Hey I don't often post but reading all these pessimistic posts makes me literally see red! Right first point - no-one knows for sure that Marat is having a month's holiday - you are all presuming! He has been off since he lost on Tuesday 22nd June so more than enough time to have a break. Secondly - why should he play all the tournaments - that has been his problem - playing too much and then by the time he gets to the US Open - suffering burn out - then you would all be moaning again! So it makes perfect sense - build up slowly - it is a long summer with a lot of travelling and concentrate on the most important events - namely the two Masters Series, Olympics and the US Open. I am pretty sure he has sat down and had a discussion about all this with Peter and Walt and his management and they have decided on a plan of action. Somehow everyone seems to have forgotten - he has a place in Miami - lots of friends there and what better place to base yourself and practice on hard courts and I am sure there will be lots of very able players available to have long hard matches with. Then Sopot - strategy of course. Yes Sopot is the week before the Olympics. Cincy finishes on the 8th August - if he does well there there is no way he will fly straight off back 8 hours or so in time as well as a long flight, to play at Sopot but should he go out early from Cincy and maybe also out early from Toronto - maybe he would have a bit of extra match practice at Sopot seeing as it would not be so far to fly to Athens. It doesn't mean he is definite to be at Sopot but it is part of the main game plan. Then finish Olympics and off to the US Open. I can see no problems with this - together they are thinking and together as said by management the focus is on the US Open and a gentle build up. So stop being negative - if I was Marat reading these pages lately I would wonder if I had fans or a bunch of sad faces who expect him to be a robot and keep going out there and play play play. He is not that and never will be. Trust that he has shifted his focus and is getting himself ready. And if anyone believes that the early loss at Wimbledon didn't hurt - you don't know him very well. He has just moved on. So I trust that by putting things constructively , this will stop everyone having negative thoughts. Relax enjoy your summer hols and wait for Toronto - only 22 days away! PEACE & FAITH -TWO GREAT WORDS!

Damita , and I am not saying that he is, but if he had to take a month off because of an injury would you feel differently? Yep, injury is not the same! all the players who are seriously injured have to take a month off (or even more as we've seen last year with Marat himself)... my point is: who else, while not injured, takes a month vacation? And erm... usually i'm not a superstitious person but could we please not mention injury?!

hey Dendy! nice to see you. I'd like to answer on some things you said if you allow me to do so Right first point - no-one knows for sure that Marat is having a month's holiday - you are all presuming! True, but we all know that from the beginning. That's why the thread started: in order that we could discuss his possible vacation True again, but usually they (=the players in general) prefer to play one tournament, then to have a week off, and then to play a tournament, etc. or to have 2 weeks off and then play all the tournaments before the big ones Probably... if Peter is still with him (okay on that i admit i think they're still working together, and Ruth apparently hadn't any contrary info on this so... but still we're not 100% sure) again, we're not sure he'll go to Miami (here you're the one who's presuming ) I think he'll be easily convinced we're true fans by just looking at the enormous activity on this site and on this forum . We're worried about his palmares this year, and his ranking, etc. i'm pretty sure that's what fans of other players do you know. It's just easier for them coz the other players are not as colorful as Marat... Federer's fans for instance, they don't worry coz he's doing good since last year... but if suddenly everything goes wrong and other players like Marat, Roddick, Ferrero... win more tournaments than him, how do you think they'll react? and still they'll call themselves fans Soooooooo true. I talk for myself when i say: i'll make efforts to think positive, i'm sure he can achieve great things during the US hard court season!!! (as i have already said after his loss in wimbledon) Thanks! Enjoy your holidays too. I'll be counting the days with you!

Hi Damita Well one thing it got a few more positive responses. Believe me - Peter is still with him and let us see what develops. He could surprise us all - he did just that at the Oz Open.

I don't have a problem with Marat taking the time off and I agree with Dendy. Its been a long year so far and maybe he just need to rejuvenate, I mean everyone needs a holiday and he dosen't want to burn out during the hard court season, it is a bit tougher with the Olympics slap band in the middle of it! So, I suppoet Marat's decision to take a vacation or whatever it is he's going to be doing and patiently await Toronto!!!

well, if he's laying off the "minor" tournaments and focussing on the "majors", then he's finally learning something, not to burn himself out too early, which was a major problem he had the last few years. next thing would be to hopefully not have too much fun and forget that he's still got to train. so... to marat...have all the fun you want, get rejuvenated, rewire the brain a little, rewrite the game plan and remember to come back and kick ass! ;D

Hi Dendy, thanks for your post, Hey I don't often post but reading all these pessimistic posts makes me literally see red! Yep, totally agree, My sentiments exactly You have a point here, know something we don't ;D I was not convinced about Sopot, but again you seem to be in the know, how do you know this is part of the main game plan? Yep this is what Ruth said, and see no prob with this either. Again, my sentiments exactly I don't think any of us doubted that it did not hurt Yeah, you too, and as Damita said, I will be counting the days with you all

I dunno on one hand the schedule is tough with the TMS, the Olympics, the US Open so maybe he should not play too much before that... but on the other hand if he doesn't play he might be rusty -to steal Vassily's words- when he'll finally play and so will lose... really dunno what would be better I know I've already posted before lately. But need to say opinion. I agree with Vassily, Damita, and everyone else. I think that Marat should be playing tournaments (not vigurously), so that he can come back and be one of the best players at the ATP Tournaments. I think that Marat has had enough vacation what with his early exit at Wimbledon. And should be preparing so he is not rusty

Also thought you all might find this interesting
AP inaugural China Open tennis tournament in Beijing in September.
The men's draw includes Spain's Carlos Moya and Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marat Safin of Russia and Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand.
The tournament will be played on hard courts September 10-26 at the Beijing Tennis Center, which is still being built.
He did say last year when he did the tour with Paradon he would return this September, so hopefully he will ;D

Did anyone notice that Marat is probably going to be out of the top-8 in the Indesit race soon? He has 283 points and is No8 and Nalbandian, after him , has 252 points. Not playing for a month he risks not qualifying for the Masters Cup and if that happens that will be simply a foolish situation. Anyway, Nalbandian is almost certain to match Marat's points by the time Marat plays on 2nd of August and then if Marat plays not on a top-10 level he'll be brushed aside. He wouldn't afford losing in the first round of a tournament till the end of the year in that situation.

Ahhh Vass.
Luckily for us, he's not. David N. has barely played any tournaments citing injury, and Andre Agassi behind David isn't playing the Olympics. Coria and Gaudio have both pulled out with injuries, and Timmy was knocked out yesterday. Therefore the only active players left are Roger, Roddick, Hewitt, and Moya. The only way Marat can go is up.
As long as he doesn't lose the second round.
