5 Corners Magazine 2000
The St. Petersburg newspaper for modern teenagers
Domestic players Kafelnikov and Kournikova are popular both here and in the west. Following Zhenya and Anna's universal adoration came the 19 year old favourite of girls everywhere: Marat Safin.
He achieved recognition in 1998 with his victories at the French Open over such tennis giants as Andre Agassi, Gustavo Kuerten and Daniel Vacek. Phrases such as 'sensational Russian' littered the many articles used in popular sports magazines and newspapers dedicated to Marat.
Safin began 1998 ranked 194th in the world and finished 48th. Now he's 39th. He has many well known fans, one of which is Madonna herself. The world famous pop icon placed Marat in her top ten list of men she would like to have a child with, and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (familiar to us from Beverley Hills 90210) told of her desire to drag the tennis star into bed.
Recently, Marat was very popular at the ATP St Petersburg Open: his matches were the most attended of the tournament.(Instead of the more prominant Jan Siemerink and Marc Rosset matches.)
After the match, crowds of fans followed, him wanting autographs and photos as souvenirs. But nevertheless, I managed to extract a small interview with him, which was held after the Hrbaty/Bernar v Safin/Rosset doubles match.
Q. What can you say about today's loss? (during that day, Marat had also lost to Hrbaty in the singles)
M.The Russian team in general are suffering from arm and leg injuries. I couldn't serve well, and consequently, we lost.
Q. Marat, what is Hrbaty like as a person?
M. Intelligent (Interviewers note: more intelligent, by the way, than he appears) and cheerful.
Q.Would you like to play doubles with him?
M. Yes. If we could find the time.
Q. Who else would you like to play doubles with?
M. Well, I enjoyed playing with Carlos Moya.
Q. And how are you enjoying the tournament?
M. Very much. And the food here is very tasty.
Q. Marat, how much does the public help you win?
M. Alot, they give me confidence. Here, one girl shouted 'Marat! We're with you!' and it helped me.
Q.Are you superstitious? Do you have any lucky charms?
M. No, I'm not superstitious. But I have a necklace right here. It's from my sister and I always wear it.
Q. By the way, how is she doing? (Marat's sister Dinara is a 12 year-old tennis player)
M. I haven't seen her for a while, so I don't know.
Q. You are a huge Spartak Moscow fan. Do you still follow them?
M. Yes, but I haven't been able to follow them closely for about a year and a half. Everything's changed now.
Q. Who are your favourite players?
M. Alexander Most and Karpin. ( Interviewers note: Most and Karpin have recently moved to Spanish club 'Selte')
Q. And what's your favourite cartoon?
M. "Well, wait!"
