France ready to challenge the Russians
The joy of Amélie Mauresmo, captain Georges Goven, and the whole French team was obvious after Mauresmo scored the winning point against Nuria Llagostera Vives 63 61 in Aix en Provence, to propel France into the Fed Cup final. There was a sense of relief as much as excitement, as the prospect of playing a first ever Fed Cup final on the Court Philippe Chatrier at Roland Garros was now reality.
“Let’s not hide it, throughout the week, people were telling us that everything was ready for the final in Paris, and how exciting it was going to be. But we didn’t want to think about it. We had a job to do first,” admitted Georges Goven after the victory.
“We all know how big the disappointment was after Paris was not awarded the 2012 Olympics, as many thought it was a done deal. So we didn’t want to feel a similar disillusion.”
As a result, the whole team remained focused on the tricky task of defeating Spain, a tie where it was a clear favourite. After Mauresmo and Pierce scored two relatively tight wins on Saturday, Mauresmo showed her class to ease past Llagostera Vives on Sunday.
A few minutes after Mauremo’s success, French Federation President Christian Bîmes announced that the final would be played on the main court at Roland Garros, Court Philippe Chatrier.
“We took the decision yesterday to play on the biggest court rather than on the Suzanne Lenglen, knowing that our oponents would very likely be the Russians, probably the best Fed Cup team in the world. We thought that in that case, filling out the 15,000 seats of the Court Phlippe Chatrier shouldn’t be a problem.”
Winner of the Fed Cup twice, in 1997 and 2003, France has never played a final at home. Runner-up against Russia in Moscow last year, with Guy Forget then still in the captain’s chair, France will now have a chance with new captain Goven to avenge the loss, and capture its third Fed Cup in the most prestigious venue possible.
“It’s a great reward. We were all dreaming about it. We have been very consistent at the highest possible level these last few years, and here it is, we are in the final for the third consecutive year” said Mauresmo.
“This proves that France is a great tennis nation. We all invested a lot in this competition. I just hope it’s going to be a fantastic event.”
As for challenging Russia once again, Mauresmo, who has won her last 14 singles matches in Fed Cup, felt it would make the event even more exciting.
“This time we will play them at home. The atmosphere has been great here in Aix, and I hope it wll be the same in Paris. We will not be the favuorites as Russia has a great crop of high-level players. Each one of them takes Fed Cup extremely seriously, so we will have to play above ourselves too. We will.”

Russia and France set up Fed Cup final 2005-07-10 13:19:09 GMT (Reuters)
By Martyn Herman
LONDON, July 10 (Reuters) - Anastasia Myskina ended the resistance of the United States on Sunday and sent defending champions Russia into a Fed Cup final repeat against France.
The former French Open champion beat Jill Craybas 6-2 6-4 in Moscow's Olympic Stadium after Venus Williams had briefly raised U.S. hopes that they could overturn a 2-0 deficit.
Spain never even threatened a comeback against France as Amelie Mauresmo finished them off with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Nuria Llagostera Vives in Aix-en-Provence to give them an unassailable 3-0 lead.
France, who will contest their third successive Fed Cup final in September, will be gunning for revenge after losing to Russia last year in Moscow.
This time the 2003 winners will have the advantage of overwhelming home support with the showpiece taking place at Roland Garros.
"We played them (Russia) away a few times over the past few years," said Mauresmo, who notched up her 15th successive Fed Cup victory. "It will be great to play them before our home fans."
Since the Fed Cup changed its format in 1995 there have been only four comebacks from 0-2 deficits.
Venus, who barely a week ago celebrated her third Wimbledon title, took little more than an hour to halve her team's deficit when she took world number five Elena Dementieva apart.
The 25-year-old American had looked jaded when losing to Myskina on Saturday, but she was revitalised on Sunday to overpower Dementieva 6-1 6-2 on the slow clay court.
Her efforts proved in vain, however, as Craybas, who stunned Serena Williams at Wimbledon, fell to Myskina after being brought in as a late replacement for Mashona Washington.
American captain Zina Garrison can only ponder what might have been had world number one Lindsay Davenport not been forced to pull out of the tie with a back injury sustained against Venus in the brutal Wimbledon final.
