I'm a resident lurker, but for some reason decided to register. As a Muslim I decided to explain a few things or give my opinion on them. The Islam consists of 5 pillars and in order to be a good Muslim, you have to stick to all of them. They are: declaration of faith (there is no god but Allah), establishment of prayer (5 times a day), required expenditure (give to the poor), fasting and a pilgrimage to Mecca. Marat doesn't fast, doesn't pray, he drinks, smokes, has premarital sex , is in a relationship with a non-Muslim girl....he doesn't do much religious. It's his decision and I respect it. He does however show that he is a Muslim. He has an eye for protection on his arm, wears a necklace with a verse of the Koran on it, listens to the koran on cd, mp3 or perhaps Islamic radio. He gives to the poor, is an honest man, respects everybody, has Muslim beliefs (everything happens for a reason, he doesn't look ahead cause he might not be alive in the future). He has the right to live his life the way he wants to and whether he prays, etc. or not, he is a good human being and that counts for something as well. I'm a practising Muslim and there are so many religious things I don't do so don't hold that against Marat. Thank you Ilhame, your explantion is very interesting what you had to say and so well said, and your opinion is welcomed, thank you. Marat does have the right to live his life the way he wants, whether he prays etc or not and that he is a good human being, and that certainly counts for a lot. Well said. Thank you

Muslims are the third majority after Athiests and Orthodox Christians. They form about more than 15% of the whole population. You don't need your History teacher as you can search it on the internet by yourself. As you can see in the "CIA World Fact Book" Christians Orthodox and Muslims are the only mentioned. So yes it's common. www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/rs.html

Well I don't know so much about other religions, but isn't it totally normal that you don't do everything the way your religion tells you to, even while you're actually very comitted to your religon in the mean time?
Like, you could believe in God but never have entered a church in your life before... right.

It depends on the demands of the religion in question and what you personally believe is acceptable vs what is required. Anyone can believe in 'God' but it doesn't make them religious, and just entering a Church doesn't make you Christian, or entering a Buddhist Temple makes you a Buddhist. It's what you do with what you believe that matters. But maybe this isn't the place for religious discussion, because I can see this getting a bit heated BTW, thanks Ilhame for clearing things up Hope you enjoyed your day-trip to TGFR and give my regards to everyone on MTF ;D

I personally think that when he decided to give up alcohol, that may be a new start for believe in Islam. As we know his mother practises and must have been brought up having a rough idea of what is Islam. Since we are on about Marat being a muslim, does any1 know if Dina is a muslim.
Ruth did u do GCSE Re at school you speak very well about religous matters and can offer a different point of view.

Cigarettes are not forbidden in Islam but they are waste of money and health which is forbiddn in Islam. So yes its kinda forbidden. Is Marat a smoker??? Yeah, sorry to tell you but I read that he does smoke a little. He is a naughty boy doing this cos its bad for his health and you wouldnt think a tennis player would smoke, especially someone as fit as Marat! From what I can glean, he probably only does it occasionally, when he goes to discoes/nightclubs and has a bit to drink as well. Maybe after a big celebration such as this Slam he's just won! If he smoked too much I'm sure he wouldnt be able to maintain his fitness and good health so I wouldnt imagine he'd indulge too often. It's a filthy habit that kills people - I'm sure he'd want to look after his health! But it doesnt make for a good role model, a smoking tennis player that is, so like I said, I reckon he'd only do it occasionally. I cant imagine Peter, his coach, would be all that impressed with his smoking and has probably advised him to give up. I dont know, but it seems like a good idea to me.

Marat give up drinking? Nooooooo way, I dont believe it for a second! He went to a disco after his win and stayed there til 5.00 in the morning, then reportedly went to bed. I very much doubt he'd go to a disco and not drink anything! Someone said he looked hung over when he got on to that tram, I dont know whether he was or not but the newspaper said his head was thumping, referring to him having drunk too much. ;D
