Kremlin Cup Report 2004

The company I work for, it was one of the sponsors of the Kremlin cup, and i was some kind of a representative of our company there at the tournament...
Yesterday I went to the Kremlin Cup for the last arrangements: all the sponsors were to take back all their staff. It was a bit depressing. So bright during the play days, the Olympiysky stadium reminded me some dull, ruined house.
It was not easy, those 9 days of the Kremlin cup. However, despite the lack of sleep and tiredness, it was a great pleasure for me to be there. It was nothing special, my job, just to supervise the work of managers at our stand and to settle down local problems that would always rise. But just being there, it was worth it.
There are some things I will never forget about this year’s Kremlin Cup:
Lindsay Davenport’s breakfast: she was on her way from the players’ lounge to court 1 carrying a piece of cake with fruits and a yogurt. A tail of children not daring ask for an autograph was following. She was real cool.
Men’s Singles Final: Kolia-tam-tam-tam-Kolia-tam-tam-tam!!! He must be a very strong person, Davydenko. Not all the players are able to do with their nerves especially in front of a 15-thousand cheering crowd.
Marat Safin in the morning after his 2nd round loss: he was walking through the inside area with his coach. He was wearing brown leather jacket, gray jeans and sneakers (unfortunately not his track-suit). When some game-boys came up to him for an autograph I saw him refuse (i had never seen him refuse before).
Misha Youzhny in the semis vs. Davydenko: (1) It just so happened that Davydenko served straight at the net, and a game boy had problems with taking it away. Some judges came up to measure the net. While they were managing all the staff, Misha sat on the BOSS chair of one of the baseline judges. It was like he didn’t care at all and remained cool. I guess how nervous he actually was! Anyways, he was so cute sitting like that! (2) After Youzhny won the 2nd set to even the
match 1:1, he turned around to the audience zone and looked at all those people supporting him though the second set. He smiled and made this very tennis gesture with his hand (like when they win a point). It was touching...
Davydenko staring at me: in the morning on one of the play days, when I arrived early as usual to open our stand... His look was so weird. Still wonder what was wrong about me (or our stand?) (or about Davydenko???).
Mirny/Safin playing doubles 1st round: I met by a pure chance one of our corporate managers who was already leaving. She gave me her ticket so that I could see the match. (even though I had a sponsor accreditation, it didn’t let me enter the court to see matches, and I had tickets not for all the play days). Imagine my surprise when I found myself sitting right behind Safin’s coach, next to the American team’s coach!
Mirny/Safin doubles 1st round: Mirny hitting slightly with his racket Safin (at his buddy) )
Indesit girls: they can hear what the players say when they have a break between the games and I learnt that Myrny cried after he lost to Safin, Safin threw everything to hell when he was losing in his 2nd round, and they together told each other when playing doubles: Why the hell are we sitting? Let’s go play.
Igor Andreev: he definitely enjoyed walking though the vip area. He was nice. Glad he could win his first title (doubles).
Vera Zvonareva: i told her once (usually i never come up to players!) “Win Vera!...” – “Thanks!...” and she won! They bet in the finals with Myskina world no.1 pair Suarez/ Ruano Pascual
The matches I loved the most
No.1 Men Singles Final: Davydenko vs. Rusedski
No.2 Men Singles Semis: Youhny vs. Davydenko
No.3 Men Doubles 1st round: Safin/Mirmy vs.
Bryan/Bryan
... guess that's it. i think i would have loved most of all Safin win the Kremlin cup. no such luck. hope to see him next year...
