time for another fun event .... ;D Federer, Borg to team up for doubles event in Nov. 7/29/2008 11:38:00 AM MACAU (AP) -Roger Federer and Bjorn Borg will team up for a special doubles event in November, possibly against the men who ended their famous Wimbledon streaks. Federer and Borg will face John McEnroe and either Rafael Nadal or James Blake at The Venetian Macau Tennis Showdown on Nov. 20 in a Tour of Champions event. Federer and Borg each won five consecutive Wimbledon singles titles. Nadal ended Federer's run in an epic five-set match this month and McEnroe snapped Borg's streak in 1981. McEnroe's partner will come from the country that loses the Davis Cup semifinal between the U.S. and Spain in September. The showdown will start with a one-set match between Borg and McEnroe, followed by a best-of-three sets between Federer and Nadal or Blake. The two-set doubles match will be decided by a 10-point tiebreaker, if necessary.

Federer to carry Swiss flag at opening ceremonies BERN, Switzerland (AP) -- Roger Federer will carry the Swiss flag at the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. The top-ranked tennis player will celebrate his 27th birthday next Friday by being his country's standard bearer for the second straight Olympics. "It's wonderful that I can carry the flag for the Swiss delegation on my birthday," Federer said in a statement released Friday on the Swiss Olympic Web site. Federer has struggled with his form this year, and was upset again on Thursday, losing to Ivo Karlovic in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters. He now risks losing his No. 1 ranking after 235 weeks to Rafael Nadal if the Spaniard wins the Cincinnati tournament. Nadal beat Federer in both the French Open and Wimbledon finals this year. Still, winning an Olympic gold medal could help salvage what has been a disappointing year for Federer, in which he has failed to add to his 12 Grand Slam singles titles. "I still have a score to settle with the Olympics and being handed this honor for a second time will give me extra motivation," he said. Federer was the top seed at Athens four years ago but lost in the second round to Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

Thanks for the article, Annette! Well, one thing is sure - if Federer bothered to read the press, especially after his matches with Rafa, then he surely wouldn't need advice from a coach lol It's true that some things are recurring - I remember reading about Nadal consistently serving to Fed's backhand in the 2008 RG final and Federer not trying to run around it and hit a forehand, and here it was again, one of the pbs (at least seemingly) in the Australian Open final. But still, re the coach suggestion - didn't Fed hire Higueras to get help for RG? It seems that the coach did not help much in that case...We've said it I guess quite a few times wrt Marat, you really can't teach the old dog how to sit, so I'd be really really surprised if Fed now changed tactics and really the approach to his tennis as a whole: his tennis was always more of a family business - I guess he hired the minimum number of people he could hire and tried to manage everything more or less by himself, and with some mum and Mirka help as it seems. One thing that no one other than Fed himself might be able to grasp is the mental factor for Fed playing Nadal - he lost so very many times to Rafa - especially if you comapare his record against Rafa with his reacord against any other player - that this has to be a major factor! Clay apart, I'm not sure the answer is in the tactics against Nadal for Fed but in the way he is competing against Rafa.Tacticly, he did try to play on Nadal's backhand more this time (or at least I though so), but Rafa's backhand was almost as good as the forehand, but on the other hand he did not manage to convert enough of the zillion break points he got, he lost both the 1st and 3rd set playing a poor game and a poor tiebreak respectivelly and really did not give himself a chance in the 5th. Also, there was so much more at steak in this particular final for Fed than it was for Nadal, so that must have added to the nerves - Fed's nerves, that is . In conclusion - all credit to Rafa . He just plays better and better and is the toughest competitor, as he always was. He did manage to win the final in 5 after he won the semi in 5. And was also a gratious winner, especially under the teary circumstances - very well done to him! P.S. I wrote almost as much as Bodo )

Federer To Become A Father For First Time Roger Federer and his long-time girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec announced on Thursday that they are expecting their first child this summer. "I have some really awesome news to share with all of you," the 27-year-old Swiss told his official website. "Mirka and I are excited to let you know that we will be parents this summer! Mirka is pregnant and we are so happy to be starting a family." Federer, currently No. 2 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, is competing at an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Indian Wells, California. "This is a dream come true for us," said the 13-time Grand Slam champion. "We love children and we are looking forward to being parents for the first time. Mirka is feeling great and everything is going well." The couple met when they were both competitors at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Vavrinec reached a career-high No. 76 in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Rankings (Sept. 10, 2001). www.atpworldtour.com/tennis/1/en/news/newsarticle_2518.asp

Fatherhood Won't Affect Focus Expectant father Roger Federer believes impending parenthood will not affect his chances of breaking Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles. The Swiss world number two revealed earlier this week that his girlfriend Mirka Vavrinec was in the early stages of pregnancy with their first child. "I think it's not going to really disturb my mindset on tennis a whole lot," said Federer, who has won 13 Grand Slams to stand one behind American Sampras on the all-time list. "I've always made sure that my schedule is (to) get away from tennis a little bit and then come back when I'm ready to play again. That's why I didn't play for the last five to six weeks. "I think it's going to be pretty much the same. I don't really have to adjust a whole lot. If it does something to me, I think it's going to motivate me to play for a long time." Federer would not be drawn on when exactly the baby was due, other than to say it would be sometime in the (northern hemisphere) summer. "I'm completely excited. I've been thinking about something like this happening for the last two or three years," he added. "So for me, this is not a massive shock. But when it does happen (that) your girlfriend (or) wife is pregnant, it definitely changes your mindset. "All of a sudden you're hoping everything goes well, whereas before you're just joking about it. From this respect, I'm excited that the baby comes out healthy and everything ges okay. "Other than that, it's just happiness. And everybody around me, all the people I talk to, everybody is like, 'Wow, it's such great news.' It's a nice time." BIG CONGRATULATIONS! a little smurf is on the way Not a lot of pressure having Fedex as your dad!

Awww, so happy for both of them. He'll never be able to stop crying! Jeez, if the wean is possibly due in the Wimbledon fortnight, it's not gonna be the best preparation for him. Hope Mirka's waters don't break at a key moment ... ie match point in a crucial match ...
