MOSCOW, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Australian Open champion Marat Safin has pulled out of next week's Kremlin Cup, tournament organisers said on Monday.
Safin has not fully recovered from a ligament tear in his left knee that has troubled him since Wimbledon and forced him to withdraw from the U.S. Open.
The world number five said on his official website that he would not resume playing until the St Petersburg Open, which starts later this month, followed by the Paribas Masters in Bercy and then the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.
Safin's withdrawal is a huge blow to the Moscow organisers, who were hoping for the highly popular Muscovite to play in front of his home fans.
Maria Sharapova is also doubtful for the annual Moscow tournament after the world number one injured her chest muscle at last month's China Open.
The Florida-based Russian, who arrived in Moscow on Saturday, was undergoing treatment for a pectoral injury that forced her to pull out of her semi-final in Beijing.
Sharapova, hoping to make her Moscow debut, said: "I would love to play here and hopefully to win this tournament."
The $2.3 million Kremlin Cup begins next Monday.
