I don't know if Marat will play anywhere next week - I couldn't find him on the entry lists of Nottingham, s'Hertogenbosch or Boodles. So I thought it might be time for this year's Wimbledon thread. I must admit I don't expect too much from Marat here, but I know there are a lot of grass-lovers out there who will take care of the cheerleading. ;D

WIMBLEDON, England (AP)—Vincent Spadea and Thierry Ascione earned Wimbledon spots Friday when organizers decided not to award the final two of eight wild cards in the men’s draw.

Spadea, an American ranked 110th, and Ascione, a Frenchmen ranked 119th, were the two players next in the rankings who were eligible to play at the grass court major, which starts June 23.

The 34-year-old Spadea will be at his 13th Wimbledon. He lost in the first round the past two years and his best performance was the fourth round in 2004, when he reached a career-high No. 19 ranking.

Ascione will make his second Wimbledon appearance. He lost in the first round in his only other attempt in 2004.

The other men’s wild-card recipients were 2002 semifinalist Xavier Malisse, Britons Jamie Baker and Alex Bogdanovic, Canada’s Frank Dancevic and Jeremy Chardy of France.

Australia’s Samantha Stosur was awarded a wild card Friday for the women’s draw, joining six others announced earlier in the week. The others are former junior No. 1 Urszula Radwanska of Poland, Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro and Britons Elena Baltacha, Naomi Cavaday, Katie O’Brien and Melanie South are the others.

There is one more women’s singles’ wild card to be announced.

first withdrawals ...

LONDON (AP) - Carlos Moya of Spain and Argentines Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Monaco are among the first players to withdraw from Wimbledon due to injuries.

The All England Club announced Monday that the 31-year-old Moya, who was ranked No. 1 in March 1999 but has slipped to No. 40 with recurring injuries, has an injured shoulder.

Moya, the 1998 French Open champion, has never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon but has only played in the grass-court championship twice in the previous six years. Of his 20 career titles, 16 are on clay and four on hard courts.

Chela also has a shoulder problem and Monaco withdrew with an injured back.

Argentines Martin Vassallo Arguello and Brian Dabul and Croatia's Roko Karanusic come into the main draw as replacements.

Japan's Akiko Morigami withdrew from the women's singles draw with an injured knee and was replaced by Czech player Renato Voracova.

It's pure unabashed speculation, but it does make ya think about the possibilities ....

it will be a short week at the office for marat first round ok but the second round will be hard.he lost to fed last year this year he has novak .marat would have better luck buying lottery ticket.than trying his luck with this draw.i hope he can have a laugh

ppl keep saying whenever he faces a top 10 opponent that he'll lose. Marat himself wants to get back into the top 10 and win major tournaments. The only way he can do that is beat top 10/ top 5 opponents, thats the only we he can advance in the draw. With The defeatist attitude there's no way he's going to beat so and so player, he'll never go up the rankings and will always keep losing the second round of every tournament. Marat has to believe that he still has that fire and the ability to produce excellent tennis and beat anybody. For those who say this is "unrealistic", stranger and much more impossible things have happened in the world of tennis. I don't think expecting one of the greatest talents in tennis to make a resurgence back into top 10 is unrealistic.

On a superficial note, also according to the eurosport website, many players have recently grown and/or lost weight. Marat, of course, has done both: 1.95m tall(it used to be 1.93 according to the atp website, as far as I know) now and weighs only 81 kg! Roger also grew a bit, he's now 1.87m (1.85 before) and Novak has reached 1.90 (1.87 before) and 75 kg (down from 80). I wonder if they really measured the guys again or if these are merely mistakes as the female Davydenko player above...

Marat only played Novak once (correct me if I am wrong) 1st round at AO 2005.
He totally demolished Novak. At that time, Marat was No 4 in the world and Novak was just a new kid in the block.

Right now, it's different. Marat is struggling with his ranking and Novak has everything under his belt. Well, I still think Marat is capable of competing with Novak whereas Rafa, I really am not sure becuz Rafa's game, IMHO, is something Marat doesn't like.

Hope that Marat passes 1st round easily with confidence to face Novak. Grass is not his fav surface. But he did have some good results before. With Marat, nothing can be predicted. So, good luck and DAVAI, MARATIK!!!!!!
