It's a shame that so many players withdrew - Ancic, Murray, and Gonzalez would've spiced the whole thing up Ah well, one would hope a weak field will make it easier for Marat to defend his points... Good luck!!

Monday Preview

The 2007 Legg Mason Tennis Classic presented by GEICO features a main draw with a total of 48 singles players and 16 doubles teams vying for a coveted ATP Tour title and US Open Series Lever 2000 Challenge points.

First round action on USTA Member Appreciation Day kicks-off on the Stadium Court with the continuation of our first main draw singles match, which began Sunday afternoon, but was halted by much-needed (if not necessarily appreciated) rain ¨C 18-year-old Colombian Santiago Giraldo will be serving at 5-6 in the first set against 2002 Australian Open Champion, Thomas Johansson from Sweden. Another 18-year-old (as of July 11), wild card Martin Klizan (Slovakia), will face the first Greek player to compete at the WilliamH.G.FitzGeraldTennisCenter, Konstantinos Economidis. In fact, all four players are making their Washington debut, as are a total of 15 players in this year¡¯s singles draw.

Three of four qualifiers have been determined ¨C with Wesley Whitehouse (South Africa), George Bastl (Switzerland) and Wayne Odesnik advancing on Sunday. Andre Sa and NCAA men¡¯s singles champion (UVA) Somdev Dev Varman never had the opportunity to take court, but will fight for the final spot at 4 p.m. on the Grandstand.


The 2007 Doubles Draw features what is undoubtedly one of the strongest fields in tournament history, including top seeds and two-time defending Legg Mason Tennis Classic Champions, Bob and Mike Bryan, who just captured their 40th career title at Los Angeles a week ago. All four seeded teams are in the Top 10 in the world.

Today¡¯s doubles action features players with a combined 90 titles! Well, it helps that Mahesh Bhupathi has 39 career doubles titles ¨C including 1999 Wimbledon, 1999 and 2001 French Open, and 2002 US Open ¨C but even the unseeded teams bring a wealth of talent to the court. This year alone, Eric Butorac and Jamie Murray have teamed for three titles (and Murray teamed with Jelena Jankovic to win Mixed Doubles at Wimbledon). The Israeli duo of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram have 10 doubles crowns, while Jordan Kerr and Jim Thomas have six apiece. If one follows the ATP, one knows the Doubles Revolution is on ¨C and the field at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic offers prime viewing.
