All Seeds in Action Advance on Day One
No. 7 seed Igor Andreev started strong in his home country tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 win over German Philipp Kohlschreiber to advance to the second round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow. Andreev will now face Arnaud Clement, who posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Robin Vik.
Playing in the last match of the day, No. 4 seed Max Mirnyi defeated Wild Card Evgeniy Kirillov 6-1, 6-3. Kirillov is a promising junior Russian player who disputed the finals of the Russian championships last week.
In the All-German section of the draw, No. 6 seed Nicolas Kiefer faced little problems in his 6-4, 6-1 win over countryman Alexander Popp. Kiefer will now play Florian Mayer, who defeated Lars Burgsmuller 6-3, 6-2.
In the other match of the day, Jan Hernych defeated Florent Serra 6-4, 6-4 while four qualifiers (Kunitsyn, Ledovskikh, Dlouhy, Bohli) won their last match to enter the main draw.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Andreev: “I'm glad to have had such a good start, the match was very quick but the next opponent will be much tougher. I have time to prepare for it and I want to go far in this tournament in front of my crowd.”
Clement: "I hadn't played in Moscow for some years because of the schedule but I am happy to be back. It was a good first round match. I have played many matches this year and I have no goal for the end of the season, just to continue to feel good and enjoy myself on the court."

Gabashvili Stuns Muller, Volandri Eases into Second Round
20-year-old Teimuraz Gabashvili, born in Georgia but now living in Moscow and playing for Russia, scored his second career ATP win by defeating Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.
Gabashvili's only other ATP level win had come against James Blake in Delray Beach earlier this year. He is now 2-2 at the ATP level in 2005 and one of eight Russian players in the singles main draw.
No. 8 seed Filippo Volandri, who had won four sets to love during his last ATP event in Palermo (where he reached the final), won another 6-0 set against Romania's Razvan Sabau, before taking the match 6-0, 6-1. This was Volandri's first indoor match of 2005. The five remaining first round singles matches will be played on Wednesday featuring No. 1 seed and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko, No. 2 Dominik Hrbaty, No. 3 Mikhail Youzhny, No. 5 Greg Rusedski and veteran Fabrice Santoro

Gabashvili: "I know him (Muller) very well. We trained together at a tennis academy in Spain and I had time to study his game. He was very nervous from the beginning, he needed more confidence in order to get into the match but I did not give him any chance."
