Sharapova beats Petrova to win Generali Ladies October 29, 2006
AP - Oct 29, 9:51 am EST
LINZ, Austria (AP) -- Maria Sharapova won her fifth title of the season Sunday, beating defending champion Nadia Petrova 7-5, 6-2 in the Generali Ladies final and advancing to No. 2 in the rankings.
Sharapova has won 16 straight matches and has not lost since before the start of her successful run to the U.S. Open title.
[glow=red,2,300]The top-seeded Russian overtook Justine Henin-Hardenne in the rankings and now trails only Amelie Mauresmo. Sharapova needs to win the season-ending WTA Championship in Madrid, Spain, to finish on top. [/glow]
"It is my dream to end the year on the No. 1 spot again," Sharapova said.
Petrova, seeded second, won her first career title in Linz last year.
"I am so disappointed," the Russian said. "I really got my chances in the first set. But after missing them, I just did not play up to my usual standards anymore."
Sharapova dominated from the start, breaking serve in the first game. But at 4-3 she double-faulted and lost her serve. Sharapova then saved two set points and later held serve and broke before serving out the set.
In the first game of the second set, Petrova lost serve again. She then had few chances against Sharapova's strong serve.
"I started very well, but got a bit tired towards the end of the first set," Sharapova said. "Saving the two set points gave me a huge boost. I always play my best tennis when under pressure."
Congrats Maria ;D ;D ;D ;D

Congrats to Maria.
I heard that she's playing the Fed Cup in 2007. Can anyone confirm that? How the other girls will react to her presence? They don't seem to like her...

Sharapova and Petrova to play for Russia Maria Sharapova will make her long-awaited Fed Cup by BNP Paribas debut in the 2007 first round tie against Spain, April 21-22. She will be joined in a very strong line-up by Nadia Petrova, as well as Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva, so Spain will face a tough task to reach the semifinals.
"Yes, all four of our girls have agreed to play against Spain," president of the Russian tennis federation Shamil Tarpishchev, who is also their Fed Cup captain, told Reuters.
"Of course, anything can happen between now and next April but barring any injuries, they all will be in the team."
so yeah its confirmed..I dont know how the other girls are going to act..especially Nastya if she's playing but I'm sure she's not the type to hold a grudge

Maria (and some really fancy colleagues) in Hong Kong She'd be a lot more beautiful and natural with the clothes and identity of a 19 year-old. Marat should teach her a thing or two about staying on your line.

Tennis star named UN ambassador Ms Sharapova said she was delighted with her new role Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova has been named as a goodwill ambassador for the UN development agency, UNDP. The 19-year-old will focus on projects dealing with the aftermath of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Signed on for a symbolic $1 (51 pence) the world's top-ranked female player said it was "one of my proudest contracts ever". Ms Sharapova immediately gave $100,000 to projects tackling the world's worst nuclear accident. Personal connection She explained that the issues were important to her as she had a personal connection with the area. After the accident and just before she was born, Ms Sharapova's father and pregnant mother fled from the Belarussian city of Gomel, some 80 miles (128km) north of Chernobyl. They went to Siberia where their daughter was born in 1987. "That's why it means so much to me to be a part of this project because I was sort of part of it as well. I hope that I can go there on field trips," Ms Sharapova said. She added that she was more nervous about this new role than before a Grand Slam tournament. The tennis pro has set up a private foundation which will channel funds into eight projects in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. The World Health Organisation estimates that some 9,300 people will die from cancers caused by Chernobyl's radiation.
