis, just becauses I haven’t been competing. I am working very hard with my coach (Hernan Gumy) and this only gives me extra motivation to compete. I wanna go back to the tour, play with my clothes, I have good hopes that 2006 can be a good year and that the years after this one, can be even better.”

He's at it again Vogue RG Devotes 23 Pages to Cover Boy Kuerten Three time Roland Garros champion Gustavo Kuerten is on newsstands throughout Brazil on the cover of the December issue of VOGUE RG Brazil. Guga, who is playing the Copa Argentina this week, in Buenos Aires, in preparation for the 2006 season, recently launched his own fashion brand and store (Guga Kuerten). On the eve of the launch, Guga spent two days shooting for VOGUE, one in a studio, in São Paulo and another one at one of his favorite beaches, in Florianopolis, Praia Brava. “For me it was a first-time experience, taking pictures with my own clothes," Kuerten said. "It was different, very tiring – almost eight hours in the studio, but also fun and I enjoyed it. I hardly do this kind of stuff, because it takes a lot of time and I am always practicing and busy with my tennis. But when I was approached by VOGUE, I thought about it and I knew they were going to do something special and the result is really amazing.” “Guga Kuerten, the genious of the courts invests in fashion and becomes a brand owner,” says the cover. Inside, the magazine dedicated 23 pages to the star, including an interview and words of praise from sports great, Pelé and tennis legend Thomaz Koch. “I met Guga when I was the Minister of Sports. I already admired him a lot as an athlete and from then on I started admiring the person much more,” says Pelé.

Kuerten sees retirement looming
Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten says he will retire at the end of the season if his form fails to improve. A three time winner of the French Open, Kuerten, has struggled to come back from a succession of injuries.
Currently playing doubles for Brazil in the Davis Cup tie with Peru, the former world number one has slipped to 300 in the rankings.
"I am 29 and if by the end of the season I haven't rediscovered my top form, I will stop playing," he said.
