Wednesday OOP:
STADIO PIETRANGELI start 1:00 pm [3] N. Djokovic (SRB) vs S. Darcis (BEL) [8] J. Blake (USA) vs A. Seppi (ITA) J. Ferrero (ESP) vs [2] R. Nadal (ESP) Not Before 8:30 PM P. Starace (ITA) vs I. Karlovic (CRO) F. Lopez (ESP) / F. Verdasco (ESP) vs [4] M. Bhupathi (IND) / M. Knowles (BAH)

Wawrinka (SUI) WTF is wrong with the organizers? I honor a healthy dose of patriotism, but scheduling Karlovic vs. Starace as the evening match? Who wants to see that - except a few Italians? All the really good stuff happens before 5 pm. Well, I guess I can see Andy (but more Wawrinka - I'll puke...). Good luck to Novak, David, Rafa and Mario

Just watched Andy v Wawrinka. Good God. I've forgiven the Swissmeister for beating the boy now. And Juan Carlos beat Rafa! What a day. And I am with laptop. It took the third delivery attempt (nobody told the courier that you have to ring a doorbell to get the occupant to answer the door ... duh ... very big door numbers and nameplates don't count either ... duh ...) to be with laptop as of 4pm today. Mother and laptop are doing well, although mother is now staring at wireless and broadband offers in a state of post delivery depression. Laptop is wailing to be activated to a fast internet access ... but mother is struggling with the demands. In the old days, you just had to plug the wee buggers in and you were off ...

*woot for James, Nikolay (although bummer for Mario), Igor, and Tommy on their wins today *Rafa loses ... something had to give at some point, but man ... his & Ferrer's loss shot my bracket & team all to dust for this week (although I'm sure I'm not the only one) but Rafa's clay stats are just bananas: - Nadal's loss to Juan Carlos Ferrero on Wednesday was only the second in his last 105 matches on clay dating back to April, 2005 (.981 winning percentage). - Has won 20 of the 35 clay-court tournaments he has entered in his career. - Has won all seven Davis Cup singles matches on clay. - Is 21-0 with three consecutive titles at the French Open. dramatic recap on the tourney's site ... I'm sure that has to do with the translation INJURED RAFA LOSES OPENING MATCH History will remember that Rafael Nadal lost his opening match of the 2008 Internazionali BNL d'Italia to Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5 6-1. Nothing strikes you? That Nadal should take such a beating to a player he has yet to lose to on clay? Generally speaking, tennis is a logical sport and every result has an explanation. Time to analyze. The all Spaniard match kicked off as planned with no break points until 4-5 Nadal serving. He held serve. At the following change of sides Nadal had the physical therapist come on the court but no treatment just a verbal exchange between the player and the trainer. Ferrero then had another break point/set point in his favor while being up 6-5 which he this time converted. The first set went to the older of the two. However something was not right. In the second set Nadal was no longer moving like the defender that he is. His footwork was no longer as precise and his serve was not comming in with pace. The world number 2 player and triple title holder here in Rome was clearly handicapped in some way and it seemed to come from his foot. Sure enough at 4-1 the trainer with the doctor came back on court to this time treat Nadals right foot which was clearly missing a piece of skin. (read: blister, which apparently has been bothering him for a couple days ... but doesn't that just paint a pretty picture?) From then on Ferrero knew all he needed to do was make his compatriot run until the points and the match ended. Which is exacly what he did. Final score 7-5 6-1 and a big win for Juan Carlos. But knowing the circumstances of the win, getting down on his knees may have been a little extravagant...

The first set of yesterday's "epic" upset was wonderful clay court tennis, the best I've seen in a while. Rafa and JCF were like chess players who patiently tried to outmaneuver their respective opponent. Mary might've found it boring, LOL (not net play to be spotted). The set could've gone either way, it was very tight. Big shame that Rafa fell apart in set 2 - and EWWW to the live stream for giving me close-ups of the blisters on Rafa's foot. I'll be curious to see whether JCF can keep up his form. Today's match-ups - I don't know. I usually pride myself in watching pretty much EVERYTHING as long as it's tennis , but apart from Novak - Igor (2 sets for Nole of course ) nothing really tempts me. I hope Hamburg will get a better draw. Weather in Hamburg is absolutely brilliant, BTW. 25° C (75° F), no wind, no clouds! And it's going to stay this way, unbelievable! Next week will be amazing!

Waw is getting better and better .....
Just beat JC in straight sets, 6-4, 6,3 after beating Marat and Murray to book a position in the quarter-final.
That kinda makes me feel better about Marat's loss........
