One day after winning the “Millennium Challenge” exhibition against six-time ATP World Tour Champion Pete Sampras, former World No. 1 Marat Safin took the court Tuesday evening for his first-round match against last week’s Indianapolis champion Robby Ginepri and rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
“If you beat Pete Sampras the day before you know you have a good chance of beating Robby Ginepri,” said Safin with a laugh following the match. “Robby is playing really well, coming from a title last week. He is a tough player. It was a well played match from both of us. I was able to go up a break in the beginning of the second set and that helped me to turn the match around.”
The 29-year-old Safin, who has announced he will be playing retiring at the end of the year, will attempt to reach his first quarter-final of the 2009 season when he next faces Latvian Ernests Gulbis, a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Yen-Hsun Lu. Safin, a two-time Los Angeles quarter-finalist, said about the 20 year old: “Gulbis is a young ambitious player. He has a very good serve and plays well from the back. I will need to play my game to beat him.”

But he fought and he fought hard. Well done Marat!!! Thataboy, that's more like it . I promise not to refer again to your 'current lazy-arsed approach to your tennis' ... you have taken heed and that's now out of the window. Ain't it sunshine? LOL. Re Gulbis, he likes coming in to the net - even though he ain't that good at it (that's your speciality shot these days) ... and his mind wanders ... (NOT YOUR SPECIALITY ... as you are a regenerated pixie!) He may choose different tactics on this surface, but be prepared to take the ball early and keep making him play one more shot. He's likely to take risks ... On another note, glad to see the hair growing back. FG PS Cue for a head shave ... PPS Absolutely delighted with the Sampras' win. Nice guy, but I hate his tennis style.

Have just come back from a wine tasting. Hic. In appreciation of my boy's newfound belief in his game, I raised a little pinot gristo to my lips. Followed by a little pinot noir. And a shiraz viognier. Hic. Ashnd hic a Moscato hic 2009. Blesshd im. It wash loverly. Hic. Check out the site - www.innocentbystander.com.auAnd can I say, before a drop passed my lips, the sales director from the winery conducting the tasting, Ross Lukje, was an Aussie Richard Gasquet. I will say again, a drop had not passed my lips at this point. ;D He'd become Agassi by the end of it though. Kiddin'. Davis, if you can't get your mitts on Rickie Babe, try Ross! ;)Innocent Bystander is based in the Yarra Valley, Australia. If Melbourne is ever on my travel plans, I'd fit this tour in as well. They have a nice line in bread and cheese on the estate as well. Hey Big Yin, there's something life-enhancing for you. Skip Miami and try out the vineyard experience ... hic. Just remembered, work tomorrow ... Nite nite. And good luck Big Yin. We will be thinking of you. F hic G ... where's my wings? Hic.
