Sydney, Kooyong are courting Safin
Margie McDonald October 07, 2005
A TUG-OF-WAR is developing between Sydney and Melbourne for one of the titans of the men's game - Australian Open champion Marat Safin.
The Kooyong classic and the Sydney International are chasing the Russian, who has always been popular with Australian crowds and beat Lleyton Hewitt to win his second Grand Slam in January.
"It is a hope and we have been talking to his management since before the French Open," Kooyong tournament director Colin Stubs said.
But like Sydney tournament director Craig Watson, Stubs knows Safin is a hard fish to land. Two weeks before this year's Kooyong classic Safin said he was coming, only to withdraw just days before the event.
At Wednesday's launch of the Sydney event, Watson also said he was eagerly seeking Safin to return. In his only Sydney appearance, the Russian reached the quarter-finals in 2003 before a wrist injury forced him to forfeit to eventual champion Hyung-Taik Lee of Korea.

i really hope he goes to kooyong as i am going to be there! i have prime seats and i really want to see him as i can't go to the open anymore... i have a membership to kooyong and i pay the exuberant fees all year so i can get a good seat (and use their awesome gym and drink the lemon lime and bitters at the bar-the best lemon lime and bitters in the world and i am a bit of a frek when it comes to lemon lime and bitters trust me!!) i will be devo if he doesn't show...i will go and enjoy meself but i really hopes he goes to kooyong. after all it is in melbourne and on rebound ace AND you are against generally better competition as they only allow players of a certain rank in. makes sense to go to kooyong, right??!!! i'll talk to stubbsie and see if i can get any inside info!

I think too its really wonderful that Marat is so interested in his roots. Actually its one of the traits that I really like in him, of course there are many others. And The Sydney vs Kooyong erhm.... I guess if he plays either it will be whoever comes up with the big bucks

I didn´t know where to post it, or if it´s been posted before, but I read that Marat holds a record: He hit the most aces (31) without making a double fault. It was in the match against Agassi at AO 2004. So who says, that Marat is not consistent?

Safin out of St Petersburg Open, doubtful for Paris 2005-10-16 20:07:07 GMT (Reuters)
MOSCOW, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Australian Open champion Marat Safin has pulled out of this month's St Petersburg Open and is doubtful for the Paris Masters.
The world number four said on his official website on Sunday he has yet to fully recover from a ligament tear in his left knee that has troubled him since Wimbledon and forced him to withdraw from the U.S. Open.
"The knee is not yet ready," Safin said, adding he would fly to Paris on Monday to resume training, hoping to be fit in time to defend the title he won in Bercy last year.
The St Petersburg Open, where Safin was top seed, begins on October 24 and the Paris Masters the following week.
The Russian, who pulled out of this week's Kremlin Cup, wants to play in Paris and the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Just e-mailed Kooyong about whether Marat will play, got this reply
It is still unknown if Marat will play in 2006. He is yet to make a decision. Regards, David
