Maybe a bit harsh to say he's lazy - after his injuries, he got out there and trained hard. How many of us could put hand on heart and say that we'd still have the appetite, or the will, to do that? I doubt that it's 'because he's used to it' that that's the reason for driving him on. Why would anyone want the life of a professional tennis player? Endless travelling ... little home life ... the rewards might be good when it's going swimmingly, but what about when your form is off? I certainly wouldn't write the boy off for losing a couple of matches. I don't think he's waiting for 'a sparkle', I think he's his own worst enemy and convinces himself that it can't last when he's playing well. It's a cycle he needs to break - and I think he will. He's well aware that time is running out, but he's still one of the fittest on the tour and has another couple of years where he could get some good results. It's his mind that he needs to strengthen and focus. If his fans don't expect much, why should he? A kick up the backside won't go amiss to wake him up though. Maybe Gummy is too kind on him. I wouldn't be. Fairy Godmother or not. ;D You're so right, Mary! He indeed doesn't have to do it for the money anymore, and if he doesn't like to play the game too, why is he still going on then... I mean, for all of us it's already so hard to see him struggle this hard, i can't even imagine what it would be for him and his close circle around him I feel he still has the desire to play the amazing tennis he did before, but that there is something going on in his mind that wouldn't let him, unfortunately ...... The fitness is there, the will as well... the only thing missing here is the c word......

Thank you, maryb! and specially for invincible1, this is from Tarpischev interview after Marat's match against Hewitt (answering the question about the reason of the losses) :"Marat had a bad luck at Davis Cup in Moscow. I saw his practice, he was in a very good form. I wanted him to play doubles and singles on the last day. But he torn the ligament . So basically he has to start again fom zero, to regain his form back"

oh and regarging fighting spirit. Did he have no fighting spirit at all when he made comeback in 2004 after the injury and won all those tough 5-set matches on his way to the final in Australia? Did he have no fighing spirit when he won final set 9-7 agaisnt Fed? Marat is not the best in the fighting spirit departemnt, that's for sure. But it's ridiculous to think that any player (even very much talented) can win GS titles or any title at all without fighting spirit.

guys,chill....i'm on your and his f*****g side lol...but that is my oppinion and i shared it. Marti, that was Marat 2005...not Marat 2008. That is a big difference between them unfortunately. Maybe the mentality hasn't thoroughly changed, but if you can tell me exactly what's going on,i shall give you a prize.

But it was you who said that he has never had fighing spirit. That's why I brought up his 2004 comeback. Imo his fighing spirit kicks in only when he believes he can win. Without confidence he gives up. As for what's going on, I guess it's combination of many things. He's pretty old and can't move as well as he used to, he's worn out by injuies and mental pressure , total lack of confidence and yes, sometimes lack of fighting spirit. Plus bad luck - he worked hard during off-season and started to play much better and had a good chances after AO but got injured again. So, do I have my prize? ;P

Yeah Marti...you're right, we have reached an agreement. You won the prize...So you admit that he's worn out and sometimes out of order. But please don't say that he's old..cause i dive into this kind of revery of memories with Marat in his best years...and i'm so ****ing angry, but also sad because things aren't the same...let's just hope for better at Miami...Fingers crossed..
Cheers,girls

I know it's still there, so gonna do my duty and dust and dust and dust and dust and dust and dust till it's out in the open again ;D
