Hey,
I spent the half day on writing this report, so I hope you can understand, have fun.... ;D
This year in May I went to the ATP-Masters-Series tournament in Hamburg, where Marat was in the final twice.
It was very convenient; I am living in Hamburg and at that time we had holidays. So I could spend the whole day at ,,Rothenbaum’’, that is the name of the famous tennis ground.
I went there with a good friend, she has been there twice but it was the first time for me to go there.
After watching the German players Rainer Schuettler and Tommy Haas practicing on center court, I saw Fernando Gonzalez when he defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu in straight sets.
Hamburg is famous for its bad weather. Also Tuesday, the 10th of May 2005: Gonzalez just won his match 6:4 6:4 and it started raining. It was so terribly cold. All matches were suspended, apart from the one on centre court, where the Argentinean David Nalbandian lost to Robin Soderling 6:7 5:7. I stood there at the postern with my friend to protect against the rain. After getting a signature from Dirk Hordorff, the German coach of Rainer Schüttler, there was Tim Henman going to the locker room and players lounge. First I didn’t realize that it was him because he was so tall. At TV I heard he would be so small.
Beside of him I saw Bjorkman walking around . I did not know recognize him and so I thought he was a coach or something like that. Maybe there could have been the chance to get a photo taken with him, but I missed it. I am so stupid!!!
And then there was another big player coming, it was Marat Safin with his coach Peter Lundgren and some security guards. He is much taller than me and I am 5’5’’! You can not believe how tall he is! ;D
After the rain stopped I went back to Court 4, where Aspelin/Perry lost to Germanys Kiefer/Waske 7:6 3:6 5:7.
Besides watching Schüttler-Seppi (5:7 7:6 4:6) and some other matches I can not remember. I also saw Marat eating noodles with tomato sauce.
Then the highlight of the whole day in the night session: Marat Safin against Alberto Martin from Spain. It was quite late, so a lot fans already went home. Pretty good for me and my friend because we were able to sit in the third row. We wanted to take some photos and our aim was getting a signature from the reigning Australian Open Champion.
It was one of the best matches I ever saw from Marat. In less than one hour he executed Alberto Martin 6:1 6:0. After winning this fantastic match, so many fans were stormed to Marat to snatch an autograph. I couldn’t believe that there are so many fans, only 10 seconds after Marat’s victory.
I already lost the hope to get one of his coveted autographs because he had already written so many at that stage and went to the exit. Then he looked back to his fans which could not get an autograph. He went back to his fans and that is why I know he is really attached to them. And I got a signature, I am still so happy. ;D My friend got one as well, we were both so glad.
But Marat’s victory-series was stopped by Juan-Carlos Ferrero who beat him 4:6 6: 6:2.
I hope Marat will come back to Hamburg next year and I will be there too.
To everybody who reads this:
Come to Hamburg, it’s an amazing city, (auch, wenn es öfter mal regnet). Support Hamburg; the ATP-Master should stay here.
Maybe we met each other there….
