From the tournament's official website Safin invited 08:20 Marat Safin will make Marseille one of the stops of his farewell season. The Russian has been allocated one of the three tournament wild cards. For his fourth and last participation, the two time Grand Slam champion will surely want to better his best result at "l'Open 13" : a second round in 2004.

There have been some withdrawals too, to the annoyance of the organiser. Murray, Cillic, Melzer, Ancic and Hanescu
The Draw has been made and Marat will play Arnaud Clement in the first round! Without looking to far ahead apossible QF match with Novak Djokovic. DRAW POSTED IN FIRST POST OF THREAD!
Clement is ranked 81 at the moment and i think Marat should be able to overcome this hurdle although the frenchman is playing at home.
Marat and Clement are 1-1 in H2H 2006 Washington DC, U.S.A. Hard S Clement 7-6(5) 7-6(4)
2001 Wimbledon England Grass R16 Safin 6-0 6-3 6-2
No Doubles for Marat this week!
Some nice French matches too - must help in deciding French DC team!

Ok my Big Pixie, I've been laid up since Wednesday with a chest infection and need some serious cheering up. Let me see that consistency of focus and good solid groundstrokes you've been showing of late on display here.
Showing off at the net is always appreciated, I might add. ;D
FG
PS Stay out of the nightclubs this week. Stick with the knitting.

Marseille also has its own livestream: You have to download the program first: www.open13.fr/web-tv.html Ok my Big Pixie, wing-sprouting action anticipated from your fairy godmother today. Focus, move the feet, bend the knees more at the net, no racquet smashing, no mumping and shoulder slumping (I will allow you only one grump in Russian for the whole match and that's it). Good solid play, with some nice volleying thrown in for me. If it ends up in tiebreaks, don't do anything daft ... as if. Keep the ball in play. Will be watching from my sick-bed ... so don't set my health back a week! I'm relying on you to show that my coaching is paying off. ;D In all modesty. ;D Go for it Big Yin. FG

Damn it. 4-6 6-3 6-2 to Clement. Shouldn't have let him get that opening game of the second set so easily, Big Yin. His confidence level jumped ... and your shoulders started slumping. I thought I had banned that? Don't do it in Dubai. Good first set though. ;D FG

I pulled the quilt over my head for the third set. Think my Big Pixie did too ... At least he's got another tournament coming up soon, so he can start getting out on the practice court a bit more and get a few more matches under his belt. He'd better get me my wings this year ... FG

I think Marat has given us a taster of what were in for next couple of weeks - this is generally the worst part of his year for some reason all the way to DC time.
Tough Luck Marat and try and play better in Dubai!

So sad to see him out in a first round. No points! He really seemed to give up after the break in the second. I hope he isn't regretting his decision to continue this year.
