COACHES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a list (in rough chronological order) of the various people who have coached Marat, both officially and unofficially. If any information is wrong please accept my apologies - I'm only human...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rausa Islanova
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marat's mum coached him until he was 14.
For more info go to family profile.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rafael Mensua
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marat's first professional coach, after he left Russia. Based in Valencia, it seems he also coached Marat's first girlfriend, Silvia, at the same club in Spain.
They finally parted company in 2000. It seems the relationship between Marat and Rafael was tempestuous at times, as Marat recalled 'sometimes I would say to him 'well, F*** you!' and he would say 'ok! F*** you too!' and we'd have to leave the courts'
But they seemed to have patched things up, as he reappeared at the Masters Series final tournament, along with Silvia, when Marat competed for the number 1 spot, and a place in history as the youngest ever to end the year in that position.

A British grass court coach, who also worked with Greg Rusedski.
Marat hooked up with him for a short stint in 2000.

A good friend of Marat's, he is one of the few people Marat considers as an 'official' coach of his. Their partnership was in 2000, and it was he, along with Chesnokov, who really helped Marat mentally.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mats Wilander

Introduced through a mutual friend in a bar. Both enjoyed working together, but due to Mats' commitments to the senior tour and his family,( Mats has a young son with a severe skin condition, and needs constant looking after) he couldn't travel with Marat enough, and so they parted ways after the Australian Open 2002.

Denis has been one of Marat's best friends for several years, but in a controversial move, Marat persuaded him to travel as his coach during 2003. However, it was possibly Marat's poorest year, with a wrist injury sidelining him for most of the season, and so-so results. Few people (fans, experts, players & commentators) thought it was a good partnership and there were sighs of relief when they split in summer 2004.

DOUBLES CAREER TITLES (3):

ATP profile
Lundgren, a Swede, is a former professional who had a reputation for partying as hard as he played during his career. During the seasons his young charge was perceived to have under-performed, some called for Federer to ditch his coach. Their relationship was said to be friendly, perhaps too laidback and amiable to spark the fires of a winning combination. Federer kept faith.
"Peter knows the game. He knows the tactics and the techniques from different players and can spot their weaknesses, so he can help me a lot, " he said of his coach. "He told me he did not want me to make the mistakes he made in his career. He's quite lucky. I'm very serious. I don't go to parties, I don't drink, I don't smoke. I'm very professional. "
Lundgren began working with Marat at Estoril (Portugal) in April 2004.

Alexander Volkov
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HISTORY: ex ATP tour player, constant assistant coach of Russian Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams, Executive Director of the Kremlin Cup
Alexander Volkov (RUS)
Birthdate: 3-Mar-67
Birthplace: Kaliningrad, Russia
Residence: Kaliningrad, Russia
Height: 6'2'' (187 cm)
Weight: 175 lbs (79 kg)
Plays: Left-handed
Turned Pro: 1988
SINGLES CAREER TITLES (3): 1991--Milan; 1993--Auckland; 1994--Moscow FINALIST (8): 1989--Milan; 1990--Rosmalen, Berlin; 1992--Wellington, Rotterdam, Johannesburg; 1994--Adelaide; 1997--Shanghai
DOUBLES FINALIST (3): 1991--Moscow; 1993--Auckland; 1996--Long Island
Volkov turned professional in 1988. His first noteworthy result came in 1990, when he stunned the tennis world by defeating Stefan Edberg (who was ranked the World No. 1 at the time) in straight sets in the first round of the US Open.
After finishing runner-up in three tourmaments over 1989 and 1990, Volkov won his first top-level professional singles title in 1991 at Milan. At Wimbledon that year, he famously lost a close five set match in the fourth round to the eventual tournament champion Michael Stich, 6–4 3–6 5–7 6–1 5–7, despite winning the same number of games as Stich overall in the match, which hinged on a lucky shot struck by the German when he was trailing 3-5 in the final set. As Volkov served for the match, with the score at 30-15 in his favour, a shot struck by Stich was heading out, but the ball hit the inside edge of the top of the net post, sailed over Volkov's head, and landed inside the line, sparing the German from having to face two successive match-points on Volkov's service game, and bringing the scoreline instead to 30-30. Stich went on to take the game; and subsequently Volkov would not win another.[1][2]
Volkov was runner-up in three tournaments in 1992, and won his second title in 1993 in Auckland. Later in 1993 Volkov defeated Björn Borg in the first round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, in a match which proved to be the last of Borg's career. Volkov won the Kremlin Cup a year later in 1994 to claim his third (and final) career title. (He reached one more final in 1997 in Shanghai.)
Volkov was part of the Russian team which reached the final of the Davis Cup in 1994. He won important singles rubbers over Patrick Rafter of Australia in the first round, and Michael Stich of Germany in the semi-finals. However he lost both his singles rubbers in the final as Russia were defeated 4–1 by Sweden.
Volkov retired from the professional tour in 1998. His career-high singles ranking was World No. 14 in 1994. His career prize-money earnings totalled US$3,362,786.
Personal friend of Marat, started helping him out a few months after Marat and Peter Lundgren parted ways. He mostly accompanied Marat during Masters Series events and Grand Slams. They terminated their joint work in July 2007.
US Open "It's the only guy that we can speak about he is one of my closest friends, off the courts also. He knows pretty much about my life. He also can he's a little bit older. He has a lot of experience in life. He understands. He's been a player. He's been a great player. Just more mental part so I can cry on his shoulder basically. He understands. He puts me together. He want me to win, which is great. He's there for me from the beginning till the end."
Kremlin Cup "I have a very tough year behind me, many disappointing losses, lack of confidence, problems with my knee...I needed a lot of time to recover after matches. Thanks to Sasha I found my way, I can play again."
