Final press-release of the main draw's third day:
The German Anna-Lena Groenefeld had to pull-out of her match against top seed Maria Sharapova, though she was clearly dominating the Russian 6/1, 4/2. In the 6th game of the second set when she was up 4/1 Groenefeld got injured (a left sprain ankle). She did step out on the court after the medical break but had to withdraw after losing her serve.
"That's not the way I like to win matches, but anything can happen in tennis", said the top seed of the Kremlin Cup tournament Maria Sharapova after her match against the German Anna-Lena Groenefeld who withdrew after leading 6/1, 4/2 due to a left ankle sprain. "I don't recall any other match like this in which I would be losing but which would still end in my favor",- the Russian said. In her words, she didn't yet come on top of her shape after a 2-week long break from competitions. "Practice is one thing but competition is a different story. My opponent did the right things and I didn't", Sharapova said admitting that she didn't approach the ball in the right way which led to numerous unforced errors. "But I did try to fight for every point ". Sharapova had a few warm words to say about the Moscow tennis fans who were actively supporting her. "You can feel such support only in your homeland", - Maria said, promising to show a better game in her next match.
3rd seed Mary Pierce outlasted the Italian Pennetta Flavia 4/6, 6/2, 6/3. Vera Zvonareva prevailed in the Russian derby against Maria Kirilenko - 6/2, 6/3. Elena Likhovtseva came over the Swiss Patty Schnyder in a close match - 1/6, 6/4, 6/3.
The second round also brought the first major sensation of the men's tournament as defending champion Nikolai Davydenko lost to the underdog Daniele Bracciali 6/3, 4/6, 4/6. "My shoulder was aching in the second set, so I had to slow down which played in to the hands of my opponent", Nikolai said. Mikhail Youzhny won his match against the Czech Lukas Dlouhy 6/4, 6/3. The champion of Russia Igor Kunitsyn outplayed the experienced French Fabrice Santoro - 6/4, 6/4. The 20-year old Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili lost to the big server from Belarus Max Mirny 6/4, 3/6, 1/6.
