Marat Safin - Tennis player
He was such a nobody that each time the 20-year-old Moscow-born tennis player called the transportation desk at the U.S. Open to get a ride from his hotel to the stadium, he was asked to spell his name. On Sept. 10, however, Marat Safin made certain everyone knew exactly who he was: He won the U.S. Open by defeating defending champ and 13-time Grand Slam titleholder Pete Sampras in three straight sets. Overnight, Safin became "a star for the new millennium," SPORTS ILLUSTRATED declared. He also went from having to scrape by in Valencia, Spain (where he moved at age 14 to train), to living luxuriously in Monaco and driving a new Mercedes. "And now I can pay for tickets home - in first class!" says Safin, whose parents and younger sister still live in Moscow. He didn't win a medal for Russia at the Olympics, but his U.S. Open win earned him kudos from Boris Yeltsin and Russian President Vladimir Putin, both of whom sent telegrams. He was worthy of the praise, says NBC tennis commentator Bud Collins: "I've never seen a player of quality like Sampras get hog-tied like that. It was astounding." What's also astounding is that it almost didn't happen. At the start of the year Safin, who turned pro in '97, considered leaving tennis for good. "I didn't play so well, and I couldn't win one match," he says. "Then I decided to show people I'm not so bad." Now the No.2 player in the world, Safin is finding that the view near the top can be dizzying. "It's very difficult to be at this level," he says. "I have to work twice as hard."

02.10.2002 The Party For The Kremlin Cup Players
The traditional “Kremlin Cup Tennis Party” took place in the “Momo” restaurant on the 2nd of October. The jewelry store “Cosmos Zoloto”, an exclusive distributor of the Swiss watch-making company “Van Der Bauwede” in Russia, gave its special gift to “the most stylish” tennis player of the Kremlin Cup 2002.
The fashion magazine GQ and “Van Der Bauwede” which is the watch sponsor of the Kremlin Cup, chose the tennis star, Marat Safin as the winner of the special prize – the sports watch “Magnum GT1”. The watch is named after the racing cars of GT category with tachometer drawn on its dial, and its case is made of steel. Racers of Ferrari recognized “Magnum GT1” as the best watch due to the fact that the chronometer of GT1 has the ability to count the tenth shares of a second. The company “Van Der Bauwede” made the inscription “Kremlin Cup 2002” on the case of the “Magnum GT1” model, specially, for the tournament."
Sexiest male player
Ace magazine: 3rd sexiest man 2003
Safin's hot temper and racket-smashing have far fromput off his hoardes of female admirers. Once voted the worlds most beautiful man, the Russian exudes sex appeal with his sultry bedroom eyes, captivating smile and overwhelming self-confidence. "Everything's going to depend on me - every match, every point, every set," he says, "I'm not depending on anybody, any player. I depend on myself. If I play good, I mean, the other guy has no chance." And Safin, twice voted Most Populat Player on the ATP's website, has had his fair share of on court success, winning the US Open in 2000 and becoming - at the time - the youngest man to be ranked No.1 in the world.
World's Most Beautiful Man
SAFIN THE BEAUTIFUL
MARAT SAFIN may have missed out on Tennis Masters Cup qualification this year, but at least the mighty Russian can console himself with the fact that he is considered the world’s most beautiful man, at least for this month. Hot on the heels of Andy Roddick’s award in September, Safin received 3,715 votes from fans of the web-site www.mostbeautifulman.com to become ‘Mr November’. One of the voters, Sybil, wrote: “He has a great blend of athletic talent, good looks, and charisma. Whenever you see him play, you just can't take your eyes off him".

Sexiest Player
The SEXY-BOYS of the tour
We asked the 'tennis magazin' readers on our homepage (www.tennismagazin.de): Who is the player with the biggest amount of sex-appeal? Who is the Brad Pitt among the tennis pros? The echo was big as everyone has his own opinion to express about this subject. And you can always argue about different tastes because the beautiful blonde with the six-pack is not automatically the number one in the sex ranking. It's also about charm, aura and charisma.
First : Marat Safin
And the winner is...yes, Marat Safin. Actually nobody should be surprised. The Russian looks fantastic and has a body that makes teens drool. And not only they. Even Madonna, the Queen of Pop expressed her opinion. Marat Safin is in a top ten of men she could imagine as the father of her next child. Wow! Probably because the model-athlete from Moscow is also a real rebel, a kind of tennis-James Dean of the new millenium. One who is noticeable: he changes his coaches like underwear. He smashes rackets like Aerosmith-boss Steven Tyler guitars. And he appears on parties with a quantity of blonde-mices. Very sexy.
2. Andy Roddick
3. Juan-Carlos Ferrero
4. Tommy Haas
5. Gustavo Kuerten
6. Andre Agassi
7. Roger Federer
8. Lleyton Hewitt
9. Alex Corretja
10. Jan-Michael Gambill
