FAQ’s:
Where did the website go?
Ruth closed theguyfromrussia.com website in August 2005 when she left. However, all the original content of the website has been transferred to this board and she helped start the TGFR online community before leaving. If you need to contact Ruth, see one of the admins.
How do I put my picture as an avatar/in my signature?
First, your picture must be on the internet somewhere:
• If your picture is not on the internet:
1) You need to open a free photo hosting account with someone like www.yahoo.com (yahoo photos) , imageshack.us/ or www.photobucket.com
2) Once you’ve registered with a company, upload your photo to the account.
3) Congrats, your photo is now on the net! Follow the next set of instructions.
• If you found it on a website:
1) Right click the picture and choose ‘properties’
2) Highlight the link next to ‘Address (URL)’ and copy (use ‘ctrl’ + ‘c’)
• How to add your image as an avatar/signature:
1) Login to the board and click ‘profile’(under the banner) then ‘modify profile’
• For Avatars:
1) Choose ‘none’ in the drop down menu next to ‘avatar’
2) Insert the link (‘ctrl’ + ‘v’) into the box ‘avatar URL’
3) Your image for an avatar must not be bigger than 100x100 pixels in size or it will not appear. To find the dimensions of the image, right click it and choose properties. The dimensions will be listed in pixels.
• For Signatures:
1. Insert the link in the ‘signature’ box between the [ img] and [/ img] as seen in the image below (you must type the image tag codes or use copy (‘ctrl’ + ‘c’ ) and then paste it (‘ctrl’ + ‘v’) )
2. Be aware that you have a maximum of 400 characters allowed in a signature and this includes every character in a link.
When you’re finished, go to the bottom of the page and click ‘modify profile’
IMPORTANT: Images in signatures with a width above 800 pixels are not allowed and will be deleted.
If you have any doubt about it you can post it in this thread. Click here
How do I add my photos to my report?
First, your photos must be on the internet somewhere:
• If your photos are not on the internet (i.e on your computer):
1) You need to open a free photo hosting account with someone like www.yahoo.com (yahoo photos) , imageshack.us/ or www.photobucket.com
2) Once you’ve registered with a company, upload your photos to the account.
3) Congrats, your photo is now on the net! Follow the next set of instructions.
How do I add photos/pictures to a message?
Assuming your photos/pictures are on the internet (if not, read the previous answer)
1) Right click the picture and choose ‘properties’
2) Highlight the link next to ‘Address (URL)’ and copy (use ‘ctrl’ + ‘c’)
3) Press the image button that is where the cursor in the next image is.
4) Insert the link (‘ctrl’ + ‘v’) between the image tag code as seen in the next image
5) This is called a ‘hotlink’. You can add as many of your own hotlinks as you like to a message, although make sure each link is on it’s own line like this:
[ img]www.myphotos.com/myphoto1.jpg[/img]
[ img]www.myphotos.com/myphoto2.jpg[/img]
[ img]www.myphotos.com/myphoto3.jpg[/img]
When you are done just post your message as normal and the photos/pictures should appear!
IMPORTANT: You can`t post images that end with .pic, .bmp, and others. The only valid image extensions you can have in your posts, avatars, private messages and signatures are .jpg, .gif, and .png
What is hotlinking and what are the TGFR rules on this?
Why won’t my picture appear?
What is bandwidth?
Hotlinking is posting a photo from one website on a second website or forum, but using the same link from the first website.
This is why sometimes it's impossible to post a photo on a message board: the website where the photo is from has protected its bandwidth by disabling 'hotlinking'.
Bandwidth is the quota of megabytes or gigabytes allowed to be viewed by visitors per day or per month. Free websites usually have a set quota that is very small. Owners of larger websites pay for larger bandwidth quotas as part of their hosting package. When the bandwidth quota is reached, the website will shut down.
Posting photos affects the bandwidth of the site they are from. So linked photos from getty, affects getty bandwidth: linked photos from yahoo! affects yahoo! bandwidth etc etc.
Bandwidth is not affected if just a link is posted like this:
Hi! Visit my new website www.readaboutbandwidth.com – come visit!
(The bandwidth will begin as soon as someone clicks the link to view the photo, but they will be visiting the original website)
But bandwidth is affected if the photo is posted 'fullscale' - i.e you post the link between the 'img - /img' tags and the photo appears in your message.
With regard to posting images on TGFR - it's usually ok to post from major sites like yahoo!, getty, news agencies etc etc, but please don't post pictures already hosted on TGFR on the message board, and avoid posting photos 'fullscale' from Safinator, Safin Lounge and other fan sites. They've been kind enough to show TGFR the same anti-hotlinking courtesy, it's the least we can do for them If you find a photo from any of these sites, it's ok to just post the link but don’t put it between ‘img’ tags, ok? The same applies to hotlink in open threads (the ones where you can post) pics from "TGFR Collection" threads. This pics are the ones which URL starts with www.theguyfromrussia.com As it is said previously, post only the link to the pic.
Hope this explains things a bit! Oh one last thing to anyone a bit confused - if you're unsure where the photo is from, just look at the link. So if it says 'www.theguyfromrussia.com/marat_photo.jpg' then the source would be TGFR. If someone was to post that photo on another board 'fullscale' (ie, it appears inside the message), it would be using TGFR's bandwidth everytime someone viewed the photo even though it appears on another board. I don't know if I've explained that clearly, it's a difficult thing to explain at the best of times!
