Marat at US Open 2003
Report by Lana
I talked to Marat yesterday. I got seats right behind where his mom and 2 men were sitting. He came at the end of 2nd set, passed by us saying "Excuse me" and got next to his mom. He was wearing jeans, Burgundy t-shirt, some kind of hat, sunglasses, cast and 2-days shave. He kissed his mom and started watching the match. During the break in the match I asked him how is his wrist. He said, it is much better and he would start practicing in 2 weeks. I asked if he is going to play this year. He said yes, his first tournament will be Kremlin Cup. I asked if it's too early and might jeopardize his career and it might be better wait till next year. You know what he said? He must support and provide for his family, LOL. At the end of conversation I said that he has a lot of fans around a world and well wish him good luck.It was a questionable call at the end of match when Dinara lost the game serving for a match. She started arguing and Marat said "Igrai, igrai!!" ("Keep playing") to her. I said quietly "Look who is talking!", but he heard and laughed.

Marat at US Open 2003
Report by NJ
I was at the Open today. Passed by Dinara's match but didn't see him then. Was standing by the practice courts and I saw Denis. I wondered if Marat was far behind, though it seemed like wishful thinking at that point. But, lo and behold, the man himself made an appearance! He came out with a couple of guys from Elite (don't know their names but Allon was already at the match) and walked towards Dinara's match. A few people stopped him and he signed autographs and took a couple of pics. My friend and I sat a few rows behind him and the Elite guys and Denis were behind us. He was sitting next to his mom. Mikahel Youzny was also in the crowd. Obviously didn't want to bother Marat during the match. But he walked toward us after the match and I asked for a photo with him and he kindly obliged. Asked him about the wrist - he said it was doing ok. He saw my camera and said he had the same one (FYI, a Canon Ixus/Elph digital camera). Told him I hope he would playing soon and he said in 2 weeks. Needless to say, I was very surprised but pleased to see him. Definitely made my day!
I know you all want a fashion report so here goes - maroon adidas shirt with jeans, dark NY Yankees cap, sunglasses, and a black cast sort of thing on his left wrist (the same thing he wore before the hard cast). His hair looked a bit scruffy as it was poking out from under his cap - looks like he needs another hair cut!
Anyway, hope this news puts a smile on all your faces as I know it has been a while!
