Myskina seals Russia's place in final Not by accident are France and Russia the runaway leaders in the Fed Cup rankings, and not by accident will the two nations meet in September's final for the second year running.
In retrospect the crucial rubber of the weekend was Anastasia Myskina's victory over Venus Williams on Saturday, for while Williams salvaged some pride with a 61 62 win over Elena Dementieva in the first reverse singles, it was only delaying Myskina's moment to take Russia into a second successive final.
Though people will say the US team was weakened through the loss of Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams, it's possible Myskina would have beaten either of them in what is one of her favourite arenas. She has won two Kremlin Cup titles in the Olympic Stadium, and her only defeat here in the past three years was against Amelie Mauresmo in the 2003 Fed Cup semifinals.
After a poor year on the tour, caused partly by anxiety over off-court distractions, Myskina hit her best form of 2005 during Saturday's victory over Williams, and continued that into the decisive rubber against the USA's Jill Craybas, who was making her Fed Cup singles debut in place of the originally nominated Mashona Washington. Though Craybas played a solid match and made good a 2-4 deficit in the second set, beating Myskina in Moscow proved too tough an assignment, the Russian winning 62 64.
Myskina said: "I played really well, except for a couple of games in the second set. I was feeling a little pain in my leg, but it was OK. It's a great feeling to be back in the final again. I love playing in front of this crowd."
Williams' victory gave an indication of what might have been for the American team. The intensity that was a central part of her Wimbledon triumph had returned after her subdued performance against Myskina, and that seemed to cower Dementieva into a nervous state of mind. The three break points Williams saved in the opening game proved crucial, as did the best rally of the match, in which Williams ran down a Dementieva drop shot to break for 2-1 in the second set.
"I felt so bad yesterday," said Williams after her win. "The reason I'm here is that I love Zina [Garrison, the US captain] and I wanted to win for her. Yesterday I had some negative points where I lost a game or two, which made a difference to the match because I just wasn't there. I just wanted to come today and do a lot better."
Williams gamely turned out for the doubles, teaming with Davenport's friend and regular doubles partner Corina Morariu, but by then the force was with Russia, as Vera Douchevina and Dinara Safina won 61 75 to make the final score 4-1.
During the doubles news filtered through to Moscow that the French Tennis Federation had confirmed September's final would be at Roland Garros. That's fine by Myskina, who won the French Open title last year and has played much better at the home of French tennis than France's top player Amelie Mauresmo. "There'll be a lot of pressure on the French girls," said Myskina, "so I like that."