How do I add bold or italics or colour to my messages? How do I include quotes?
You can't do this through the quick reply box at the bottom of pages unless you know the tag codes and type them . If you are new to this, click the 'reply' button next to the message you want to reply to.
If you want to quote someone, instead of clicking 'reply,' click 'quote' button next to it.
Bold - click the 'B' button above the smilies in your reply, and writte whatever you want written in bold between the bold tag codes as seen in the next image.
For italics, click the 'I' button next to it, and again, write whatever you want to writte in italics between the italic tag codes.
It's the same principle for colours (and most of the tags) , that are selected from the drop down menu in the "Add Tags" menu.
I’m locked out of the board!
Ok, first of all, this doesn’t mean you are banned! If you are banned, you would know about it. Here are some possible reasons:
1)The board has been put in maintenance mode by the admins – everyone is locked out until they finish fixing something.
2) If it’s a particular thread or forum you can’t access, contact the mod for that board, or one of the admins. If a padlock icon appears alongside a thread, the board has been locked by a member of staff. If no padlock appears but you can’t post, ask a member of staff to lock then unlock the thread (as recommended by proboards support staff)
3) You may be trying to access an area of the board you don’t have permission to access, such as the moderators forum.
If this doesn’t help, read the next question and answer…..
I keep being locked out when I try to post something!
If you can login but get ‘thrown out’ when you try to post, your security settings may be set too high or you have a firewall installed that is actively stopping you. (i.e it is a problem on your computer, not the message board)
1) Open internet explorer and go to ‘tools’ > ‘internet options’
2) Click the ‘security’ tab at the top of the window
3) Select ‘medium’ as your security setting and then ‘ok’
4) If ‘custom level’ is already selected, click ‘default level’, then choose medium.
Don’t forget to select stay logged in ‘forever’ on the drop down menu when you login, or you will be automatically logged out every couple of hours, whether you are online or not.
My registration hasn’t arrived and I can’t login!
This sometimes happens, especially if your email address is an AOL address. It’s a problem with proboards.com, and we have no control over it. All registration is an automatic system.
1) Contact one of the TGFR administrators or email theguyfromrussia@hotmail.com
2) Explain the situation and tell them the name and email address you registered with.
3) They will check the member database and if your registration was successful, they will change your password and send you a new password to login with. (you can change your password once you are logged in, just go to ‘profile’ beneath the banner)
4) If your registration had failed for some reason, try registering again with a different email address or open a free hotmail.com email account and use that.
Is it possible to change my login name?
You can’t change the name you use to login to the board with. But you can change the name that appears alongside your messages:
1) Go to ‘profile’
2) Type your new name in ‘display name’
Do I need staff permission to post my fan report/photos?
No, go ahead and post it on the fan report forum – the more the merrier!
Do I need staff permission to post my fan-fiction?
Yes, a member of staff will need to read it first before it is posted on the board. Please contact the moderator for the fan fiction board first.
A few things for fan fic writers to remember:
New submissions are always welcome, but if you're interested in writing for TGFR, here are a few things for fan fic writers to remember:
• Marat Safin needs to be one of the main characters
• Don’t use your fan fic as a thinly-disguised soapbox for general rantings and ravings against stuff (the ATP, other Marat sites, other Marat fans, religious viewpoints etc etc) Fans want to read a story, not a list of your opinions.
• Graphic adult content and too much gratuitous bad language will guarantee your story isn’t accepted. In some countries, this kind of content is illegal and it is abusive towards Marat himself, if he is part of your fan fiction. We also have no way of stopping children from reading this board.
• If your fan fiction is accepted and posted, fans from all over the world will be able to read it, so please be sensitive in your writing with regard to other cultures, languages and religions.
• Fan fiction on TGFR is currently in English only (until we find some multilingual fan fic mods ) If you use any kind of slang, please include a ‘normal english’ translation of the word(s). (Usually at the bottom of the chapter)
• All fan fics must be submitted with a title for the story, your name, and an email address for contacting you. Pseudonyms are ok. ;D
• When writing about Marat, or any of the real people in his life (family, friends, management, coaches etc) or on the tour (other players, umpires etc) please do it with respect. Nobody wants to get sued!
• To submit a story, you must be the original writer of the fan-fiction.
• If you haven't been scared off ( ;D) and still want to submit your Marat fan-fic, then contact the board moderator or one of the administrators.
Some of this may sound obvious or strict, but it's based on past experience. We have to be a little responsible sometimes, and make sure you know the score.
Why do you allow discussion of Marat's private life here?
As long as the topics are done with respect and courtesy to Marat and the people involved, we see no reason to ban it. TGFR has always allowed this, and it’s never really been a problem. It’s much easier to demolish nasty rumours and stop silly gossip when the topic is allowed to be discussed, rather than ignored, ridiculed or deleted. TGFR has always tried to be an open place, where fellow Marat fans can (hopefully!) find friendly, sensible answers.
Usually the stuff posted on TGFR is:
1)Already public domain (i.e, there are photos & credible reports/articles/TV pictures already circulating)
2)References Marat himself has made in interviews etc.
3)Things that we wouldn't be embarrassed for Marat to read himself.
4) Out-of-hand rumours that really need to be addressed.
Do threads reach a posting limit?
No, not that I’m aware of. Happy posting!
